I know that you want a single pigment, but I love Daniel Smith Undersea Green, yes it is a blend of French Ultramarine and Quinacridone Gold, but I feel it deserves a mention, you can use it in almost every area that greens are used. Many would say just mix it your self but I value consistency and I have a great starting mix that I could change if I want to.

I don't know if I have properly expressed this before but I really adore your channel. Your informative videos are set up in a logical and comprehensive way and are so very useful to anyone with an interest in watercolors. Your recordings are crisp and steady and always at a good angle. Your voice is pleasant to listen to and easy to understand and your paintings are an absolute delight to watch. Thank you very much for all your hard work. :)

I´ve used White Nights ”Green” for over 40 years and its my absolute favourite green (PG8). I don’t understand why people say it’s not lightfast. I have two watercolour paintings that has been on the wall for more than 35 years and I can’t see any changes. Even in the parts where its pure PG8 and no mixes.

Interesting. I love the color and the mixes, and I just checked my Rosa Gallery sets. They all have "Green" P.G. 8 pans. The price of the 24 set in a cardboard box dropped to $13 recently, so I bought a couple for me and a couple for gifts... I also picked up a couple of the modern sets of 21 because some extra colors and the beautiful tin has an extra empty row for additional pans. They were $23. It was a bit of a splurge... but I'm not sorry, and now I feel Vindicated 😌 ❤

I can't pick just one between green apatite gen and undersea green. It's just impossible. I can also never leave out perylene green no matter what. And then pthalo green YS is my go-to bright green. So I end up having 4 greens in an 18-color palette. Paring it down to 12 is too stressful that I don't even think about it haha

I so appreciate the detail you give us in your Top 5 videos. I learn so much from you! I was intrigued by the three green primatek paints, so I ordered the "Mineral Marvels" dot card set, which allowed me to sample every Primatek color Daniel Smith offers. It was the perfect thing to assuage my curiosity, only now I do really need to buy a tube of Green Apatite Genuine, not as much for its color in particular (although I do love the color), but for the way it dances across the paper when I paint wet-on-wet. It's one of those colors that "paints itself" once you let it onto the page.

I always learn something from these vids - usually I learn I need to buy something. :^) One green Primatek that _will_ mix is Diopside. My first green, I got it cuz I was balking at the out-of-the-tube hue of PG7, and found Diop. a little more 'paletteable', pun intended. But now I've gotta have me some perylene...

Hey I found a lightfast replacement for the White Nights 'green'. I actually like it better. It is 4 part mix. Phalo green M. Graham, + cad yellow M.Graham, Mayan blue genuine Daniel Smith ( not the darker Mayan blue) and a little M.Graham's hooker green. It is gorgeous! Give it a try. I wish I could send you a picture of my swatches. I have the White Nights version side by side and I really prefer the tedious 4 part mix. Thank you! And mayan blue Really gives it a moood! Beautiful. And yes it is a primatek color.

Lovely lovely review (episode?). I always find surprising though how uncommon Phtalo Green YS (PG36) is. Every one automatically goes for PG7 and discusses how useful it is for mixing, but then talks about how they prefer warmer greens. If you check out different brands color charts you'll see that many of the convenience mixes they offer that everyone loves are actually made with PG36. It makes the most stunning green golds, and I definitely like the Sap Greens made with PG36 better. Warmer, more vibrant and lively. Maybe give it try with the paint from Daniel Smith's dot chart (if there's any left Haha!), and tell me what you think. I often look at brands brochures to see which pigments they use most often in their convenience mixed and find new extremely useful colors for mixing that way. That how I added PY150, PG36 and PBr25 to my palette (I was so happy to see you've discovered PBr25 as well. Isn't it useful??) I'm considering experimenting with the raw umber version of PBr7 as well. I found it in many mixes I liked, mainly earthy reds and purples, greens, and dulled down moody blues. I also like Daniel Smith's PG23 hue, which is a very grey green, but didn't add it to my palatte in the end, as I don't like the texture of the granulation it makes. Would love to find another version of it with Similar hue, but not many brands carry it unfortunately, So I use watered down Perylene Green instead, but try to avoid doing that when I can due to it's staining properties. Schmincke's Cobalt dark green (PG26) is stunning as well, at least on it's own, and it has a gorgeous granulation pattern. I Don't know how it fairs in mixes, as I only made a swatch using the paint from their dot chart. I decided not to get it as it's a little on the opaque side, and the granulation, though stunning, is not very suitable for my uses. Trying to be economically smart here! Sheesh, that was long. If you're still here - kudos to you!

Thanks for your contributions to the discussion! I know PG36 is a very common color in convenience greens, but I've never like the hue on its own, so I never ended up picking up a tube. I do have a generous dot from mission gold I've been meaning to play with but I just haven't gotten around to it. PG7 does make my very favorite version of sap green with quin gold, and I LOVE the dark moody cool colors it makes, so that's why it's on my list :)

Serpentine and Green Apatite are useful for landscapes and botanicals where you want a green that isn't flat. I did a quick urban sketch in Rome with lots of trees and I just just straight Green Apatite for the leaves and I got a green with lots of different tonal qualities so it looked more lively. They have their uses.

Love this video, Denise...in my research of greens to add to a first palette, it's putting some pieces together for me and just exploding my understanding of the potential of mixing, so grateful. In this research journey, I found a green that looks very much like your beloved DS Sap Green - it's Roman Szmal Hooker's Green. A few days ago, I took a screen shot of a swatch of RS Hooker's Green and blew it up. While watching your video, I put it side-by-side with DS Sap Green, and it seems amazingly close. The screen shot came from a review of "favorite Roman Szmal" colors on another channel. I may be ordering the RS color, and will bookmark your video to come back to if I end up getting it. Who knows if the color comparison will hold up when done in this way--but it sure has me curious!

Interesting tidbit about the primatek colors not mixing well~ On another wonderful watercolor channel, I’ve seen them mixed and they don’t look muddy (to me anyway) 🤔 I wonder why there are different results in mixing? Do the pigments used change by batch, perhaps? I ordered a few of those greens and so when they come in I’m going to experiment as well. I do hope that they mix alright but if not they are still beautiful colors on their own, as you pointed out, so I’m glad to have them either way ☺️

I agree for the most part on the Primateks, though I think they're a bit more versatile than you give them credit for. My favorite mixes with green apatite are when you add a small amount to vermilion or M. Graham's Indian yellow. I've also separated the bright green from the granulating particles and painted with that to good effect. The particles react strongly to a magnet, which eases the process quite a bit. I'm glad you mentioned green gold, and there I 100% agree. I'm currently using it as my cool yellow, replacing lemon yellow, and I love it. The mixes might not have as high of a value, but I'll actually paint with straight green gold. I can't remember a painting of mine where I've used straight lemon yellow. I do use the Winsor & Newton version, which is very much a gold first, green second, but I feel my point would stand even if I had the slightly greener versions from other brands.

Thanks so much for you additions to the discussion. As always, I am always affected by my own painting style and medium. I LOVE the primatek colors for adding textures to backgrounds, but I paint 95% animal portraits and in those cases, they're pretty useless for mixing as I mentioned ;) I definitely wanted to nod to PY129 because it's so popular, but I just didn't find a place for it here. I got rid of PY3 a while ago but happily keep DS's lemon yellow with PY175. I do find it much more useful :)

The reason the "mineral pigments" don't mix with other paints is because they're multi-pigment paints where we don't know the mix. If you grind up rocks, you typically don't get any tinting strength at all, so DS secretly augments those paints with pigment mixes (see World Watercolor Month for evidence of this). Jadeite Genuine is Phthalo Blue (GS) with Raw Amber and probably a little of a teal for that underlying bluish color. And knowing that, you can easily mix Jadeite.

I wrestle with myself on the white nights PG8 because it is absolutely my favourite green and it haunts me that it might feed if I use it in anything that’s really not a sketchbook painting. There is nothing like it although I do use jadeite as often as possible in replacement of it, but still the way it really wet and dances across the page is so much fun to paint with. I just don’t even care.

Hi Denise, I’m looooooving this series!!!! I am shocked that you haven’t mentioned Viridian - even as an honourable mention - as it is such a versatile green, the diverse, greens that can be obtained are quite amazing especially for their clarity and even though on its own Viridian looks very unnatural, when mixed with other single pigment colours it makes the MOST natural clear/clean looking greens...

PG8 is my favorite green and I am still searching for a good alternative since PG8 is absolutely not lightfast (kimberly crick & handprint ) and it seems it is also not completely stable (handprint says that). If anyone knows a good lightfast replacement/ convenience mixture that is equally dark in mass tone this would be really helpful. Schmincke’s green olive is also made from PG8.

all (except PG7, in my top 5 would be replaced with PG50) pigments are mine beloved greens too! PY129 got from sennelier, winsor&newton and van gogh, all are nice bright and clearly on a green side of the spectrum. I am desperate of PO49 death, but DS quinacridone gold mix of PY150+PO48 is best available quina gold replacement so far anyway, shinning bright and clear, great for mixing.

Very nice overview, thanks :) as far as the quin gold goes, try mix of py150 and pr101 (transp red iron oxide) together. Especially the py150 has that "luminosity" in undertone that might be what you are looking for for mixing the sap green you long for. As for pg8 from white nights, it's spot on :D have it, would love it, but due to lightfastness I'm intending to use it only for monochrome value doodles in the sketchbook. It can be mixed with pb27 (prussian blue) and Py 150. Those two are epic for mixing greens that aren't screaming, but have luminous, glowing undertone!

In Liquid Color I hope you will enjoy it ^.^ it goes from truly almost black to awesome yellowish(er) green, having insane value scale (sun) I'm running on white nights myself as they are most affordable in middle Europe locally, but slowly switching to DS as I rip through them (blush) sadly DS is super expensive here, but who cares; it's not like I'm going to fly through those that fast, the 15ml tubes are huuuuuge! (or I hope so XD) If you would be having issues getting your hands on the White nights, let me know. Maybe we can figure something out ^.^

I have the Sonnet Green Deep made with PG8, and it comes up as a more rich and vibrant Perylene Green (comparing to Daniel Smith's version of Perylene Green). So I'm not sure if the White Nights has a difference to it. I haven't had it for very long, so I have yet to do a lot of mixing with it. But I think I am going to enjoy using it, as it looks really great out of the pan.

If this was hard for the greens, I can't imagine on the earth tones! I guessed your top 3! But in a differente order, having the phthalo green 3rd and the perlyne green 2nd! My favorite green is Mission gold's olive green such a lovely convinience mixture. Try mixing phthalo green with PBr25, the result is a lovely really deep dark green almost like perlyne green but with that glow of the phthalo green!

    @palmirafarkash1492

The lighfastness thing is very odd actually. They rate it at 2/3 which they call 'normal lighfastness', but they have PG7 and PV19 pigments rated 2/3 as well, and these are known to be very lighfast pigments, so - very odd. I would definitely do my own lightfastness test if I needed to use it in artwork that needs to be very archival. Shin Han have 2 single pigment versions of PG8 by the way. Sap Green and Hookers Green. The Sap Green is the warmer more vibrant version (according to their color chart). That is the one I have in my collection, and I adore it :) I got it at my local art store, but Jackson's offers it at a decent price as well. Just be Careful to look at the PWC range. They have other ranges that are not professional artist grade, and they made it pretty confusing :)

Though some of the colors could use a little more pigment (the cobalt blue comes to mind) the green works beautifully for me, especially for pine trees which I enjoy painting.
