Yessssssssss PR254 is pure magic. I love using this color with deep indigo, they just make each other pop!

May I ask which brand you use? 🙂

@@hannahthufvesson I switch brands all the time, but I find M Graham and Qor are the ones I think of the most 😁

If you have a Pyrrolr red you need a Cadmium red too, to have not only that synthetic look and a more opaque one ( you need in reds , blues and yellows always one opaque too. An aquarelle needs for imagination of depth some opaque ones. All great painters did and do it this way .
I started out using Perylene red from DS, because it looked like the truest primary red I could find. I recently changed my mind after swatching out my DS 200 color dot card, and got the pyrrol red from DS. Looking forward to seeing how it works out singly and in mixes. Never been interested in the cad colors - so opaque (and toxic).
I absolutely fell in love with Winsor Red as a newbie to watercolor! Didn't know anything about PR254 and pigments resulting in duplicity of purchases!!! However, I have noticed not all pigments (magenta) appear the same just because they have the same number!!! Fascinating! Then I found you!!! Wow!!! I love your channel! I did hear that the auto industry uses pigments... and that PR254 was named Ferrari Red!!! Thank you Dr. for such great lessons! Also found your website to all the watercolor paints info and left a gift... a California Gramma ❤
I have Schmincke and am happy with it!
I love this red. I also love the way it tints out. It has a really nice look in tints that is perfect for portraits, figure work, etc. Also pairs great with Pthalo Green for darks.
Thanks Oto. Pyrrol red is my neutral red on my pallet. I have M Graham on my mixed brand daily working pallet. Then 2 Quin rose and a Quin red.😆
Eeeeeeeek!!! I’ve been looking forward to you doing pr254!!
Thanks for another very informative video! I use M. Graham Pyrrol Red now, but when I run out I will order Holbein's, I always go for as much transparency as possible. Seems I'm moving more and more to Holbein!
I Have several brands of Pyrrol Red & my DS is the darkest, most opaque and less saturated in tints. My DS is VERY OPAQUE. I prefer Winsor & Newton Winsor Red for the depth and clarity of color, and because it is less opaque than some of the other brands and is uniquely inert wet in wet. My other fav is Schmincke for its slightly warmer than Winser Red and I like that and also very inert wet into wet also.
Funny, I started with Mijello first, and all the other brands look wrong to me! It’s a terrific color though, in any brand. The lighting And sound are very good in the video btw.
I got the winsor newton pyrrole red on sale once, I usually avoid warm reds but I learned to love it.
Perfect episode for me today. This is one of those colours I am never sure about! It is in none of my 'stable' palettes, but I actually do enjoy mixing with it when I bring it out.
Was waiting for this one, thank you!! 😊
Splendid video & audio quality, Oto! 🌈
You definitely helped me by pointing out how Mission Gold colour looks in comparison. I would rather get Sennelier regardless of a bit extra opacity.
You never go too far wrong by picking up the M. Graham version of these colors.
Da Vinci has been surprising me in these past comparisons, so I'm really curious how this one will mix with that low stain and low opacity. Very excited for part 2, and thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos ♡♡♡
Maybe it is just how reds appear on camera, but these seem more similar to one another that most of the other colors in the showdown series. I have been intrigued by the Qor line, but honestly, over the course of this series, they just don’t perform well enough to justify the price. So, thank you for sharing your expertise and saving me money.😎 Also, the audio was brilliant!
Great video and the sound is great
I love this series. So informative.
LOL, so cool you hit the pyrrol reds after (recently, last time or 2x ago) alizarin! I'm really glad you were able to pull 254s because they're everywhere and named everything. (Poor PR 264s have a similar issue, it seems! Schminke's is the awesome "Ruby Red Deep" and that color name would never make it into ANY showdown 😂 -strangely, it's the M. Graham "perm. alizarin crimson" 😂😂😂😂) Anyway, in my "quest", I ended up with Winsor Red and the DS; they're fine (I think I have the Sennelier one, too). Tinting strength is INSANE, like indanthrene/throne 😨 but (for ME) with a good phthalo turq (Schminke's or Sennelier's either) pyrrol red makes a scary vibrant black! I don't think I'd have a use for such a strong red unless I start urban painting, but I'd tip my hat to W&N's Winsor Red for at least being somewhat _less_ staining. (Since I mix it mostly, that shouldn't matter - phthalos are always going to act permanent-staining I think!) QoR's is a rip off imo (no hate, anyone! ❤️😂 I like many QoRs!!!) but W&N and Sennelier both did good choosing this pigment for their "signature red".
The video is fine I guess. I only have a half pan of Scarlet Red and a tube of Permanent Red Deep. But... I'm really disappointed with the Mission Gold I expected it to be just as a bright red similar to Schmincke's Scarlet Red. I'm still using it up since I have it on my main palette. The next one will be maybe Winsor Red as a replacement.
So pretty! They are all very nice!
oooh the holbein one is really pretty!! i may have to invest in a tube from jackson's, or else wait for artemiranda to ship to the united kingdom again so i can get it a bit cheaper :o
early in my painting career, i learned to use pyrrol red to replace cadmium red (i dislike heavily opaque colors). I've used both Windsor & Newton's Windsor red and Maimeriblu's sandal red, both beautiful colors. Most of my Maimeriblu collection is their older line, is it possible the newer formulation is causing the bubble issues you have had?
I am at the beginning of my watercolour journey, and read and watch as much as I can:)! At the moment I am reading Ron Ranson”s book on watercolours. He mentioned light red as a colour he uses in his palette, is it the pyrrole red he used?
