Hi ! Is it possible to replicate Holbein colors only with their primary colors ? Because the colors pigments are really specific so I don’t know if it is possible .

Hi Oto! Do you know if I can use regular watercolor paper to print my art works at home? Or do I have to get the ones specifically called "fine art"?

My fav is a toughy, I love cadmium yellows from years of oil painting, so that's #1, but Hansa deep is a VERY close 2nd. Then the Hansa Lt, & Azo have equal billing for choice #3... Basically 4 out of five I would buy if I could.

Thank you for such an in-depth comparison. Since they are so similar in every way, I'll stick to the one I was first introduced to and became the most familiar with. Your explanation made so much sense. 😊

I cant believe people cheat and print out the paper with the outline before painting. I draw the thing and then paint on the thing.

right now i don't have this colour. i have sodalite, jadeite, and the two turquoises from the Primatek line. but i want this colour because it's a light, cool earth. there aren't very many light, cool earths. i personally love the colour.

I love using rubber band brushes to paint foliage. Not my original idea. I saw it on KZread but can't remember the title or artist. Just cut the rubber bands, bundle them together and bind them at one end. Such fun.

I bought a masking fluid pen Molotow brand on line. I covered the area that I wanted to preserve. After working on my painting and happy with the results, to my horror the blue of the masking fluid would not come off. I did use the eraser you recomend. Sadly for me I had to discard the painting.

I have a Mission Gold Green Gold single pigment py150 and it’s a very transparent vibrant golden yellow. ( Hence, for a greenish version, I plan to pick up W&N PY129 to supplement my collection). Now I have learnt to research straight up pigment number rather than by name… then I get to see which brands truly have the single pigment hues I need. Thanks to folks like you who spend hours doing these comparisons, I learned very quickly, even as a beginner in watercolor ( but total pigment and color theory nerd)

Very interesting to see all the side by side information. I have a Sennelier Payne's Grey and would have replaced it with Daniel Smith as DS is a good price in my area. The low tinting strength of the DS concerns me a bit so I'm leaning toward the WN as a cooler grey that also doesn't have the low tinting strength and rewetting issues. So great to make choices armed with so much knowledge. Many thanks!

Thanks for the video! This helps solve part of what I want to do: print in graphite on watercolor paper! My thought is what if you want to come up with your sketch digitally? You could do that and still have a graphite sketch on the paper. Or you could come up with a sketch idea and scan it so if you want to try various versions you don't have to redraw it! Now I know there are graphite cartridges for printers, I just don't know if they have them for ink jet printers

Winsor and Newton sugest a split primary palette of ... Winsor lemon Winsor Yellow Scarlet Lake Permanent Rose Winsor Blue Green Shade French Ultra Marine. However, to my eyes, the two yellows are next to each other in their chromatography range - too similar. I swap winsor yellow for winsor yellow deep.

I believe there is a little bit of questionability that has been raised recently around the lightfastness of PY3, and PY175 is confidently light-fast, so that is one advantage. On her blog, Kim Crick explained some of the issues QOR found with PY3 light-fast testing, and that PY175 is the best light-fast alternative

Quin rose is still the ONLY Daniel Smith colour I own, and every time i use it, I think of you. Honestly, most of what I know about my pigments is all thanks to you! Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. I don't think I would paint the same if I never found your videos!

Fun fact: Holbein's 5ml tube sets are really economical in India, a country with crazy import and customs duty. A 24 tube set costs $60/- where a Daniel Smith set would cost around $150+ Because of this price difference, I initially thought that Holbein is a student quality paint. Only later that I learnt that it's actually pricier than DS in US and some people still prefer it...

Awesome! When I went to an IKEA a few years ago one of their showroom wardrobes had a light that came on only when you opened the door, like a refrigerator 🤯 I don't think it was the cheapest light but since you're saving so much on the cabinet.... 😊

I have also experienced the issue of white speckles appearing when using darker paints on Arches paper. However, the Arches paper is widely regarded as the best by many people, so it was easy to assume the problem with the paints itself rather than the paper. Baohong paper is very good for testing colors, but the most accurate way would be to test the colors on the actual paper people will be using. Additionally, Dr Oto has a significant influence on paint evaluations. Due to a previous video review for Gold Mission paints, many people now have a misguided prejudice against Gold Mission. It would be good to officially correct this.

After wetting and drying the whole paper, you'll notice that its length and width has changed by a millimeter. That's the reason why the paper buckles.

This video is amazing! Thank you so much! I’m a huge fan of the drawing gum because it’s latex-free, unlike the majority of masking fluid. I’m allergic to latex, so have avoided masking fluid for years despite loving the effects it has on watercolor. Since finding the drawing gum, I’ve been going nuts with it! No more worrying about a painting killing me!

I have a couple DaVinci 37ml tubes of Manganese Blue dried in the tubes. Do you know what would be the best way to reconstitute them? I do have some ox gall and gum Arabic on hand, but I'd like to get it right on the first try. The paint rattles around inside the tube like a maraca. Any advice would help so I don't ruin what little I have.
