I am a woodturner and owner of Woodturning Tool Store.
This channel is dedicated to showing woodturning tip, techniques and projects and will also talk about tooling needed for woodturning. My live streams are fun and interactive so join in the chat - usually Fridays at 2:30 pm Central US time.

Well made tool. I have one.
I was all set to watch this live. Then a neighbor called and invited me for a rib diner. No contest. So here I am watching the replay. 🙂🙂
I missed this live but learned heaps thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video ….. lots of info! I really like the “Bandsaw Companion” very helpful in set up. #SSST
Thanks for watching!

Harvey, thanks for watching. This was a live event from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM Central. You had to be there during the live event to enter the drawing. Maybe next time...

Good show, informative.
The very last clip laying the chuck part on the dove tail was best visual explanation!!
Just what i was looking for..new turner. Just refreshing what i was taught in class 5 min ..move on.
Is it available? Price? Thanks 🙏
I got tied up in the shop yesterday and missed the beginning of the demo. So here I am Saturday morning seeing what I missed. A few weeks ago I turned what I believe is Live Oak and it looks a lot like the Bur Oak you are turning. Same wood by another name perhaps? Sorry your weather wasn't the best for the eclipse. But at least you were there. I was stuck here in Florida. See you again in two weeks, or maybe next week with Cindy. Take care. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Great demo Todd. Love the oak. I have a few chucks myself.
Nice job Tod..!
I could not watch live but thanks for the replay.🙂🙂
Thank you for sharing. Wish I could have been there.🙂🙂
Pretty freaking cool despite the clouds
Fred Langley Hello from Savannah
Great demo. I now know what I’m doing wrong with not only my hook tool but also my Oneway Termite tool.
Glad it helped.
Good day Sir Tod. As your busy schedule permits, would you please share the approximate angle that you set your platform to, so I can use this as a starting place for the occasional sharpening of the outside of the tool I acquired from you a few years ago. Thanks in advance for your time, BC
Thanks for watching and the comment. Measuring the bevel angle of the Hook Tool it is about 60 degrees. Essentially I move the platform to accommodate the angle needed. Here is a link to a short video where I show the sharpening of the hook tool. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iH2AusyYXbXKm7A.html
Is shear scraping ever combined with the negative rake or the double bevel or is that only on the inside of the bowl type scrapers?
Thanks for the comments. You can shear scrape with a single bevel tool of a double bevel tool. My definition of shear in relation to woodturning is presenting the cutting edge at angle less than 90 degrees to the traveling vector of the wood surface at the cutting edge. So if you hold a single bevel scraper flat on the tool rest with the handle perpendicular to the wood and present it to the rotating wood it is laying a 90 degree to the traveling vector of the spinning wood there is no shear. However, if you then tilt the tool up on one edge so that the traveling wood meets the cutting edge at less than ninety degrees while the handle still perpendicular to the wood then you have introduced a shear cut or scrape. Now if you then move the single bevel tool handle so that angle between the wood and the cutting edge is less than 90 degrees then you have a negative rake. So a negative rake can be achieved with a single bevel tool. A double bevel tool create a negative rake angle with the tool presented horizontally to the wood surface since the top bevel sloping down means there is less than 90 degrees between the cutting edge an the wood. To shear cut with this tool just twist the tool so that one edge is raised from the tool rest. Hopefully that helps.
@@WoodturningToolStore thanks so much. Appreciate your videos.
Actually when you said “we’ll start with theory” I was like Finally! Most of the stuff out there is seemingly sort of random as in “there’s no right way, blah blah”. You and a group of others are the ones I’m going to for better info, so thanks.
Tod, I was traveling Friday and missed the live broadcast. I am so thankful for this recording. It was excellent. I think I can do a decent hone on all of my tools using the information you presented. Take care and have a great day. Stay safe.🙂🙂
Fantastic Tod. Thanks for the time and effort.
You are very welcome. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome idea, how deep can this bore? for example I do vases with 2in diameter and 8in depth
The hook tool and hook tool bar can reach down to 8-10 inches. However, at that depth it would be scraping but still effective. To get a bevel rubbing cut you will be at a depth where you can get the handle in the correct position. This typically is a equal depth to diameter ratio.
Well done Tod, techniques I've done for decades but you're a better teacher.
Wow, thanks!
Is the hook tool used level and on center?
Yes, the way I use it. It is level and on center so the hook enters the starter hole. However, the cutting happens near the bottom of the hook so cutting takes place slightly below center but I arc horizontally from center to the rim.
🕶that was awesome. Thanks for the time and effort. Very thoughtful presentation.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Tod again for all the tips! Hopefully this will extend my scrapping experience.
Your welcome James. Thanks for watching.
I was there. Had a great time.🙂🙂
Good video. You are the first person to explain that blade drift is effected by blade position on the wheel crown. Even Alex Snodgrass does not say this. THAT is extremely helpful. Bandsaw manuals should explain that the blade should ride on the wheel/tire crown to minimize drift.
Thanks for the comment. I am glad you got something out of it. It is an important point about bandsaw blade drift. I should have had a camera pointed at the top wheel and the adjustment knob but I hope I explained it enough.
On KZread, but not seeing any comments yet.
Sounds good to me
The music is far too loud - and I love rock music, too! But I have to keep adjusting the volume when you're speaking and when the music plays.
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching. Yeah, audio leveling in my videos is not something I knew a lot about 3 years ago ...
Watched this live. Thanks.🙂🙂
I know this might be reaching, but will the cutter that goes on the woodcut hollower work on the crown revolution hollower? 13:30
Thank for including us!
Swat is a better experience then the AAW symposiums
Great show Tod, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Also your guest.
Glad you enjoyed it
👍
Nice sharpening grind.
Working on You tube and chat is working, using IPhone, Hello Tod, Roy Walker, Arlington Texas.
Great explanation of the mechanics of scraping. Highly recommend this video.
Wow, thanks Joe.
Didn’t get to finish watching the video so I’m home now watching it! So far very educational on shearing. Glad I got to watch most of it while at work. Going to be a game changer for me. Thank you Tod
Glad it was helpful!
Great idea and technically. Thanks Tod.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
What date is this? Live or recorded?
do you have a link to the casters you used? Do you mount your lathe to the top? thanks so much
