Turning a Thin Mesquite Platter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Produced by Tod Raines of Woodturning Tool Store on November 24, 2019
This video shows how I turn a wood log end grain cutoff into a thin platter. The wood is some very dry Mesquite. I use gouges, scrapers and the hook tool to create this thin platter. Enjoy.

This watched this one Tod, great video! I've got a few 2" thick Mesquite cookies and a Hook Tool, need to try this! Tony

Nice work! Love how thin you got it without it self destructing! Thanks for sharing

Like what you did. I am now going to turn a piece from Texas Mesquite. It seems to be very dry and very hard. Regular HSS tools don't do a good job , going to try carbide. The section is heart-shaped so it's an interrupted cut when I'm cutting through the bark. Any suggestions other than those in the video?

Bob, thanks for the comment and question. Only thing to add, if not said in the video, is to keep the tools sharp and keep the feed rate steady. Feed rate goes up as rpm goes up. So if you are turning at lower rpm then slow down your cutting speed.

HI Dave. Thanks. This platter was about 1/8" thick. Perhaps a little thinner in the center where the recess is.

I would have thought for endgrain one would only use a hook tool? Not a gouge.

Good questions ... Well this video shows that may tools can be used on end grain. The key is cutting in the right direction. Scraping is different than cutting.

What was the screw part that was held in the chuck to hold the platter initially? Thanks

The initial mounting is done with a wood worm screw. Most chuck manufacturers have a screw that can be held in the chuck. I used a 1/4" thick wooden dick just to shim the blank since it was not too thick. The screw is typically about an inch long and the shim allows for shallower holding.

So what brand of worm screw was used? It caught my eye that it looks to none held by the dovetail jaws.

@@Oscaro9928 Good catch. I forgot about that. This screw plate is held by the dovetail jaws. This one is a homemade that a friend gave me. The Axminster chuck kits come with a plated screw chuck that is held by the dovetail jaws. The Oneway and Vicmarc chucks use a screw chuck that is held in the center by the jaw slides. I hope that helps.
