In this video I describe the hook tool and how to use it. I have completed several demos using this tool and now present a tutorial of sorts on how to hone and use this tool.

Great demo. I now know what I’m doing wrong with not only my hook tool but also my Oneway Termite tool.

I ordered mine 5:30 EST on a Friday from work, the tool arrived Monday afternoon. Impossible to do any better than that. Very fine tool. I have been using Hosaluk inserts for some time so I was ready to go. Drilling out the center doesn’t seem like an option, it was the only way I could cut across the bottom. The tool cuts very vast and because your rubbing the bevel - it feels at least in my hands far better than the scraping of a carbide tool. This will take some practice as it truly makes quick work of hollowing end grain.

I’ve heard about hook tools, but this is the first I’ve seen one in action. Do you manufacture it yourself, Tod?

Thanks for the helpful video. What metal is this hook made of?

Tod, I just watched the video and am impressed by the hook tool. A couple of questions. Why do you state the tool is for end grain turning only? I do a lot of segmented turnings and I thought the tool would be good for that. It appeared the tool was having a bit of difficulty starting in the pilot hole. Would it have been better if that hole were a bigger diameter? After it got into clear wood it certainly cut well.

Awesome idea, how deep can this bore? for example I do vases with 2in diameter and 8in depth

The hook tool and hook tool bar can reach down to 8-10 inches. However, at that depth it would be scraping but still effective. To get a bevel rubbing cut you will be at a depth where you can get the handle in the correct position. This typically is a equal depth to diameter ratio.

Great video tutorial! I’ve been using a Oneway termite ring tool but get frustrated at it always plugging up. I turn green wood exclusively and this tool looks like it would be much better for that application. One question though, I do hollow forms that involve considerable undercutting. Would this be suitable for that?

Doug, thanks. I am glad you like the tutorial. It is difficult to get a deep undercut at the rim with the hook tool. To get the hook tool around that corner your handle will be at an extreme angle which means it will likely interfere with the rim on the other side. Using the hook tool in the 9:00 position is too aggressive and will result in a torque over type catch. Also, undercutting like this is cutting against the grain. This means mostly scraping will be done. I hope this makes sense.

Have you tried to cut on the up side of the bowl or box, etc. like the Eastern Europeans do? I find their videos and turning techniques amazing.

Is the hook tool used level and on center?

  • @WoodturningToolStore

Yes, the way I use it. It is level and on center so the hook enters the starter hole. However, the cutting happens near the bottom of the hook so cutting takes place slightly below center but I arc horizontally from center to the rim.
