The Air Combat Tutorial Library
My online name is Requiem and I am a real life flight instructor and airline pilot.
This tutorial channel explains flying concepts, fighter maneuvering, and air-air combat using various simulators. I try to be as accurate as possible without complicating concepts, so my videos are reviewed by professional airline and ex-USAF fighter pilots before release.
They are designed to help anyone learning about air combat or how to fly, so if you are looking to learn about how to fly or how to fight regardless of your chosen sim, then this is the place to come!

Great video. I already knew the 'how' when it comes to AoA, and what it is used for, but the technical 'why' knowhow really solidifies the concept. Curiously, more technical knowledge somehow made it more intuitive. As someone else mentioned, other videos either quickly glossed over it or skipped it all together. Thanks, I'll be watching the rest of your FA18 videos to see what else I can pick up.
How you pushing the controls in cockpit?
All done by assigning the controls to my joystick and throttle. You can't click that stuff like you can in DCS.
Very good video, a little too conservative on the engine in a mp server like combat box, i climb till 10k ft on 5min WeP & 10 min of combat power. Go to continues power from there on till CP or WEP is needed again. Been flying the 22 razer back model & i cooked my engine only once when i exceeded the maximum allowed WeP time.
Awesome video and channel. I love this plane.
hi from 2024 i hope you survived C-19, want to ask how and where do i get the hud on left bottom in this video?
Have a CEO SIGMA ACE PILOT MINDSET SO YOU CAN OWN YOUR ALPHA PLANES
Thank you! Clear and concise information! 😊
Didnt Allcock and Ball fly across the Atlantic i one of those ?
No idea but if they did it would have been a hell of a trip haha
@@RequiemsACTL ok it was allcock and brown (not ball) and they flew across the atlantic in 1919 in a vickers vimy bomber (not a gotha).
@@nigellacey559 Cool to know! I'll have to look it up and read about it
Very nice landing 🦋🧈
I didn't get to do take off and landing in this but it was such great fun flying everything else (silly insurance 😂)
@@RequiemsACTL It would have been an even nicer landing, then! :D
Can the level bombing speeds and reference altitudes also be used for attacking land targets, or is all this specific to anti-shipping attacks?
You can use it for ground targets
thanks for your video! a small question regarding supercharger control panel: what does M.S. and F.S. mean? Manual and Flight?
Man....I remember I used to know it but can't think of it off the top of my head. Let me check my manuals and I'll get back to you
MS moderate supercharger, FS full supercharger
@@RequiemsACTL thanks!!
Is there a way to get that same map you are showcasing for us? 2:16 I would love to inspect my own fights, Learn and starting to take notes, but this visual aid you got here is so good! Is this within war thunder still?
It's a program called Tacview, in this video I'm using the Il-2 Great Battles series
@@RequiemsACTL I thank you so much for such a quick answer back! Ill give it a look for sure! See you in the skies brother! o7
Hey bro we need the DCS Fw190 A8 bombing manual.
This appears to be a modern immelman, or an inverted split S. The original Immelman was VERY different, involving using the rudder to reposition your aircraft for another diving attack
Yep exactly. The original one was different because the guy was flying an Eindecker with wing warping....so I'll never believe this maneuver to be what was originally flown. The only thing in common that I would see is that they both achieve a course reversal.
@@RequiemsACTL Yeah, the Eindecker, poor as its roll rate was, the rudder and elevator were highly responsive, which he made good use of in this move. I wonder why they call this one an "Immelman" still even though it differs from the original?
The Crystal Light just got released, at £600 without local dimming, and £850 with local dimming. Is the local dimming worth it in your opinion?
The local dimming is nice, but I'm not sure if I would miss it too much. It adds a little bit extra to the overall image.
I'm holding my breath for crystal light.
Very cool!
Weird. I never knew actual BCM but from flying so much I'd pick up little things that work. I used to call a low yo-yo "cutting the circle in half."
Yep, these don't even really need names but they help with understanding things better. All these maneuvers are just solutions to BFM problems that get presented to you. After some practice it becomes intuitive what you need to do to solve the problem!
There’s also the 2 circle vertical fight. One plane pulls a loop jnto the vertical, the other pushes the stick forwards, driving the plane into the ground. It’s important to eject first. With enough practice you can catch your opponent, boss, wife, family and kids off guard.
Superb tutorial.. Awesome work mate.. you are criminally under appreciated
Thanks Ian :)
Thank God I can fly my 262 it’s been sitting in my back yard for years
it's a wonderful airplane to fly, although very susceptible to damage and loss of aircraft in DCS
I think that's true, especially when anti aircraft fire gets involved with their super accuracy and tracking
This looks like a worthy upgrade to my G2, although I wonder how well it will work with a 5800X3D and a 3080 Ti. There are now rumours that there will be 2 new versions of this headset coming out, one of them will have no battery and a reduced price tag. That sounds pretty tempting...
Your 3080ti is a step up from my 3070, and I still ran DCS and Il-2 with playable FPS using it before I upgraded so I'd expect you to be fine
Less than half the price is the new Crystal Light. Worthy consideration!
a small question: how do you know exactly that a pilot of P-51D (in IL-2 sim) has that G-suit? in Russian community website, there's no data/description regarding the G-suit for Mustangs, neither we have it as a pre-flight option in game
My understanding is that it's based on their historical timeframe of service. When the P-51D P-47D and P-38J were flying in combat the G-suit was standard issue to their pilots.
Why the hell that every time you guys put out an update it screws something else up? I tell you what, I am going on You Tube on every site and explain to people how much a pain is the ass this headset is. From having to restart your computer just to turn in on. Now the Eye tracking justs stops working which means I have to recalibrate, which means leaving game and restarting computer, now my batteries are only lasting an hour. Oh and the little bracket that holds your head strap to the headset will break it's a cheap little piece of plastic, It's like putting a Fiat motor in a Roll Royce, The Fix? Take a hacksaw blade and cut a slit in the actual headset. This is not me folks. I have had this headset since day one. You want to make me happy? Send me a new one. I will not send you this one until I have a new one in hand because I do not trust you, I never did get my free lens you promised when I was one of the first 500.
A great tutorial, and a smooth landing! However I was wondering if there was a specific keybind to operate the Fuel feed selector in the 109? Not being able to operate it has been bugging me since I started playing IL-2.
No, there's no specific binding for that as manipulating the fuel system isn't what they originally envisioned the gameplay including. Manual control of the fuel system was being developed at one time in the last couple of years but I'm not sure if they've continued working on it.
Thags PogChamp !
Thank you very much for the review! Currently upgrading my PC and also looking for vr. Eventhough the crystal is quite expensive I might go for it as a worthwile investment for my flight simming.

Thanks for all your videos, really saved me for the Duck and other BoS and BoN planes, hoping to see your ME 410 and Mosquito videos soon. I see you also fly the Mosquito in DCS, how comparable are the 2? Like if I use your DCS videos for the numbers (like rotation and landing speeds, boost pressure settings ect) will the 2 match up do you think?
The Mosquito in Il-2 is not modeled correctly which is why I haven't made a video for it. Simply put, the turning tendencies for the Il-2 Mosquito are backwards. After my reports were ignored about it as a beta tester this motivated me to make a video for the DCS Mosquito instead. All of my videos are what I think of as being "sim agnostic" because they're always based on an airplane's real life manuals and performance figures, so if you fly the same airplane in different sims they are still a good reference.
@@RequiemsACTL that's great to hear. I discovered that from by P-51 notes for DCS and your notes for the one here in IL-2. Super glad to hear that the 2 sims match up well.
And for extra irony, no plane that Immelmann ever flew was capable of this maneuver.
Yep! I created a video years and years ago showing what the original immelman turn actually was and a few people lost their minds at me LOL
Amazing detail on this, good animation as well
If the forward gunner sat down out of the way, the pilot could see to take off and land, top speed was 97mph
Another question: How do you know if you've exceeded the MTOW on a plane? DCS has a handy little number on the re-arm/re-fuel screen that goes orange if exceeded. Does IL2 have something similar?
No unfortunately it doesn't. I advocated for this when I was a beta tester but they didn't listen to me.
Can you show how to do conopy roll at F-5 aircraft. Which control surfaces uses? Thx.
About the cable pulling the head. My solution is to press the cable between the waist and the back of the chair, and then pull up a little (not too much, just a little). In this way, as long as your waist is not too far away from the chair, the cable allowance can always allow you to turn your neck freely.
Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try next time I fly!
Thorough review! Thank you
Great review, thank you! But all the fiddly things needed to get this running and keep it running just turn me off. I came to the PC era where we were still fiddling with IRQ jumpers. Never again. Track IR always works I use the same profile for all my sims and it is not hot, sweaty and heavy. Someday the technology will become just as simple as Track IR.
Thanks Tony, for me coming from a small amount of VR experience getting used to this definitely had a learning curve. Once I had everything sorted out though the experience has become much more streamlined where I can just turn the headset on and start playing, but the hard part is just getting to that point where it's all set up how you like it and that took a long time for me. I'm with you though, by the time VR technology becomes more accessible and cheap enough with excellent all encompassing visuals is when TrackIR will be a backup for the simulations we use.
Do you know if its possible to spawn into a campaign mission with the engines in a 'cold and dark' state?
No I don't think it's possible. The taxiing pathway of AI doesn't work well enough to be used in a PWCG campaign I believe...
That’s a shame. Although I’m sure there’s a fix online I can download to help with this issue. Thanks for the response 👍.
The Crystal has significant stability problems as you mentioned. And these are not only because the Crystal is still relatively new. Just getting Pimax headsets to reliably startup and connect has always been an issue for the entire life of the company so far. It's amazing to me that Pimax still can't even get just turning their device on right after all these years. Pimaxians will make excuses for these problems, but there is no excuse when even basic stuff stays broken for release after release after release. The problems you've mentioned are not all of the problems. The workarounds you found will work for some other people, but not everyone. You'll also find over time that your workarounds will stop working, and you'll need to discover other workarounds instead. Pimax's software is the weakest part of their product. It has gotten a little better over time, but stability is still clearly not a major focus of the company. It continues to shock me the stuff Pimax is willing to release in a broken state and leave broken for months or years. And yet the Crystal has the most beautiful visuals available for PCVR on the market. It's great when it works. If you can get it to work. And this is a roll of the dice. Some people have been lucky and had few problems. Others run into all of the problems. Just don't buy a Pimax product expecting smooth sailing. For myself, I've been running a Pimax 8KX for years. I was able to get it mostly stable, and it's been a solid workhorse eventually. I purchased two Crystals and returned them both because of too many critical problems. I'm waiting for Pimax to fix their most major issues (like their half second of audio latency) before I may try again.
Decent video except you only mention rudder a single time then make zero further reference to it. That is what I watched the video hoping to hear about
Generally speaking there isn't a whole lot to say with rudder use, basically it's use whatever amount is needed to remain coordinated in any maneuver.
For those of us in Canada, Winwing stuff is WAY cheaper than any other sim hardware. I paid $331 CAD all-in ($240 USD) for my Orion 2 F15 throttle (took 5 days to get to me), and it will cost me the same for the F16 stick. That's even cheaper than the now very outdated TM Warthog. I currently have a VKB Gladiator NXT stick (cost me about $230 CAD) so I'm not looking to upgrade currently. Virpil stuff (to Canada) is more than double the cost...way out to lunch.
I bought Winwing's F-15EX throttle as well to replace the Warthog throttle, that was money well spent for me.
is there any hand tracking?
Yes there is a hand tracking addon
Build quality is lacking but the resolution is incredible.
great video, the plug in you talk about is not available anymore.
Yeah I noticed that too after I already had the video ready, hopefully one day it can be implemented as it was quite a nice enhancement!
Very good review. Thank you
thanks for the video that shows many important aspects, my thoughts are that for a price like this I would only consider an almost 99% issue free product, instead as in other reviews I 'm seeing that are still many things that need to be fixed ..
Reduce or disable oversampling (super sampling). You don't need it thanks to the Crystal's clarity (you'll still read the dials just fine) and you'll gain extra fps. (YMMV)
Perfect timing for me. I'm just about to order mine. I've been using a G2 for about 12 months for IL-2 until I bought the Quest 3 which apart from it's battery life is so much better due to it's larger sweet spot. but even with an external battery I can only get around 4 hours life out of it.
I had G2, now Q3 unfortunately Q3 is not good enough for me.
Once you get past the set up and tweaking I'm sure you will enjoy it
Great review! However, don't expect a spectacular improvement in MSFS after upgrading your CPU: you will be able to configure your settings in higher levels (which is great) but it's difficult to raise the VR FPS above 45 in that sim.
Ok that's good to know. I had no idea how much FPS I could get out of it. I don't feel so bad now haha At least it's smooth enough to be playable which is good.
Best CPU for MSFS is Ryzen 7800x3D , like dozen fps more than i9 14900k
