I work on container ships and this channel will feature content from my life and job onboard as well as my life at home on my off time. Hey I'm 24 and graduated college a few months back, been tossing the idea between this and the military. If you're able to answer a question for me it would be fantastic, are there any benefits to becoming a mariner with a b.a. degree? Any pay differences or opportunities for quicker advancement? No because we really don't apply and get hired by the company we work for unions and we get the jobs through the Union...🚢😎🌊⚓️

is SIU good for a 20-year-old? After i get all those identifications i can just join the program? Also what does starter pay look like for someone going the SIU route. I really like how it isnt 4 years. Thank you.
Sure that is a perfect age you can contact the school and ask them when they can get you into the training program and they will tell you what things you need to get before you go there I know you will also need a safety class and basic safety training but you might be able to get that one you're there I think... contact the school and ask them what documents you should apply before you go to the training program and when they think they can get you in... All I can say Jeff is it's a huge improvement over what I had on the old Waterman lash ship's. The cabin was not even half the size and you shared the head. And might I add Maersk does have some of the nicest cabins on any merchant ships.
Yes Paul I remember the older ships and sometimes there were two cabins and one head in the middle. Things definitely have come a long way

Our ships only generally have a crew of 20 so there is plenty of space to have a better size cabin

Container ships generally pay very well.

These ships I work on only have a crew of 20 so the rooms are larger than they would be on a ship with a lot of people. Everyone has a room like this

Hopefully you haven't tried to smuggle a cat onboard. I've heard that doesn't work out well.
No because I am highly allergic to cats but one time I had a pot belly pig on a ship for a short time... he was very happy but then I got him a good home at a farm with a couple other pot belly pigs and he was very happy there

Yes on these chips I work on everyone has a nice room like this the reason is we only have a crew size of about 20 people so unlike for example Navy ships room is not an issue

Red Dwarf was a favourite of my uncle when he was at sea in the navy back when it first came out.
Yes that has always been my absolute favorite show sometimes when I'm working on the ship I imagine I am on the mining ship Red Dwarf, lol.😎🌊🚢⚓️
does the captain hold your passport mmc and twic? or they just scan em then u take them to your room?
Every ship is slightly different but the ship I am on now the captain has it.
Can you make another Gear Video? I know you already have a video on the basics of what you should bring on ship, like painkillers, coveralls, etc. But can you get into specifics like what kind of multitool or pocket knife, gloves, ear and eye protection, boots, you recommend? And specific brands and possibly even models? Is the tool different for oiler vs deck hand able bodied? For like cutting ropes vs something the engineers use? Pretty much Leatherman and a classic Bucknife? Red wing steel toe boots? Carhart for all clothes? Dickies? Thanks
Sure I will make another video like that but some things are just preferential... But I will talk about the things that I bring when I go to the ship and including a little more detail sure I will do that real soon... I can make the video while I'm here on the ship and then just post it when I get back home

We always have a security team with us on the ship but I remember one time many years ago Pirates had tried to approach the ship we were on but when they saw the security team they turned the other way... but I have had no recent experience with that in many years

I’ve only sailed on the Patriot gray ships, and they have nice gyms. That one leaves a lot to be desired. Are most commercial ships gyms that spartan?
Not really... from my observation, it is basically a ship to ship thing. When the permanent crew on the ship is really interested in using the gym it tends to be a little more equipped, but regardless you have to work with the space available
