Breathe Ocean Conservation

Breathe Ocean Conservation

In June/July 2017 I will be attempting to cross one of the Oceans 7 Channel Crossings: Molokai to Oahu (26 miles or 40km). This is an extremely challenging swim of which I have often been warned is “not to be taken lightly”. The channel is known as The Valley of Bones because of its unforgiving conditions such as unpredictable wind, strong currents and big surf. If I complete the swim, I will be the first South African to do so. Last year I kicked off with my first preparatory swim and swam from Umhlanga to Durban (18km) becoming the first woman to do this swim. I also swam the “Four Elements Ocean Challenge”. In December I dared the icy waters of Cape Town and did the Freedom swim from Robben Island to Blouberg. The Cape Point Challenge and a solo swim from Umdloti to Durban will be some of my many more preparatory swims planned for this year.
The main objective of these preparatory swims and my ultimate channel crossing is to create awareness of the dire need for ocean conservatio

    agreed but in open water long distance swimming only a 2 beat kick is required for balance- a heavy 6 beat kick will expend too much unnecessary energy

    Hi Sarah. I really appreciate that you share all the details of your training and preparation. I’m sure these come from hard lessons learned. I’m turning 50 next year and have started training in Feb. Initially 250m and now I’m up to comfortable 2.2km per session and shaved off 25% on pace. I’m lucky to live close to the sea (WC), so I do one sea swim per week, making sure I pay close attention to what I learn each time. My main issues have been chafing under my arms and discomfort in my R shoulder and R ankle. I’m making small adjustments to my stroke and doing some strength training. I’ve realised that swimming alone is not sufficient training. But right now, after 40min in the sea I’ve chafed so badly that I need to stop. So not cold, fitness or sea conditions but my own skin halting progress. I was hoping to find anti-chafe products on your website. I’ve tried several products from my pharmacy but nothing last more than 30min. Any ideas? Do male athletes wax their armpits?

  • @sarahferguson6946
    @sarahferguson694610 ай бұрын

    HI- Thank you for your note- Unfortunately we do not have any anti chafe product, I generally use vaseline and most swimmer find that helps- Lanoleum is even more effective as it is thicker and stays on for longer. A lot of swimmers do shave under their arms which can help. Good technique is also super helpful. It would be helpful if you could get someone to film you swimming to show where you may be going wrong. Subtle changes to your stroke can make a massive difference. Good luck and thank you for reaching out!

    First and foremost - Great swim! I have to disagree with something, however; I do not think that layer of fat under the skin helps with keeping someone warm when it comes to swimming, let me explain. Fat can store temperature, which can help mitigate temperature changes, for instance its +40C outside fat will collect heat from outside or just a body temperature which is around +36C, and person starts swimming in 20C water, it will take longer for body to cool down inside the water due to thermal mass that fat stored just before getting into water (like any other material can do), I would assume it will take tens of minutes for water to work out that temperature stored in fat and since there is no walkout of the water, so no chance for fat to collect temperature, presumably outside is warmer than water. One could argue its harder to make a movement with extra fat which will result in producing more heat, but then I do not think of any benefits here, may as well just make more strokes. Other points like buoyancy and extra energy of course can be beneficial on such an event!

  • @breatheocean1
    @breatheocean1 Жыл бұрын

    Thank you! Yes all valid points ou make and I agree, there is a fine balance between extra fat and weight and power to body ratio, having the extra fat does allow for it to be used as a reserve in longer and staged swims too. The warmth is debatable le but if you look at most cold water swimmers, they are larger tba yor warm water and pool swimmers. But you are right in that it is debatable in weather it keeps you warm

  • @sarahferguson6946
    @sarahferguson6946 Жыл бұрын

    thank you! the most important thing for the kayaker to the swimmer, is to keep the swimmer swimming in as direct a line as possible. It is helpful to alternate which side of the swimmer you paddle on after every feed. It is also helpful to keep next to the swimmer, nit too far in front and not behind, so the swimmer can see you every time you breathe. Having a whistle is a massive help to get attention for the swimmer when you need them to move. Make sure you stay well hydrated and fed as well. The other helpful thing is to steer the swimmer away from blue bottles and jelly fish by using the whistle or pointing. Figure out some hand signals with your swimmer ahead of time and make communication clear. Good luck!
