7 Open water Swimming Tips for Midmar Mile
Tip 1 - Breathing - Breathe out bubbles into the water with nose and mouth, breathe in with your mouth. Keep relaxed, slow steady breathing. I breathe every 2 and 3 strokes. Bilateral breathing is helpful
Tip 2 - Sighting- every couple of 100 metres you will need to lift your head and sight. There are bouys every 400m, use those as your guide. Find a landmark and use that for direction.
Tip 3 - Relax- don’t panic, long slow, steady strokes will help you get into a rhythm
Tip 4 - Pre-nutrition- eat and make sure you are well hydrated before the swim
Tip 5 - Kicking- a relaxed 2 beat kick is key
Tip 6 - Technique- high elbow, long strokes, hip rotation
Tip 7 - Pacing- start slow, go your own pace, try and maintain that pace for the 1st 3 sections (1200m) and if you have energy pick up your pace at the end.
Good Luck for Midmar Mile 2020 and all your Open Water Swimming this year.

Kicking is a key part of maintaining rhythm and momentum as well as balance. This is how it enables you to reduce energy consumption.

agreed but in open water long distance swimming only a 2 beat kick is required for balance- a heavy 6 beat kick will expend too much unnecessary energy

Very usefull tips, in one of my races I was swimming right into the sunset and I lost my line had to swim extra 5 minutes LOL. Could you do videos regularly like every 2 weeks. One point in each video so we can get time to practice it meanwhile.
