whats even more terrifying is that the vast size of space makes everything you know and do seem worthless in the long run. it completely ruins your sense of purpose because you know that the stuff you do today will never reverberate across the universe by a long shot. nothing matters

the day my megalophobia started was when i was shown a video of "what if [insert planet name here] replaced our moon?" the video was being played on a large projector screen in my hs astronomy class and i never looked at the moon the same way again,.

When I was a kid, I used to wonder or imagine what it would be like if there were these planet or even star sized creatures that could live in space. Not like aliens from other worlds, but enormous creatures in space itself that feed from the energy of gas giants or stars and "swim" through the void like blue whales in our ocean's depths. Then I saw that one episode of StarTrek: The Next Generation where there was something just like that except it was feeding off the energy of The Enterprise. And then years later I also saw that video of what looked like this enormous pod (much bigger than Earth), with some sort of tail or limb or what have you that appeared to be drawing plasma from our sun and then disappeared. It made me think of the creatures I used to envision and that episode of S.T.N.G. and then I wondered just what sort of information Gene Roddenberry was privy to.

you haven't learned to love the distance, that we are only somewhat safe because of these immense distances. you should not fear the large numbers, you should appreciate that somehow we are hidden from the malevolent intelligences in the cosmos and we have some defenders(jupiter, saturn) in our solar system that are big enough to help divert extra-terrestrial objects(asteroids etc)

2:28 to 2:58 Yeah it'd be horrible but we'd also all get the most unique death any of us have ever experienced. We'd be the first and most likely last living things to be destroyed by a gas giant such as Jupiter in all of the Universe's history for all we know. Though whatever would send us on that collision course with Jupiter in the first place would most likely kill us all before we even make it to Jupiter.

The only reason I like this video, is that it shows real space. It doesn’t sugar coat it, and make it so astonishing. It shows the truth. It shows the living hell that these planets have to offer.

I've always loved the eerie atmosphere of planets like in the game Iron Lung. There's just something awesomely terrifying about abandoned, completely lifeless rocky bodies. I just imagine being the only alive human on there, and it's creepy as hell!

I get it, there are many hostile planets. The universe is a very dangerous an unimaginably vast place. But what's disappointing is the realization that an intelligent young man could be genuinely terrified by thoughts of places he'll never visit.

  • @doge2698

Honestly I don't have astrophobia, I love, LOVE space, its full of interesting worlds to discover and explore, although it does contain a scary question with both scary awnsers: Are we alone in the universe? No or Yes? Think about it, Yes means we are all alone in the endless cosmos, but No means that there might be/are more civilisations put there, maybe more intelligent. We aren't aware what they look like or how they would act? Maybe they're creeping though space undetected, aware of our presence coming to destroy us.

I love space, its very beautiful Im sure if bacteria could think like we did they would think we are incomprehensible monsters of death and terror aswel, but we are just existing the way we are supposed to, just like planets and stars. Death is death, whether you die on earth or somewhere else, its not really a good scale of whether something is threatening/ terrifying or not, even if they would kill us, space is completely neutral Thats why the things that scare me the most are evil humans who kill with thought and purpose even if they could choose not to do it But oh well im also scared of bugs who are also neutral so its not like i dont understand how it is to have a irrational fear
