WWII's Forgotten Axis Power - The Kingdom of Iraq

Ойын-сауық

It's a little known fact that Iraq (specifically: the Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq) was an Axis power during the second world war. Iraq would fight against the British and Indians in the Middle East in conjunction with Germany, Italy, and Vichy France.

Growing up in Iran, we were told of a 20k Iranian SS division which took part in defense of Germany against Russians, not sure how true that is, but Reza Khan, the pro German Shah WAS removed and neutral Iran annexed by US, British and Russian forces and his pro American son put in place, that's how the allied leaders ended up in the Tehran conference and were pictured in that famous photo.

@@TheZerech I think the confusion is that while you are correct that peoples from a vast number of countries from the south central steps down to the Persian Gulf and across to the Caucasus are all considered members of the Iranian language family , they have not all been Iranian nationals. Some of those regions have been a part of the country in the past like Afganistan and Tajikistan and some have never been. Iranian nationals today are also not an ethnic unit, they are Persians, Arabs, Kurds, Balooch, Lor, Azeri .... depending on where in Iran they live. But putting aside the differences between ethnic groups versus Language groups, there are so many cross overs in history that they never teach us, nothing is black and white as they want us to think.

You did forget to mention the "Sunni only policy" (which basically gave more rights to Sunni faction Muslims) which is pretty important for understanding why Shia uprisings even happened in the first place because without the policy, there wouldn't be uprisings. My father, a Royal Navy radio telegrapher, spent his war based in Basra. He was on a ship that was part of the picket for the HMSs Repulse and Prince of Wales but due to illness (Amoebic Dysentery) whilst on shore leave in Trincomalee, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) he was in hospital when the order to sail for the South China Sea was issued. When passed fit for duty and with no ship to serve on he had a long train journey up India to Deolalli Camp, Bombay (Mumbai) Deolalli was a large mental hospital requisitioned by the Army - when you go 'Doolally' that's where it comes from!) a boat across the Indian Ocean, up the Arabian Gulf to Iraq where he joined a small force guarding the stores for an army that would have been required had the Germans prevailed against the Soviets and managed to push south, threatening the middle eastern oilfields. He had an easy war, his life never in danger. A list of names. A tick of a box in a ministry thousands of miles away in London. Many were not so lucky...

The film depicts Lawrence's experiences in the Ottoman provinces of Hejaz and Greater Syria during the First World War, in particular his attacks on Aqaba and Damascus and his involvement in the Arab National Council. Its themes include Lawrence's emotional struggles with the violence inherent in war, his identity and his divided allegiance between his native Britain with its army, and his new-found comrades within the Arabian desert tribes.

let's be clear Iraq didn't fight the British because of their alliance with the Axies but because they were invaded and ruled by the British. plus the Axies were the only ones willing to trade weapons with Iraq so they had to accept the deal better than being re-colonized. I know this vid is not trying to make Iraq look bad but some people will try to use it to justify the invasion by saying "they supported nazis".

There were also indians in ss divison. Some turkmenistan in ss and so on. And of course some fought at the end of ww2 against the soviets, which made up thousands of soldiers. It's convenient to confuse 21st century Neo Nazis with their opinions and behaviours and historical national socialism for the sake of "all Nazi bad" but that shouldn't be the approach of people interested in nuance and truth. Nazi Germany having been hostile towards non whites is a bit of a misconception. Obviously ethnically homogenious Germany without colonies and in trouble and turmoil itself was politically not occupied with non-whites to begin with but the german mindest towards brown and black people might quite likely on the on hand entail the common european conception of collective (not individual) superiority which was however at least equally predominant in the UK and the USA. Most Germans likely thought it to be odd to live in a multi racial society and certainly didn't wish that for themselves but they were also capable of showing empathy towards black people as shown by the cheering crowd when Jesse Ownes won the sprinting contest at Olympia in Berlin. There are several accounts on Hitlers reaction to Owens and it's not paranoid to suspect the negative accounts entail made up propaganda. To my knowledge Owens never condemned Hitler or voiced discontent over his behaviour towards him or his treatment in Germany.

Basically Westerner looking for any justification to claim that enemy of American are just like Nazus. Why would it be so weird to cooperates, economically and technology wise with a country that are well know for both of those thing? What choices does these semi-colonized newly form country have? are they strong enough to oppose older Colonial power like British? France? Belgium? NO. Whom are willing to work with these newly forms country? definitely the USSR, but they are also news, still fighting a civil wars till the late 30s, and are hated by all the colonial blocks for being the sole country that are ran by the working class (perfect or not, doesn't matter) and not by the Capitalist class, which all colonial block are. But then Germany under Weimar open trades with you, what do you do? not accepting it? Prevent the receiving of investment to industrialize yourself so you can better off your country people lives and be able to defend yourself latter on? Clearly you HAVE to accept the deal, because you have the luxury of choosing, it is either get industrialize and suffer through it's consequence so one day you can takes back the powers and uses what you have gains to better your people, OR get re-colonize by colonial empire like Britain and France. Even if the Weimar get replace by the Nazus, what choice do you have? Your Don't. It does not matter what you think about them, it matter less what they thinks of you when they don't actively want to wipes you out (yet), you take whatever chance you can to arms yourself in preparation for the day to come, if they or the colonial block decide your existence are the problem between Western Capitalist, Nazus or Neo-lib centrist from privatizes your entire country.
