    Thanks for all the videos! It’s a 9 mile minimum, it’s not just the engine oil but that same oil is in the transmission. I’ve done the 10 minute idle thing and have found 2 minutes of idle gives the same reading. Crazy those kanuks but I love them.

    You said those with a 2024 can am can use Apple CarPlay for apps. That is incorrect as although can am is still advertising them with car play they in fact do not have acp. It is not currently available for them, also since no CarPlay, no brp connect either, oh and phone loses connection all the time and keep having to repair to play music from phone.

    Hmmm, is it really madness... or perhaps genius 🤔🙄 It is definitely unusual and inconvenient. But let's pretend we're engineers at BRP. We're designing a new and unusual 3 wheel motorcycle. The DIrector of R&D calls all of us, all the design engineers, into a room and gives us a challenge to come up with a process of checking the oil to get a reliable and consistent result, no matter where in the world, no matter what time day or night, no matter what month in the year, and no matter what the outside ambient temperature is, but a process that virtually has the same result when checking the oil. And finally, we geeky engineers come up with the idea that the oil needs to be checked at pretty much the exact same temperature within 2 minutes of shutting off the engine. The 9-mile ride gets the oil pumped throughout the engine and transmission. The10-minutee idle will get the engine to its specific target operating temperature. You probably have noticed your fan kicks on and off when you're idling in stop and go traffic, or at a long red light. When idling for 10 minutes, the fan will at some point kick in. The fan coming on and off is keeping the temperature at the target operating level, no matter what the ambient temperature is. Keep in mind, checking the oil in Phoenix Arizona in July, could mean the cold engine oil could be 110 degrees, while checking a cold engine in Fargo North Dakota in March, the engine oil could be below 32 degrees. BRP's oil checking method kinda sucks, I agree... but it's also kinda smart. 😳☺️ But what do I know, I'm a retired bean counter 🤪

  • @SpyderMinimalist

    All good points. I wonder why the other motorcycle manufacturers don’t have similar procedures? I wonder if perhaps the Can-Am engineers know something the folks at Honda or Suzuki don’t, or vice versa.

  • @SpyderWayne
    @SpyderWayne6 сағат бұрын

    @SpyderMinimalist I was only guessing. I don't have a clue why the procedure for Spyders is so unusual, but BRP must have their reasons, and they are certainly not a company that tries to copy other companies 😁

    Thank you for a good video Chris. I am not very much for American football either, nor the football Yall call soccer lol. As a funny side note. My grandfather was born by Swedish homesteaders in NW Kansas in the 1890s. Grew up in a ranch. The wife in the neighbors ranch has a brother, when he visited he taught all the kids including my grandma how to shoot a pistol. My grandma got his first revolver at age 5. Neighbours brothers name was William Cody but was nicknamed Buffalo Bill Cody. Oil change. I may be wrong but the manual may very well be a bad translation from French. It’s probably that taken into account a Quebec winter and how long time it would take to warm up the engine and have all oil move. OR, 10 min idling. The idling is stupid. In Europe most countries have laws against more than 2 minutes and even more often 1 minute of Idling. Reasons are the more excessive exhausts, health problems that can occur, as well as idling really wears on an engine compared to actually driving. If Can-Am really cared about the environment they should not recommend idling for 10 minutes. Cheers from Mexico

    Regarding the seat - amazed at how comfortable the RTL seat is. My only issue was air flow - not enough to prevent me from getting sweaty where I don't want to be. My solution was to stop in at (horrors) a Harley Davidson dealer in Loveland, CO and pick up a Circulator Large Seat Pad. For me that worked much better than an Air Hawk. I was able to borrow both from other riders in my group before making a decision. The Circulator isn't a miracle, but I found myself squirming far less with it than without it and am really glad I made the (expensive) purchase.

    Regarding Distance to Empty (DTE) - I just completed a 15 day, 4600 mile trip on my 2024 RTL. DTE was all over the place (way high as well as low) as was MPG on the Trip B meter which is the one I use for tracking my tank. I tried to be very consistent with my fill ups, using a flashlight so I could see the gas level and get it to the bottom of the filler tube. Always able to put in more after the pump clicked off, though unfortunately, I never checked how much more. I'll do that as a return to normal riding. What I concluded regarding DTE and MPG is that the computer takes some time to figure out the mileage you are getting based on the riding you have been and are doing. So it will read low after a high speed high headwind run across Utah, for example. And eventually it would settle in. But when I'm touring, I'll stick with runs carefully and conservatively planned so that I know I'll make it to the next gas stop. The meters make for interesting information, but I'm not going to plan my stops based on what I'm seeing on them. Other than how many miles I've run since the last gas stop per my Trip B meter.

    I bought Tackform cellphone mounts for both of my Spyders from MotorcycleDave’s. They have the anti vibration option and a ram mount that uses one of the handlebar mounting bolts to secure it. The Tackform is great, holds very securely without chance of improper installation, requires no special dingus on the back of my phone case which doesn’t take up anymore space in my pocket. It’s very quick to mount the phone securely and just as fast to remove it. It can also handle any modern phone with or without a case.

    The seat backrest screw is easily accessible when the seat is removed. Instructions for that are in the owner’s manual. Unlock the seat, pull the large bottle-opener looking thingy down low near the rear and lift the backrest up to remove it. Use the Allen Wrench in the tool kit to adjust the screw that is seen when the bottom seat leather is pushed upward. Counter clockwise moves the backrest forward and vice versa. Hope this helps. I found a video from CanAm on KZread on how to pair your Sena with the Spyder. I found out that I needed to pair my Sena before pairing my Android phone to the Spyder. Once I accomplished that properly, the BRP go app works perfectly. I can listen to music with an old ipod wired in the glove compartment. The gps app I use will override the music when it needs to. I can listen to SiriusXm radio with the app on my phone through the sound system or in my helmet. I can use my phone without touching it as it is kept in that small compartment. The BRP connect system just works fine for me and the BRP go app is sufficient for my needs. I ride my Spyder to enjoy riding; if it didn't have the connectivity, it wouldn't bother me. Cheers Chris!

    I own a 2021 and a 2022 Spyder RTL. My wife and I wear Shoei Neotec 3 helmets and we each have Cardo Packtalk Edge comms. You have to have your phone paired via Bluetooth to your bike and the comms paired via Bluetooth to your phone and finally your comms paired to your bike via Bluetooth. If you have a stand alone navigation system that too needs to be paired with Bluetooth to your comms. The instruction manual for your comms should tell you how to switch between the different devices for pairing. The factory FM radio receiver is very weak and the presets are a waste of time. There is a huge sound upgrade once you begin streaming music once pairs with your phone. This will give you great sound through the factory speakers. You then can control volume with the bike’s audio controls.Some music apps that have multiple station access can also be saved as favorites on your phone and the bike can toggle between them again with the joystick audio control. You do not need a paid music streaming account unless you only want to listen to the music you have downloaded and saved. There are many free services that give you radio access to many different public stations like “LITT” or “iHeart” plus they have their own channels. Personally, I enjoy listening to “The Loop” app for commercial free rock music. The comms system has very good FM radio reception and no matter what you listen to is exceptional sound quality. The comms system has over rides built into them. For example, you can listen to music from any input and if your phone map or navigation system has a suggestion it interrupts the music so you won’t miss out on the information. It also interrupts if you get a phone call or engage in conversation amongst fellow riders that you have paired with. The comms system will even allow you to share your music with other riders. These comms systems take time for everyone to learn and understand how to access all of the features. This is a process that you need to go through after you buy a new system, install it then head out on that long excursion you have planned.

No matter what I would have on the bike, it cant compete to the inside helmet speakers. Some phone have built in radio, uses the headset as antenna. My 2nd last phone was a Nokia, yes, they still do exist. That worked liked that. I have TuneIn, and there are a number of similar radio apps, and it works great. Being someone like me that travel long distance have way across the world, FM stations just dont make it that far. I could listen to my favourtie Swedish stations in North Carolina or Mexico. My gripe was, that many time, it was not live, it was a recorded loop. I do not know if it is like that anymore, but it was quite annoying. Safe ridings. Cheers from Swede in Mexico.
