    Hello Again, Quick question .. Question about ST1 which I currently connect the cable to the phone to play music, there is a little button next to it what is that for.. also I feel Ike I have a bring the fader up all the way to get a good sound. Thanks again

  • @stageleftaudio
    @stageleftaudio2 күн бұрын

    The ST* inputs are for stereo inputs, most commonly used for the returns from outboard effects units (reverb, delay, etc...). Even though the inputs can support stereo, we used them only for mono returns. The button next to the ST* knobs just indicates where the input signal needs to be routed to... either to the input channel/fader, or directly to the L/R output of the console, bypassing the input fader; it's common to keep the switch UP so the signal stays routed on the input fader. For the volume issue you mentioned, make sure your phone volume is turned all the way up. Next, make sure the "gain" for the ST1 input is turned up (but not all the way... this could produce distortion). If you have done all this and you still don't have good volume, you may need to use something like a passive DI box that will convert the output signal level of your phone to a level designed for consoles. We use a Radial "Stage Bug" SB-5 when connecting phones, MP3 players, laptops to our systems. Hope this helps.

    The only knob you need to turn is the ST1 one; use the PFL feature on the input channel you are using to see how "loud" the signal is in the console. The knob above the ST1 is for the XLR input gain... you do not need to use that knob.

    Hi just a question, why you did not use the 2-track in for the MP3 playback, as this would be stereo instead of chan 15 mono, no?

  • @stageleftaudio
    @stageleftaudio2 күн бұрын

    Good question. The sound system is setup for mono, therefore a stereo "image" would not have been possible. Also, most all of the time, we use a channel input for playback music... this allows ease of control of the MP3 player (we treat it as an instrument), and also allows for that input to be easily routed to any of the monitor channels.

    I use passive speakers almost exclusively. The main reason is that I do a lot of events where I have to distribute sound in a lot of difderent ways, often over considerable distances. Running signal and power in many of these events if far more complex to work out than just running speaker cable. I use QSC PLX II amps, and I package them individually in their own cases, which stack if I need them to be together, or can be distributed around an event space, as needed. I've also found that most powered speaker models get discontinued pretty quickly, so replacement parts can dry up sometimes. I try to stick with gear that will be basically the same, and will be around for years and years. Going passive also allows me to chain things together. I can go down to 2 ohms in certain configurations...which means I can run up to 6 speakers on one two channel amp. Thats one power source, and one or maybe two signal sources. I also do things like use one NL8 cable that fans out into 4 NL4 connectors... so I can run one cable for a distance, and then hit 4 cabinets, and chain to another 4 cabinets...and still maintain a 4 ohm load on each amp channel. I build a variety of cabling rigs with that kind of thinking in mind. I carry a lot less cabling this way. I am not a fan of individual cable runs going all over the place, and neither are my clients. I've lost clients and then gained them back, because the powered speaker guy they switched to had cabling going all over the place, popped circuits, etc.... I keep a few powered speakers around, but dont use them for anything too serious. I might use them as backstage hot spots for a corporate gig, maybe a DJ monitor, a shout speaker for a band talkback, or something like that...but thats about it. I've got passive cabinets that Ive had for 30 years, and they still make money. I dont foresee the powered speaker providing that kind of service.

    Each channel of the gate connects to a separate input on the console. The console has an input on it called "INSERT". This is where the gate is connected. Amazing sound, clarity is phenomenal, do you have any tips for mixing a bass drum that is sealed and not ported?

  • @stageleftaudio
    @stageleftaudio15 күн бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. The best way to handle a non-ported bass drum is to mic it on the peddle side. You will get the "slap" of the beater hitting the drum along with the low frequency of the drum. I normally mic bass drums (including ported) in this manner if there is room to place the mic. Just make sure the mic is pointed directly at the area where the beater strikes the drum. Mixing the bass drum becomes a lot easier with good mic placement.

    I am planning to by 2 stage boxes and 3 Earmix systems. Do I have to get a avb network switch or can I just daisy chain everything

  • @stageleftaudio
    @stageleftaudio18 күн бұрын

    Everything can be daisy-chained, however, the "hops" (more is not good) in the network, will result in more latency of the signal, which can be a bad thing if running IE monitors. Connecting the Earmix systems to the switch will greatly reduce latency and may even simplify the setup.

    How many rack spaces to the Stage box take up. Also what gauge are your cables. They are thick

  • @stageleftaudio
    @stageleftaudio18 күн бұрын

    The 16.8 uses a 4U space. The Ethercon cables are Cat-6a; the cable structure is considered "tactical", which makes them thick. The tactical style of the cable is due to the jacketing; these are very robust compared to non-tactical cable.

  • @stageleftaudio

    If the faders are not moving by themselves, when they should be moving, it probably could be the motor that drives that fader. It's unfortunate, but ALL consoles that have motorized faders, will eventually need a replacement of the motors. If the faders are not moving when you try to move them manually (this is highly unlikely), there could be something under the mixing surface that is stopping the faders from moving.

    The "SL" stickers are 2" vinyl; I don't recall where I got those (it was online). I ordered several sheets of "S" and "L" and put them together. For the "Allen & Heath" black/white sticker, this is just a 3/4" (white on black) thermal label printed from a Dymo label maker. All of the labels I use on my cases are low-cost (easily replaceable) solutions. It's cheaper to do this than pay for custom lettering/images. Much of the lettering on the cases gets torn up; it's easy to replace the damaged lettering with "over the counter" solutions.

    Bob, did you record the band with a SSD drive through ST3? How was the quality?

  • @stageleftaudio
    @stageleftaudio19 күн бұрын

    Yes, I did record the band (at their request), however, I used a (USB) HDD for the recording. After some testing (and research) with SSD devices, they do not work well (they work, but there's far too many errors with the recordings). The problem with SSD is there's no cache. Whereas, HDD devices have caching, which greatly helps with streaming inputs onto the device. I tested various SSD devices with the console; all had excessive errors. SSD is convenient, but is not a good recording medium for the QU mixer. The HDD I used in the video is a 1TB USB 2.0 drive (I bought in 2012). It has recorded several shows. The recording quality seems very good. Like any recording, the gain needs to be set appropriately. I gave the recordings to the band for them to do their own mix-down. For contrast, the Presonus consoles I have all use 32G SD cards; they too produce great recordings, however, any caching taking place is managed by the console (not the recording medium). Hope this helps!

The QU is a great desk which I bought new in 2014 and only sold a couple of years ago as I had moved full time over to the QU-SB. I always used an iPad with the QU-16 inside or out as it was easier to see some of the gate/comp and EQ settings instead of looking at the small onboard screen.
