Using the FX3 and FX4 effects processors on an A&H qu-16 console

How to setup the FX3 and FX4 effects on the A&H QU-16. The setup of these effects is a little different, but the results are actually pretty good. In this video, I reference the order of the methods (in my professional opinion) which should be used.

I have been using a QU-16 for many years but have never used FX3 or FX4. This was really useful to see the possibilities. Thank you for taking the time to do this 👍

A few years back, I tried using FX 3 and routing it to one vocal channel as an insert. The effect I was using was the ADT Doubler, as one particular song the band sang was recorded that way back in the 60s. Unfortunately, even with FX 3 muted when not in use, there was crosstalk between the channels, resulting in a metallic sound being heard when speaking. This wasn't very pleasant, so I decided to scrap that idea and just stick with using reverb. I may revisit that and try both the channel and mix return to see if that stops any crosstalk from happening.

Using effects (other than a compressor or gate) as an insert usually will not sound good. I used the ADT to show how an insert would work... try using a compressor or gate in an insert. This should have better results.

Good eye! I keep the film on there to help protect the screen from the occasional drop of something... like a pen.

Great Vid! So I need a new Mixer asap and I am Interested in both Allen&Heath QU16 and CQ18T for I have heard great things about the effects. I play in a 3 piece band (2 acoustic guitars, Elec bass, 2 mics lead/harmony) and occasionally drums. What do you recommend me investing in, in 2024? I guess my concern is if the QU is worth it seeing as it is dated. Thanks for your time!

Thanks for your comment! I can only speak for the QU16... it has been a great small console and is easy to use. The QU16 is dated, however, ALL consoles are tools and some tools may work better for some situations than others. We use all physical consoles for our services, no iPad mixing. Physical consoles are faster (and usually) more efficient to use than an iPad. I can't really say how well a CQ18T would work for you. When considering a console, look more at the work-flow of the console and what it offers for mixing (inputs, outputs for aux, matrix, FOH, recording, etc...). The effects engines in the QU16 are good, though, we only use reverb and occasionally delay.

@@stageleftaudio Truly appreciate your sincere insight man! Given your experience I trust what you are saying, I also am used to physical controls. I Really like the mixer just didn’t want to end up getting something that won’t last me but I’ll take your word for it!

Glad it helped! If you want to stick with small format consoles, take a look at the A&H SQ. It's the next level up from the QU. It may give you more of what you are looking for.

So I'll just throw in a contrary opinion here... been working extensively with a Qu-16 at a venue, and personally, in 2024, I would NOT buy one for myself. The fact that it is 10 (ish) years old now for me is problematic. If you check the release notes on the latest firmware, you see that the release is to accommodate electronic components that are no longer available and had to be changed in the circuit design. And while we all hope that our purchases will perform flawlessly for many years, what this tells me (as an electronics engineer) is that repair parts could become an issue in the near future. Additionally, on the A&H forums, they have stated that the remote access of the Qu family is going to remain iPad only (Qu-Pad). No Android or PC options like the SQ and CQ families have. For me, that's a deal breaker, and also signifies that A&H's commitment to this board is waning... as you would expect after 10 years. At this price point & surface size, I'd be taking a hard look at the brand new Yamaha DM3, which is going to have a lot more processing power, and 10+ years of additional research on making effects sound more natural & less digital.
