How to mix the band - Gain Staging - basic channel setup for a band Part 1 - Allen & Heath QU series

Today I’m starting an introductory series using the qu32 to run FOH for a band. We’ll start by talking about stage plot and input list docs. Then some setup functions on the mixer to use a prerecorded multitrack project as the input for a virtual sound check. In this first episode I’ll focus on “gain staging” - the processes of getting each input channel to peak at or near 0db and the reason that’s important.
Here’s a link where you can download this and many more multi track recordings for virtual sound checks.

After I set one of the channel as Shure Beta 58 from the library, and then I set my guitar as line in from the library but this will change my shure beta 58 to line in as well. i check the rest of all 16 channels, and they're all set to line in as well. • @ross102591

    Hey Rob, can you please clarify the difference between gain unity and fader unity? I noticed in this video you are initially setting all gains to 0 (Noon position) within the super strip/touchscreen and then adjusting from there. However I'm not seeing that you are addressing the faders and their positioning as it specifically relates to gain structure & headroom. Do they not have a relationship that needs to be considered when doing the initial set up/structuring? From many of the other videos that I have seen, the recommendation is to set all faders to unity and then adjust the gain so that incoming levels are at roughly -18dB to a max of zero as to avoid clipping and distortion of course. I did watch your part two as when you are mixing the track by Avalon you are using the faders to make adjustments. As you start to make those adjustments, you can see that most of your channel faders are at roughly -10 (below unity). As faders are logarithmic, I believe there is a heavy importance on the faders being set to unity for proper fader resolution and more finite adjustments. I recently heard the analogy that gain is like the water main that comes into the house and faders are like the faucet on the bathtub which I thought was good for the layman. I'm on a Qu-24 by the way. Great videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge Rob!

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    Hi Ross. Technically Gain does not have a unity setting. In the video, gains are not set to Noon, but are adjusted for each incoming channel signal to get that signal to peak at about the zero mark on the meters. This means gain settings will be completely diff for each input. Faders are used to adjust the “output” of each channel, and that process would be referred to as mixing. See my follow up video on mixing outputs once the input gains are set. Since I was setting the input gains based on the meters, I could have technically shut down all channel faders and completed the process with no sound at all. I only brought the faders up to a minimum just to have some sound for reference. Yes I’ve seen the “faders all to unity and then adjust gains” method (basically the opposite of my preferred method. I won’t argue with someone if they choose that method, I just don’t understand how it makes sense to set output volume levels using the input gain control. To use your water analogy, that’s like turning on the bathtub faucet, then running to the basement to adjust the water main to adjust how fast the bathtub is filling up. Doesn’t make sense.

    Fader position during mixing can actually have many factors. In the case of that mixing video, I had studio monitors set fairly loudly, plus I only wanted the track to be background noise so I wasn’t yelling as I was narrating. Of course a closer overall setting nearer to 0/unity would be ideal, but there are lots of other things to consider. I could run all the channel faders up IF I turned down the master fader to get the same overall volume level. I could also adjust the output levels of the amps powering the speakers etc etc. Lots of other factors in the signal chain

Then rename you wav files and replace the test files created by the test recording. See how far you get….

    Hi, I heard two approach to gain staging, one like yours, where the instruments are peaking ideally at 0 dB meter. But there’s other approach I heard just keeping it low to about negative 10dB in peak meter. Is there pros and cons with these? I like the 0 actually because it is easier visually- 0 label is readable. But why would others would use -10dB? Thanks

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    The diff of numbers (0 or -10 or -18) is due to diff scales. Old analog boards used to use VU meters - the moving needle like a speedometer. Those meters used 0 as the unity position. Digital setups like recording software uses a diff meter, where 0 is the top or maximum value of the scale, and therefore a unity value is technically -18. Some would argue that number is too low and should be -10. So the diff is based on the meter that’s being used.

    @@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thanks! May I know, in your experience for live band, which gain stage value worked best? I just mixed a live music weeks ago and tried gain staging peaking near -3 to -6db max. The sound is so weak, musicians told me they don’t feel the music power in stage. I noticed that also, I don’t feel it especially the drums, kick and all so weak.. but I didn’t adjust anymore because i followed the science of peak meter max at -6db. What do you do in situations like that? should one just trust the ears instead as long as it feels right?. The venue is also a struggle because it’s a big hall, band only 5 members, FOH speaker to sound guy distance about 20-30M.

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @@onzkicg Thx for the question. Proper gain staging should allow the overall sound to be as loud as the system will allow. It’s possible that the sound system is simple under powered for the music you are trying to produce. If musicians on stage are complaining about “not feeling the power” that sounds like a low volume issue and not about gain staging. Make sure you have sufficient power amps to correctly drive the speakers you are using.

Essentially track one running through the processing of the board and then out mix one and so on and so forth for each channel. Select mix 2 and bring up the fader for channel 2. Repeat for 3 and 4. The trick will be the stereo mixes. Select mix5-6 then bring up channels 5 and 6 but be sure to PAN 5 fully left and PAN 6 fully right. Thus will give you ch5 only one output jack 5 and ch6 only on output jack 6. Repeat for 7-8 and 9-10. Hope I’ve understood your question correctly.

    Thx Aron and great question. The channel volume does NOT matter when setting the gain in my example here. Gain is the adjustment of the input(incoming) signal for the channel while the fader is the volume(outgoing) signal for that channel. In theory they can be completely separate, so yes you could set gain levels with the ch volume fully down. In reality however the process is a bit more dynamic and I tend to adjust both in tandem. With one eye on the gain LED signal as I adjust the gain, and the other giving that signal at least “some” level of output/volume signal. I usually find that musicians on stage don’t think I’m doing anything if they cant actually “hear” a signal. With some practice you can do both fairly smoothly.

    Hey! I've got a question. In my church we´ve got in ears. So if im singing and i want less piano in my ear I ask the sound desk team "On mix 1 can you lower the piano". Now, if i want to make Mix 9-10 what the livestream ears, what connection do I make between the desk and the laptop? And once that connection is made how do I select Mix 9-10 as what I want the livestream to hear? Don't know if that was confusing but hope you can help :)

    Sorry but using presets is still on my “to-do” list. Haven’t got to that one yet. you should be able to select a single channel then choose the library preset. and then move on to the next. You can only “select” one channel at a time so not sure how choosing a preset would even apply to multiple channels. Just think if you are actually pressing Recall after choosing the preset from the list

    Thanks for your quick response. I found that if I hit recall after choosing the preset from library, then the all setting in PEQ will be the same, but If I don't hit recall, they will have different PEQ setting as my input, however all channels' is named the same, so I don't know whether that is say "Drum" as I preset or something eles.@@soundadvicewithrob3083

    Thx for the question Roshan. I assume you are referring to recording on the qdrive port (18 channels) since the rear USB for recording to a computer (DAW) will record all 32 ch. Yes, you can choose which 18 ch to record out of 32. On the qu32. Choose the Output Patch tab, then the USB Audio tab. Tap each of the 18 USB channels, then once highlighted, use the rotation knob to select which channel to record on that USB channel.

    Hi Tony. Sounds like you are trying to record using the qdrive port on top of the board. Unfortunately the qdrive software is limited to 18ch recording. Typically 1-16 plus L&R (which can be reassigned). This is the same on the qu16 and qu24 btw. The only way to record all 32ch or 22ch in your case is to use the USB port on the back of the board but that must be connected to a DAW software on a computer. I can show you how to reassign LR to 17-18 if that’s what you want but it won’t get you 22ch

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    Thx for the question Glen. Just to be clear, a DCA is a fader remote control and doesn’t involve any audio. Not sure what you’re seeing to think that a DCA is “peaking”. If perhaps you mean a group (subgroup) which does process the audio of the assigned channels, then you need to adjust the input gain of each of the individual channels assigned (the drums in your case).

    Hi Brian . Thx for watching. Certainly the more info you can the band to provide the better. In our case for a festival-style event we always provide a default set of AC drops across the back and front of the stage. As well we also have a fairly good compliment of wedges around stage that we can position as needed. Not the end of the world if that info is missing, but again the more the better. In many cases we either don’t get one at all, or when the artist actually arrives they chuckle and say “oh yea, that’s a really old version of our setup”. LOL

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    If you are refering to the PFL scale yes the AH QU desks use the dBu scale. You can identify it by the fact that 0 appears about 3/4 of the way up the scale and the highest reading on the meter is usually 12 or 18dBu. For anyone else reading this reply, the alternate is the dbfs (full scale) in which case 0 appears at the top limit of the meters and the same location at about 3/4 of the way up the meter is -18dBfs. Many digital boards have adopted the dBfs scale while AH have chosen to retain the dBu scale meters.
