    NOW (!!!!) I have recognized the mistake I did years ago by assigning some inputs to a group and not un-assigning them in the LR. I was getting the typical phaser-like effect. I was able to solve this only by resetting the entire mix. *slapping my forehead* EXCELLENT LESSON! Thank you Rob!

    Wow! I’m so glad i could help. You are absolutely right... that phaser-effect sounds is a tell-tale sign of two sound sources creating a conflict. Thx for sharing your success, i appreciate hearing it!

    @8:26 you turn off the Mix Sends Group 3-4 to L/R mains. By doing this and leaving the 1-8 channels selected on the L/R mains (vs deselecting them) will you get the same sound versus having it go twice through the L/R? I could then use Group 3-4 for sending to a monitor channel? Is there a better way to do this versus sending each drum to a monitor channel or am I on the right track with grouping them?

    Thx. Glad to hear you found the info helpful. If I understand your question correctly, the short answer is yes. When you send channels to a group as post-fader then you are affecting the overall signal of that group. If that group is then routed to several mixes, any change you make using the original channels of the groups will be heard everywhere that group is sent.

    Hey rob, I recently come across your channel after buying a Qu-Pac and almost sending it back as I didn't get on with it at first, but after watching your videos I have really got into it, and I really love it now. Just a question regarding this group/mix option. Suppose I wanted to take group 1-2 and have it as a mix for an extra stereo monitor send, I assume I would need a AR24 (or similar) if all my physical outs are used up? Or suppose mono mix 3 and 4 aren't being used, I couldn't send this new stereo mix to those outs right? Could Alt Stereo out be used? I am still learning about the Qu-Pac so apologies if this is obvious.

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thx Stephen and great news on your success with the qu pac. All the qu series are great gear that offer lots of options. To your question…yes, if all your mix outputs are in use you will need an expander to access group outputs regardless of those being a group or a mix. As you note the qu pac does not have physical group outputs. If mix3-4 are not used, you should be able to re-route the group output to those physical outputs. It “may” be possible to use Alt but you would need to confirm that the group output can be routed there.

    @@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thought so. I'll set it up tomorrow and have look into putting group 1/2, or 3/4 into Alt or the mono mix out 3-4... It's no big deal really, as with the band I use the Qu-Pac for we're actually not even getting close to using all outs.. I still have plenty without. But I am thinking if I was in a situation with a bunch of extra muso who had their one IEMS systems, or I wanted to feed a house system as well as ours. The big thing that sold me on this desk when I eventually took it on a gig, compared to what I had (X18) was the sound difference. It was night and day!

    I can in fact send any of the 4 groups into Alt Stereo out. So if it was set as Mix, that would give me a 4th stereo aux monitor mix. But if sent to mix 2 and 3 they would be mono still? Would there be a way to send the left side of group 1 and 2 for example (if set to mix) to mono out 3 and the right side to aux 4 thus giving me a stereo mix on 3 and 4? Hi Rob, I hope you’re doing great. Thanks for the tutorial. I’m using a similar setup. Live House L/R, and there’s other group/mix that goes to live stream. I am listening to this online livestream simultaneously (once in a while to check how it sounds in KZread) while doing the house mix. I noticed that in one of the microphone channel, in the main house mix (auditorium), the mic fader is way below the unity 0- actually near that label -20b . That’s the sweet spot, and it sounded okay, loud enough and prone to feedback once I bump it further. But in streaming mix output, I have to raise the level up to be heard in youtube properly, fader reached the maximum already, reached the topmost fader position. That level gap of fader for stream mix as compared to live house L/R mix is just a lot. How is this channel or mic like this? What am I missing? My gain staging is properly done, peaking zero at meter. Thanks!

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    Since you have set gain staging correctly, your description sounds like you have to boost the mix level for the channel because the LR fader for that channel is set low. This would indicate that the the mix is set as post fader and should be set as prefader. I do have another video on Pre and Post settings.

    Great question Tobi. The funtion you are looking for is called “linking”. Press sel for ch1, then choose the Processing screen. In the first tab for the channel name etc you should see a button “Not Linked CH1-2”. This is telling you that channel 1 and 2 are not linked. Press this button to link CH 1 and 2. NOTE: the first ch in any linked pair is always the ODD number. Eg. You can link ch1+2 or ch3+4 but you cannot link ch2+3. Hope this helps

    So, let's say i have my main faders sending to L/R, and i also have those same faders assigned to a group and that group of course is sending back to L/R. What kind of issues would i hear? Also, assuming the same setup, is the PEQ for each channel completely separate for the main fader and the group fader? I'm wondering if it's possible to run two different eq's in this setup simultaneously... and yes, i'm aware that would be a total nightmare. OR is this scenario only allow one PEQ per channel, no matter if it's in a group or not? Kinda wondering how all that plays together (whether it be PEQ, gates, duckers, etc,).

    Sorry but in the QU series you cannot run an output (eg. LR or a mix) into a group. Groups are for inputs only. You can however assign outputs to a matrix, (just not on a QU16 - all others have matrix)

    @@soundadvicewithrob3083 I didn't phrase my question correctly, and I apologize. Watching your video, starting at 4:42 and going through to about 6:45, you talk about assigning channels to groups, and mention that it's important to go back to your main L/R mix and UNassign those channels from the main mix... otherwise you'll send audio from the main mix to L/R and ALSO send audio from your subgroup to the L/R (essentially, two sets of audio). My first question is... if i did that, what would the band sound like coming from the PA? Would there be phase cancellation? Maybe just a little 'doubling' sound? My second question - Let's say i did not UNassign those channels like i'm supposed to. If i make changes to the PEQ on a channel in the subgroup, will those same changes appear on the channel in the main mix? Kinda wondering if your subgroup channels get their own PEQ (and other effects) completely separate from the main inputs.

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    10 ай бұрын

    Yes you “could” hear a slight doubling effect or maybe a chorusing effect depending on the timing of the signals. Yes you “could” get phase cancellation which can manifest as several different “effects”. What’s more likely is that you reduce the levels of the “group” but hear almost no difference because the channel input is also being fed to LR…that can be quite confusing in the heat of a live show. Q2: Yes. PEQ is a single process on each channel. There are no seperate EQ’s per channel for each output…jus the one. Any change is heard everywhere.

    Aloha from Hawaii! So just a question.. Is there a way to send a Mix to a Group, then the Group to a Matrix. We are trying to level out our livestream/broadcast audio. We were planning to put vocals in one group, and instruments in another group. Our hopes was to be able to adjust an entire group-mix level by raise all vocals or lowering all instruments all together. We’re currently going from Mix 5-6, out to a Matrix 1-2, which goes out to our live. My assumption is that I would set the Group to a Post mix? That way, the adjustments we are making in Mix 5-6, will also adjust in the Group; which the Group will send to Matrix 1-2? Essentially we want to go Mix 5-6 > Groups 1-2 (vocals) & 3-4 (instruments) > Matrix If there is a better method, I’m all ears (pun intended).

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    Thx for the question. Unfortunately the QU series does not allow sending an output to another output - so you cant send a mix to a group. You can however send a group to a matrix no problem. If you just want the ability to control all vocals or all instruments then a DCA would accomplish that

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    2 жыл бұрын

    You could assign all vocals to a group and all instruments to another group, then assign both those groups to a single matrix. The matrix would give you a single master fader for both groups. The group master would retain control over all vocals or all instruments

  • @kainoaliu

    Thank you for the reply!! I was thinking about using DCA, but then I realize that it wouldn’t allow me to add Compression. I’m even thinking of utilizing three(3) Groups: • Drums/Cajon • Keys/Guitar/Bass • Vocals I definitely pan most vocals and instruments to create that stereo feel for our livestream. My thought process was, Compress individual channels(if needed), then be able to Compress each Group, then to send the mix to a Matrix for the last output (and slightly compressing if needed). Soo, in that case. Would I just mix the audio from each individual Group, and just send the mix straight to the Matrix? Thus skipping the use of Mix 5-6?

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    2 жыл бұрын

    Quite right. DCA is a fader remote control only so no audio to process (like compression etc). To use compression you do need to use a group. If you have a qu32 then you have several groups to use. A group doesnt give you individual channel control just one single audio signal combining all channels assigned to the group. (Sidenote, groups can be converted to mixes if you want to create a separate mix). Your 3 groups can then be assigned to matrix for a master control. No need for Mix5-6 unless as I said, you specifically wanted create a completely seperate mix.

    Technically yes. Add compression to the subgroup. Just remember, if you first add compression to any actual drum channel you will be doubling up. It can be tricky and not as straight forward as some board that provide an actual parr compressor. That’s why I say “technically”

    Yes you must assign LR to the matrix you choose to use. Be sure to unassigned any other outputs to that matrix so it’s only LR. Control will follow LR as long as you assign it as post fader. (I do have another video that details pre and post fader)
