Allen & Heath CQ Series Feedback Assistant - How To Use

Here's a quick video I made with my Allen & Heath CQ-18T showing how you can use the Feedback Assistant to eliminate feedback from your monitors and main PA.
Each box on the left represents one of the 16 total filters.
Blue - Fixed mode filters.
Green - Live mode filters.
Orange - Currently selected filter.
Touch a box or a point on the graph to select a filter for adjustment.
Adjust Filter - Make width and cut adjustments to the selected filter. Select ‘Reset’ to remove the filter and make it available for use by the detector.
All Filters - Adjust width and cut for all active filters at once.
To reset all filters, use the reset option from the dropdown menu at the top right of the screen.
Filter Modes
Fixed filters remain in place until they are manually deleted, the FBA is completely reset, or if the Feedback Assistant ‘steals’ them. Up to 12 of the 16 filters can be in Fixed mode, always leaving 4 for use in Live mode.
Live filters recover over time and once fully recovered, will switch back to being unused filters. They can be deleted individually or with a complete FBA reset. All of the 16 filters can be used in Live mode.
Automatic re-use of filters
When all filters are already in use, but a new feedback frequency is detected, the Feedback Assistant can re-use or ‘steal’ an existing filter, using logic to decide the best possible outcome i.e. the least amount of feedback.
Note that Live mode filters can only steal other filters already in live mode and Fixed mode filters can steal any filters.
On power up
Every time the CQ is booted, all Feedback Assistant instances are set to a ‘pre- show’ state. Fixed filters, the Live Recovery setting, ‘All Filters’ settings and In/Out state are remembered from last power down. Any Live filters will have been removed. Detect Hold is active. Mode is set to ‘Fixed’.
Copy/Paste
Copying and pasting includes all filters and settings (e.g. Live Recovery). This means that when pasting to another output (or back to the same output), the state of the FBA will be exactly the same.
Store/Recall
When using the FBA Library, Live filters are not stored or recalled. All Fixed filters, the Live Recovery setting, ‘All Filters’ settings and the In/Out state are stored and can be recalled.
Scene changes
Scene changes do not affect the Feedback Assistant settings directly, but they will usually change levels and processing which might affect which frequencies are more likely to feed back.

I wish that there were instructions with this model that start at the "on" switch and end at a decent mix. Most of the videos on this are more of a advertisement than they are instructional....but I'm not giving up. Yours are, so far, the most informative that I've found yet. Keep up the good work!

There is a download manual on Allen and heath website you can print that goes over everything this board can do

I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. Allen and Heath need to pay you. I realize this is an “easy” mixer, but I haven’t messed with a mixer in over 10 years… a lot has changed. I fried my brain trying to learn it with their manual. I was gonna return it for something basic, but I like the features. I’m keeping it because of your videos. Thank you!

Keep with it. Digital mixers are confusing, but this is by far the easiest one I've been around. Happy mixing.

I wish it was automated to replace removed frequencies. when they're no longer an issue Ex: for a performer moving around on stage that may get a little feedback pending on where they're standing, but then moves... But the mic still sounded good with the issue frequencies removed... #Salute

They are automated. Use live mode like he shows at 5:30.

I just got this one and having issues with the Bluetooth. It connects perfectly fine but after I’m playing music for about half way through the song it starts cutting out
Great video, thank you! I just purchased a CQ12t but for some reason when I reset the filters using the iPad app, the CQ12 will glitch and stop playing audio. I have to restart the unit or load my Custom made scene again. Has this happened to anyone else?
I have a QU16 that allows limiting access to functions based on login. Admin can do everything, I can limit a non-admin login to just the main faders, for example. Do the CQ series have the same feature?
Can u make a video of how to save a show, I’m coming from QSC where I always had my bands set up saved to a USB as a backup. From what I understand u can’t save scenes but u can save a show…
Howdy Jaylon, I have the CQ12t and can't find the FBA in it and also can't load the firmware update, any suggestions?
I will Connect it with my Digitakt and Syntakt. Did the CQ18T Recognize the incoming channels (Tracks) from Digitakt and can i Edit the individually Tracks. Thanks for help and sorry for my Bad englisch

Top you have a video on recording and playback from the SD card? The "manual" is very basic. I know they are trying not to have a big learning curve, however, there is not even one word about Gain or input levels under "Recording." Is there a way to message you?
I just got the cq20B and only managed to play around with it for the first time in rehearsal tonight. I use IEMs and usually just have them dry but I'm trying to figure out how to have a little of the FX that are being used on the drums and vox in the IEM. Tried to do it this evening and couldn't seem to get it to come through. Any advice?

On the processing screen, go to ST. Inputs/FX at the top. Then select Fx1 (right under that), Then hit "sends" at the bottom of FX1 - and adjust what output you want the FX to go to. That should do it.
Can i get some serious answers about FBA. As i know its impossible to not hear feedback in order to FBA do his job. Any opinion what is better to use for live performance Fixed or Live mode? It make some sense for me for "fixed mode" because in live mode limits are removing automatically to old state.
If I wanted to plug my iPad into a channel to play music instead of Bluetooth can I do that? Thank you for your videos it’s really helpful I might be buying this.

Yes you can. If your iPad has a headphone jack, then you could simply use a 3.5 mm connector to a pair of dual quarter inch and just go in through the stereo channel.

I just learned how to play mixer. Can you show me how. Adjust PEQ to sing karaoke or not
How do I use the FBA on individual floor monitors? BTW, I'm an old school guy, new to the digital mixing world.

The same way. You can see that I went to the processing screen and selected the main output and then tapped on its FBA. For an aux mix you would go that aux output and then click on that aux’s FBA.

Hot the hamburger menu top right and select reset. This will put a reset button on anything you can reset. This will clear everything at once on feedback assistant or other filters etc
Does it only apply to outputs ? Or can it apply to channels also ? Id like it to change the mic settings not the master l&r

I think you will get a lot of praise from the singer when the singer hears his sound. 😅😁
Is there a way to bypass specific channels from the FBA filters? Say if you have only the room PA at a wedding and you set your filters with the FBA, can you bypass the stereo input, bluetooth, or any other non microphone channel so only the microphones are filtered and music is not affected?

It looks like you can run the FBA on individual channels as well as mix.
