    hey slick you got time to check a tune file for me? I'm having issues with it. (cant see the forest thru the trees situation)Its something i had to pick up out of necessity i had a company that was supposed to help me remote tune it after i rebuilt the top end and paid them for it but ran into issues. Its an LSJ wih a P12 well half way through the tune and the guy that tuned ecotecs quit or got fired irregardless he no longer works there and I got left swinging in the wind. This was in February so since i tried getting ahold of a few dynoshops around here noone wants to touch it. It's a compound boosted LSJ 2.0L Ecotec. It has a highly modified top end, modded factory M62 blower and a GT35 hanging out out back and air is ran through 2 intercoolers. I run about 40#'s through the top end luckily it has good ring seal. i've been left to my own devices figured out how he was tunning VE(thanks to your videos) and finished tuning the VE Table. but cant get the MAF re-engaged. It wont reed hz so i'm thinking thinking the computer is stopping it from reading because i am still pickingup hz readings at 1500rpm but nothing above it. I've also found that the P12 isnt a bad factory ecm since it has boost built into it but its mising a bunch of tables like cold idle isn't there as an example compared to the early LS P01 or P59. f you could shoot me an email its under my about ab on my channel shoot me an email with your number and i'll give ya a holler i gotta ge this thing tuned i know it something plain as day and its right in front of my face and cant see it. thanks man. feel free to delete this. i fugured this messsage might get your attn going back this far.

    Very Good Vid! Question Working on a swap vehicle with out Wideband need to get it running okay enough to work out all bugs before dyno, Has no MAF, I'm trying to get fuel trims close enough to run on its own. Need to use VE Tuning using STFT/LTFT, in the description you said " The processes shown in this video can be modified and used to tune VE with STFT's simply by turning them on and then plotting them on the same AFR error table instead of the WB input which is shown in the video." Can you Help me understand that little better?

  • @ChopperDoc181
    @ChopperDoc1812 ай бұрын

    Yes, all you have to do is build a table using your VE, as shown, and then just plot the STFT’s. Nothing more. The STFT’s are already corrections. That’s what they are. How much the PCM is correcting according to your NB O2’s. For GM I just use STFT’s by themselves and leave LTFT’s disabled. I do this after wideband tuning anyway because if they are on it will anyway. Some do LTFT + STFT / 2 as well. That’s more something I’ve done on Fords because they’re just weird. I’ve found STFT alone on GM is just fine and gets it plenty close. Don’t forget though, if you punch it, or otherwise enter PE, STFT’s are disabled, and you’ll be blind. I don’t recommend that method. In the low RPM areas STFT’s are perfectly fine to use to tune, and is also one of the last things I do on street tunes, like I said, since the PCM is going to use them anyway. So I adjust the VE after WB tuning so it’s closer to what the STFT’s (narrowbands) are actually reading and not the wideband that I’m going to remove anyway. Does that make sense?

    Oh, I watched part 2 first, thought you were scaling for a custom engine, like a stroker kit or something. But you're doing like I thought after hearing about some guy's custom OS goofiness. Lie and say your engine and injectors are half actual size, and there you go, 2.4 grams per cylinder limit.

  • @Marc_Wolfe
    @Marc_Wolfe2 ай бұрын

    I'm glad I'm not trying to do any electronic idle control. Prime pulse on mine is just zeroed out, stock. I guess that's an option, or it uses a per 90 degree table that starts high then slopes down quickly.

  • @Marc_Wolfe
    @Marc_Wolfe2 ай бұрын

    Change cylinder volume in the PCM, by a lot, then look at the VE again. If it looks the same while displaying in percentage, your tuning software is accounting for that, not the ECU.

  • @ChopperDoc181
    @ChopperDoc1812 ай бұрын

    There are many formulas and tables in the PCM we don’t see at all. This is just showing the simplified version of what the PCM is accounting for, what I would call “theory” because there are a lot of things that do not translate directly from the mathematical theory. The ideal gas law is the law it is referencing. Whether or not this is actually what the PCM is using is another story. Also, when you adjust the volume, HPT automatically changes the VE iirc. So yes, it does compensate for this.

  • @Marc_Wolfe
    @Marc_Wolfe2 ай бұрын

    @@ChopperDoc181 It being HPTuners, compensates, not the ECU. I'm over hear not paying that extorsion price, trying to use a P59 with Universal Patcher as a super cheap Microsquirt alternative. Already got it running a CB450, with a very hamfisted approach. I thought "oh boy, it says GM Gen III, I'll get specific info instead of theory" then I realized I thought wrong...

  • @Marc_Wolfe
    @Marc_Wolfe2 ай бұрын

    I said the hell with it and backwards mathed the percentage close to stock 222 is 37 of 600. Multiplied entire table by .37. Which changed hardcoded numbers by the same. That's probably fine, but I was hoping to validate that. Oh well. Now I'll see if my IAT reading is close to accurate while it runs happily. I have a potentiometer in place of IAT to make it easy to see what direction I need to go with tune, since i don't own a wideband.

  • @ChopperDoc181
    @ChopperDoc1812 ай бұрын

    The Gen III’s supposedly do in fact use PV=nRT, but, there are adders, and other factors like you said the software makes up for. It would be a wise assumption that changing the VE in HPT is probably changing more than that in the PCM. I don’t know that for certain, but I do know we don’t see all the tables the PCM uses. This is especially true on Gen IV’s. The editor definitely changes many, many tables with a keystroke. So you’re right, this is not that in depth down to the code used for each input and calculation. My apologies for that. Sorry it’s not helpful to your project.

    So when I log my iac control position it’s stuck on 310 but the iac control desired position fluctuates as rpm’s raise and lower. So I’m getting no data populating. Is it safe to say my iac has failed? And would that create a surging effect at low idle. I had to raise my idle to 625 just to keep engine from surging.

    First off I love the SMG Camaro you have. I had the same year till I sold it right before COVID.. regret it so much! Anyway, I just found your channel in the quest to tuning my boosted ‘81 SMG. My question is: What is the order of operations for tuning a stock turbocharged gen3 p59?

  • @ChopperDoc181
    @ChopperDoc1814 ай бұрын

    Sorry for the late reply. The order shouldn’t change. Personally I always do VE first, then MAF, the spark. Keep in mind though before tuning I go through and set up things like spark, fuel, and other key tables with respect to the mods that were done prior to turning the key. It’s especially important if you are tuning a blower. But yeah, once initial setup is complete I do it in the usual order mentioned above.

    My question is.... Is it necessary to adjust the IAC STEPS vs Effective area on a DBW-or drive by wire car? The graphs I set up for my DBC truck DO NOT WORK for DBW cars???? What gives? Is it not necessary to adjust the IAC Effective area on DBW vehicles? This has always puzzled me... Well this and BASE RUNNING AIRFLOW on DBW cars as well.. The RussK idle config does not work on DBW cars because there is no IAC so how do we verify that the throttle body flow area is correct? Or, am I over-thinking this stuff?

    Question; if my VE was spot on before doing this procedure why is it so off now? Do I need to redo my VE?

  • @ChopperDoc181
    @ChopperDoc1819 ай бұрын

    Yes, because the amount of air being calculated from the IAC table is having an effect. It shouldn’t require a lot of tweaking, and it should only effect a few cells at most at idle. Once out of idle routines VE should remain fairly accurate.

  • @Loucfr
    @Loucfr9 ай бұрын

    @@ChopperDoc181 The whole table isn’t supposed to be changed right? Just the cells mostly used from a cold start to a hot idle usually 40-200 or so? That may be where I went wrong. I adjusted the cells throughout the entire table. But my VE was drastically off after this procedure.

    Great video series man! Also not sure if you’re back overseas or not, but thank you for your service! I have a p59 gen III 6.0 drive by wire set up I’ve been fighting. It has a decent sized cam. I applied the 15 percent to the ve, but When I start it up it will run really rough and die. Unless I apply some pedal to keep it going, if I let off it dies. Once running some, all my values in my ve err are around -20. When I put it in gear it drops to about -10. It stumbles real hard, and I have to feather it to keep it alive(to much gas kills it too). Based on this, would I need to adjust more than just the ve and base rpm to keep get it drivable for a log? Also what is the order of operations the pcm uses to make its calculates? I feel dumb asking but I’m an old school engine builder/tuner, this is no simple adjustment job like I assumed it would be😂.

  • @dennisk8134
    @dennisk81349 ай бұрын

    Also I did watch the previous videos and saw the scaling, would I need to scale everything that uses gps to match the 15 percent change on the VE table? Or would I need to go more along the route of figuring out my max vacuum, and use that as a starting point. I’m scratching the rest of the hair off my head on this one. P.S. Thank you for the explanatory videos, and the help in advance.

    So is it safe to say if the guy I had tune my car didn’t mess with the idle screw to get idle counts down that he doesn’t know what he’s doing cause my car has an idle hang in between shifts as well as when I put in nuetral sometimes the car will drop down to 500 rpm’s then shoot back up to desired 975rpm my idle counts are at 160-180 warm and the car only seems to want to idk right with the a/c on. I’ve tried contacting the tuner multiple times but supposedly he’s the best in the world etc. he kept telling me vacuum leak but I’ve looked at everything and can’t find anything as well as spraying carb cleaner all around intake and still no fluctuation in idle so I’m wondering if I got screwed

  • @user-cj8pz2gp2m
    @user-cj8pz2gp2m10 ай бұрын

    I finally find why we got hanging idle, the issue is spark idle in gear, when you move it to park the overspeed idle spark take long time to start working, also the iac has already been added air when you in gear, so when go to park iac take long time to remove air maybe 2-6 seconds And overspeed also stat working late and he add more spark so we need to remove spark from 1200 and maybe 1600 rpm The factory iac valve has a slow degassing response And more idle spark will effect I should to adjust spark idle start from 400-1600 rpm gear and park Or 400-1200 with low spark timing gear and park

    Does the pcm use maf data when calculating dynamic airflow when its not being used? As in, if you have the maf failed and removed using a open loop speed density tune, does the tunes maf data still affect the way the pcm does airflow calculations?

  • @ChopperDoc181
    @ChopperDoc18110 ай бұрын

    No, it should not. However sometimes software softwares and errors are possible as always. From experiments, when one model is used as the sole source for airflow estimation, then the other model does not get calculated into dynamic. That said, sometimes on Gen III cars not unplugging the MAF on SD tunes can occasionally skew the data because of the PCM is a computer and computers aren’t always perfect. Sometimes they glitch out and read a line of code that shouldn’t be active. That’s why it’s often recommended to unplug the MAF completely when tuning the VE. Don’t do that on Gen IV or V though unless you have separated the IAT.

    Then use STFTs as the error. Plot them on your VE table as shown in the video. Just be advised, STFTs are disabled in PE, so you cannot tune WOT with STFTs. Even if they did work narrowbands are only accurate to within about 1 of stoich each way. So the ratio at WOT would be well outside of the NB accuracy range. Get a WB. You can get a decent one for around $150 or so. Some are more. I use an AEM 30 series. In the meantime yes you can tune with STFTs but again, only part throttle/cruise areas. Hope this helps.
