The rotor wash must provide enough airflow to keep the barrel cool. No 3-5 round bursts here, boys.

I think it's 3-5 second bursts you might be thinking of? We've all done WAY more than that both in the air and on the ground through the years, just saying lol. One range I remember we hooked 1500 round cans to 240's and had some fun. Left the belts in 750 chunks and changed the barrels every belt. Can't say it was good for the guns though lol. And yeah the airflow does cool it off a bit faster, but it's not really the rotor wash since we are above ETL.

@@ChopperDoc181 I'm not real familiar with choppers, I was attached to arty. Whats ETL? In the Corps, it was strict 3-5 round bursts. At least, when I was in. God help you if you melted a barrel.

@@idriwzrd Effective Transitional Lift. It's when a helicopter stops acting like a helicopter and more like an airplane. This means we are flying in clean air (turbulence free) as it passes through the rotor system only one time and is then chalk 2's problem if they want to ride our six. This effect occurs at approximately 24-30 knots, ish. So rotor wash isn't a huge factor at higher air speeds and is highly unlikely to prevail over the actual relative wind going over the gun, and the one you feel, though it does still affect some other things. Principally, deciding which seat is the "hurricane seat" which is in the back right because of counterclockwise blade rotation. In this video we are probably going around 90-100 knots or so, as per the usual at the range. Might be a bit faster, not sure honestly. It was a long long time ago in a desert far away.

@@ChopperDoc181 Rotary wing dynamics are so fascinating. I should've re-uped into the ARMY to become a WO and fly.
