This channel is where we share our experiences, information and tips for kayaking in our local area and when we get somewhere more exotic. There is naturally a lot around the Solent though also includes other interesting trips we make much further away such as South America, Iceland and Europe.
I freely share tips and tricks as we go with the primary aim always to have fun along the way while exploring new places and trying new things and new kit.
If you wish to help support the channel, there is the link below to treat us to a coffee. In reality of course, the costs to run the channel include the obvious camera and kayaking gear as well as editing software and when possible, music licenses.
Many thanks to all who take part even by just subscribing is a big help

Hi. They are also open sea kayaks.
@@poppetrurazvan3900 Hello, The orange one is a surf ski, (Pyranha Octane). The Blue one is a PH Valkyrie, the hull is exactly the same as the Octane - the big difference is the closed sea kayak deck and fittings. Both fast on flat water and fun in waves. The yellow is a PH Delphin. A very capable boat more much more rocker than the Valkyrie and Octane so great fun in surf. Thanks for watching. Have a look at the other videos to more of these boats in action. Thanks Darren
Arran is a great place, I was paddling out of Lochranza mid May and can't wait to go back.
Wow.. we were there mid May too. Must have tripped over each other. We definitely plan to go back. Id like to go right around. Would need to cross fingers to repeat the weather we had though. See you out there. Thanks Darren
New sub here , why dont you include the sounds of the sea and padlling ratger than music and continuos talking ?
Morning. Its a common question. The camera is in a dive case so the audio quality is no good. Occasionally there is some of the original audio but its a long process to try and correct the muffled sound of the dive case. On some of the earlier videos I didn't use a dive case as the insta360 X2 is allegedly waterproof.... However, the salt still found its way into the microphones and made the audio unusable. Eventually the salt ruined the camera altogether. I hope this help explain. I understand not everyone wants to listen to a commentary. Thanks Darren
Hi thanks for the quick reply it's appreciated , I just find the sea sound and paddling nice to listen too Enjoy the coming week safe travelling, look forward to the next videos
@@Glyn69 thanks for understanding. All the best Darren
Many thanks for sharing that adventure. Stunning views, I was with you all the way. Superb kit and beautiful Kayaks that must be an absolute joy to own. You were blessed with amazing weather and all in UK waters. Very well done.
Thanks Phil, It really was a great week with some good friends. It'd a challenge to beat that weather too.. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Darren
How many hours did it take?
This took 5 hours. Plus the time stopped at Dani's bar.. A great paddle though. I loved it
Cranking weather for your trips. You can't beat the sea on the West Coast, unlike the East Coast and parts of the South. It may be warmer, but you can't see much though the water. I used to Go to School in Hayling Island and the water was brown. Now live in North Norfolk and the sea is brown. So When I go up to Mull each year I just love being on the water or in it snorkeling. Can't be crystal clear water.
Yes, we were really lucky with the weather. I've had occasional trips in Cornwall with clear water but not always the case. It's quite a surprise when its clear around the Solent. I'm pretty sure we'll head back to Scotland fpr more paddles. Perhaps go right around Arran as a start...
Brilliant wee adventure video from up in bony Scotland. :) Thanks for visiting us, cookies were ace :) keep inspiring, keep spreading the Kayak joy :)
Our pleasure sir.. Thanks 👍
Surfskis are probably more common in the UK than you guys realize. Ease of self-rescue? Really guys? The fellow in the Octane has equipment falling out of his ski and clearly has not learned surfski remount well at all. Has he had any lessons or has he just "figured it out" on his own? Do you think he has spent 1/20th of the time practicing his remount that you spent practicing your roll? It isn't difficult, particularly in a stable surfski. Ease of self rescue is considered an advantage of surfskis over sea kayaks by many paddlers who have significant experience in both. If you can roll up in any kind of water, congratulations, but that is not your average sea kayaker's skill level either.
Cheers Paul This was one of his first tries in the octane he has had a lot more practice since, some planned and some not.. no training though - this was him figuring on the fly.
@@GoneKayaking Thanks for the reply. I have no complaint about his efforts. I like your videos and find them both entertaining and informative. But I found your comment about surfski remount ease (based on his technique at this point in his learning process? - that's some basis for any kind of evaluation) fairly misleading particularly when you follow that with your "easy" roll. Apples and oranges in terms of instruction, practice time, (and probably age and fitness of the paddlers) etc.
@@paulreavley5900 no worries, its a fair comment. I've never tried in the octane as its a faff to change his foot rests so I can't give a fair 1st hand judgement on getting back in it. (Though I'll happily chuckle at Chris' expense). Looking back at the video now, yep - he made quite a meal of his rescue but he's a bit slicker now. I started my paddling on waveskis in my 20s (a wee while back) and always appreciated the aspect that a failed roll wasn't a rescue mess in the rough stuff. Now I'm older and softer though, I like the enclosed, warmer environment in the yak. I suspect my CofG is slightly lower in the Valkyrie too even though its the same hull as the octane so the yak version is a touch more stable
@@GoneKayaking Fair enough...hard to evaluate merit and tradeoffs without adequate trial and experience. You might find the added leverage, acceleration, and speed from the surfski (from its higher seat, design to maximize use of leg extension, rotation, wing paddles, etc.) a fair trade off for the difference in stability in the kinds of conditions where surfskis tend to shine. There are certainly UK paddlers very experienced in both vessel types (e.g. Tom Thorpe at Surfski Dynamics) who can give you a reasonable list of pros and cons for each...
I have the V1 and absolutly love it. I recently installed a longer rudder(finn only), now its even better. Shout out from Denmark.
Excellent to hear. Yes, the rudder length is the biggest difference and a worthwhile upgrade. My Valkyrie is still my favourite toy 👍
Can I ask what GPS app you use to track your trips?
For sure. Its a Garmin fenix watch. Really good bit of kit
Looked great fun! Well done.
Thanks, yep.. this was a great morning. Thanks for watching. Keep an eye out for the Scotland trip!
👍🍻
Looks a nice paddle👍 Have you ever paddled om the River Wyre inland of Blackpool?
Hi there, Thanks, yes it was a good one cheers. I haven't paddled the Wyre. It looks like its worth a go though. Big tidal range and lots of mud if not timed right by the looks on the charts. But always worth a try. We're based on the South coast so dont often get so far north with travel times and days off work.
Nice paddle and probably good time of year to be there, in summer time it can be a bit much traffic.
Yes, it can get a bit crowded in there. Join us for the Wareham pub excursion..
Awesome to see a new video. Always appreciate them along with your voice and again so recognisable withe the blue P&H Valkyrie and yellow deck lines. And the Captain is there 🤪
Thanks indeed. Summer is coming and the water is warm so there'll be loads more to come. Thanks for watching and commenting 😁 Darren
Awesome!!
Thanks man.. just found some free wifi in Colombia..
My local waters. There is a beach at the back of that long cave. Big enough to land the kayaks and keep walking.
It was a lovely place to paddle. Not often so calm I imagine. Hopefully I'll meet you out there this summer
brilliant 👏
Cheers sir..
Love the comment(s) but......."where is the Captain" 🙂 Never change that blue Valkyrie with yellow deck lines as it so recognisable. Really loved this one with your "hole in te water" and "special Forces pixelation" : Owesome footage kzread.info/dash/bejne/aGygzLCciKffXZs.htmlsi=BKWNN6Cu-ewnt552 Ever watched @Northseakayak as in kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6Of3Kt7p73JmNo.htmlsi=WRmxdx93JnFdwbBV ??
Haha yes! The captain spent last summer sailing so we missed him in the videos. He's back from more sailing by this summer so more captain coming up from May. Yeah, the downwinder.. that was a great day, all the stars aligned and going through all the yachts up close was unforgettable. I have more downwind footage with my son and Chris paddling. There's a short sample on Instagram but I haven't had time to make a feature yet. And on @Northseakayak, yes, I think I've seen all of Dimitri's videos. He was definitely an influence in me choosing the Valkyrie. And I'm glad I did. I love the boat!
Wow, such a perfect day for cave exploring 😎😎
Thanks indeed. yes, this was soooo calm it was crazy. good memories of warm weather and hopefully we'll be back to T shirts again soon.
Stunning ride. Do you host kayaking groups regularly?
Hi Janis. I don't do commercial groups as I am not formally an instructor but I have met and paddled with several people I have met via the channel. Feel free to make contact via Instagram. The majority of my videos are with groups of friends
@@GoneKayaking thanks for suggestions.
I should probably watch more of your videos before asking... but what kayaks are you guys using? Love the scenery, thank you for taking us with you!
For sure, there's always more to watch.. ;-) Blue = P&H Valkyrie. Yellow = P&H Delphin 150 Orange = P&H Scorpio We're not sponsored by P&H, these are just really good boats. In the other videos you will see my older Dagger and Prijon boats as well as friends joining in with a few different flavours. Thanks indeed for watching and for commenting. Its great to get feedback along the way. Darren
@@GoneKayakingThanks for your reply! I'm new to kayaking, and still learning on flat water, but ocean paddling seems like a good goal to aim for.
@@Babett_B excellent, that's great to hear. There's plenty to learn but its good fun at all stages as you go. From just enjoying the outdoors and scenery to once you are chasing a few waves and doing some more fancy navigation trips. I'll watch out for your videos
Wow, great video. Thanks for sharing
My pleasure. Thanks for watching. There's always more to come so stay tuned 👀.
Great video:) Good to see you guys practising and keeping your skills sharp. Love it :)
Excellent. Thanks! I'd bet you noticed some yellow items in the mix there too..
Super vídeo !!👏👏👏
Gracias amigo 😁👍
Enjoyed the vid!.. but why doesn't your wife do an Eskimo roll with skirt in place....rather than eject?
Nicely made film and sure who doesn’t love a capsize 😮
Haha.. absolutely! Thanks.
Great video as always
Cheers old chap. You'll make me blush..
Nice one sir! Need to arrange a return visit to Anglesey for you
Yep. That's overdue.. I'll let it warm up a bit 1st... 😂
Nice video:-) A quick question since I can’t find many other people who owns this kayak, so here goes. Do you think that the Valkyrie would be able to handle a (15-25 kg) load for touring?
Hi mate, Thanks for that😜. I would think you can do that if you pack carefully and provided you are not built like Hercules. I have done plenty of overnight stops so not much kit but still around 10kg at a guess. It would happily carry more weight. The Valkyrie has a low profile section across the rear so limited space in the stern hatches which is probably the biggest constraint. The fwd hatch is narrower than many but also taller. You can hide a lot of kit in there. I hope that helps.
@@GoneKayaking it sure does, thanks. I had a Taran 16 som 10 years ago and would like something similar. Also looking at the roomier Epic 18x Sport, but since i’m currently living in Solund on the Norwegian west coast, rocks and lots of waves, a plastic boat is probably the wisest choice. Thanks for answering.
@@Uhmm485 wow.. Norway looks to offer some great paddles. I have not tried the Tarans but would like to. Chris in many of my videos has an Epic 18x. I think yes, more space but as you say, much more fragile for rocks and not very stable compared to the Valkyrie. The Epic is very comfortable upside down 👎 🙃... Haha
I’ll be in Anglesey in a few months with a ruddered boat. I notice your rudder was down in the race, did you try rudder up ?
Hi there, I didn't try with the rudder up to be fair. The Valkyrie is quite rudder dependent with very little traction aft of the cockpit. I'd think a more traditional shape is probably better with the rudder up. I suspect the Valkyrie would be manageable with the rudder up but the race there isn't my first choice of spots to experiment as it would be hard work to get back if I messed up and drifted off downstream... I expect to get back to Anglesey later this year so maybe we'll meet up on location 😜 Thanks and all the best Darren
Gooooooooood. Fun & Nice kayaking... from jeju island in south Korea.
Thank you very much 👍 Jeju looks amazing too. I will try and paddle there one day...
beautiful, but what’s the purpose of the hideous background music?
Thanks for watching. Please feel free to say what music you prefer. I'm always open to suggestions for better royalty free music.
A view of the coast one would normally see. Great to watch.Steve...❤😅
Sorry missed off the word NOT normally see.
@@stevebaker1849 haha.. It happens to us all. Thanks for watching. Darren
Excellent. Thanks
Porgies look like a great idea to keep the hands warm and have a good grip on the paddle. However, if you managed to up end, how easy is it to get them off for a wet exit?
Very easy. Your hands just slide out so no different to not being on at all. Thanks for watching.. 👀
Great video! Very interested by the Valkyrie available here but hesitating between it and the Ocean X mostly for a question of weight.
The Ocean X looks awesome. I'd love to try one. I chose plastic as I don't want to be too worried every time I get near rocks. Carbon would be great to compare though.
Skudder?
Both the Valkyrie and the Octane have the overstern rudder fitted. Both boats are from the same bloodline so both can take an understern rudder. Captain Chris has one and will fit and test that on a future video. For downwind in deep water the understern would be better but for kayaking to and from different beaches and landing etc, the understern would be a hassle
@@GoneKayaking Great video. I am just starting my sea kayaking journey with the delivery of P&H Leo tomorrow so can't wait to get out on the water
@@gw6797 sounds great. I've not played with a Leo. I'll watch how you get on with your videos
A piece of bungee cord for chin strap, keeps your hat in place.
Aha.. good plan. I had a lanyard but it disappears over my back in a roll.. oops.. Thanks for watching
Looked like a fun paddle! Thanks for posting. Cheers
It was a great one indeed. thanks for watching 😁
Some lovely paddling there. Really miss that nicer weather 🙂
Cheers sir.. Most definitely. Warm is good - cold is just silly
Where's Chris? Ooo a wave..weeeee lol.
Haha.. yep. He knows I can't resist a nice wave. Immaturity is quick to follow
Love a downwind run and the Valkyrie performing brilliantly. (So was the paddler)
Excellent.. you'll make me blush.. 😂
Fantastic - thank you for sharing… who has right of way with the sailing boats?
Haha.. you must get down here and give it a go. Who gives way is often a topic. Power (propelled by machinery) gives way to sail.. I'm not a machine though so my rule of thumb is to stay out of the way. They're bigger than me and I often can't be sure I've been seen. Plus they're trying to make gains in a race while I'm just messing about.
Yes - I wouldn’t be arguing with them… I just wondered if there was a rule. Although of course common sense would be like you say - just don’t get in the way…
Great video, thanks for putting the neo deck through its paces :)
My pleasure. You will be seeing a lot more of it from now on too.. My new favourite toy..
Bring it up to Anglesey and we'll try on a day of rescues.... Looks pretty good... Do you have one for a normal sized waist?!
I will bring it up.. if Rosa doesn't paddle then I'll bring the Delphin.. The waist sizes are universal - just add cake to fill any voids.
Great vids. Can I ask what kind of camera you are using and how it's mounted onto the front deck?
Thanks 👍 Generally it is done with the Insta360 x2. I mount it on the dent lines just crissed through the bracket so it can give with a hit from waves or paddle without damage. I have a photo here instagram.com/p/CXqsCUdshJX/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Y’all’s paddles are upside down 🎉
Haha, yes.. oops. 🙃
Quite a trip, love playing in tide between small islands.
It was great thanks. Hopefully, I'll get back and see the west fjords at some point
Great video, full of adventure. Love it :)
Thanks guys.. There'll be many more to come. Cap'n Chris will be back soon, plus loads more to edit and likely back to Brazil soon after xmas
That checkered paddle is a Lendal isn't it? Worth the money?
I think yes, It was a lendal or Celtic. That was Suzanne's based in Iceland. She was more than happy with it.
@GoneKayaking nice! On my list for sure. Working on getting new kayak first.
@@adamfrbs9259 excellent.. new toys to look forward to.
