Tasmin / The Wild Island Farm

Tasmin / The Wild Island Farm

This is my story.

My name is Tasmin, I am a writer, storyteller, author, environmentalist and freelance creative. I love to create all kinds of things - from a herb garden to photographs to fictional worlds.

Born & raised in Germany (close to Munich) I now live in Portugal. On the Azores, to be exact, a group of nine tiny islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We have bought an old island home that we are currently renovating and the attached land is supposed to become a sustaining and nurturing wild farm and food forest.

I sometimes also talk about books and writing on this channel.
If you wanna learn more about me, please check out my website.

Hello Tasmin, Thank you for sharing so frankly about your life on this island. Personally, I think that this video should be a per-requisite before moving to the island. Amazing synopsis of what matters. Ha, ha. I looked for your previous video, but could not find it. I am sorry. I wish I could have seen it.

100% true. I live on Terceira and feel absolutely the same. Probably, I can add 3 notes: 1. Regarding luxury, you can see some rather luxurious cars crossing the island in summer. But I guess it's more likely the tourists who can afford that. 2. And the weather. For me, it's a more subjective thing, but here +30 feels much more comfortable than +30 in the city because here it's mostly windy, especially close to the ocean. Anyway the sun is harsh, and you should always put sun protection on you from April till almost November no matter how naturally tant you are. 3. I would suggest to people who would like to move here to rent accommodation for the first year before buying your own house. There are a lot of houses on sale here, so I guess if you bought one, it might be a bit of a problem to sell it if you change your mind.

Life is so funny, and you are so brave. I’m from America, but I live in Germany now with my little family. My life path is impossible to explain; there’s so much trauma, changes, loss, and confusion. When I went to Portugal for the first time, a feeling like I’ve never felt before hit me so hard. I’ve lived in many countries, climates, and cultures. I’ve travelled extensively, for which I’m so grateful for. But I never thought I’d experience that feeling that I have in Portugal. I left having bought a house, knowing I’d come back. It’s been several years and I’m filled with the same pure joy every time I visit (we will move there permanently once our kids finish their Abitur). I see that same experience in you, and it’s so special. We are the lucky ones. Thank you for sharing your story!

You must leave the Azores Rapidly as soon as possible! There's to many cows there!!! Especially in Terceira Island where they have to many Toros!! You see the cow farts are ruining the planet and it is causing major Climate change!!! I think you are risking your life in the middle of no where surrounded by Cattle it is unsafe!!

Best goals are achievable goals ;-) Regarding paint, cost and humidity issues, look into limewashing and hotmixing lime. The highly alkaline properties stop mold and regulate humidity quite well. And it's very affordable (you'll need to mix it yourself and be careful doing it with the appropriate ppp). Our old house was abandoned for 20+ years and was dryer than any of the Air BnB's we have stayed at on the island. The house was originally pointed and plastered with a lime aggregate as was the norm for thousands of years before portland cement came around. Looking forward to meeting you in person at some point. The island is small. All the best for you both.

Thank you for enjoying my content :) I do as much content as I can, considering that KZread is an incredibly time-intensive hobby. A 20min video takes me a minimum of 8 hours to make, sometimes multiple days, depending on what it is. A sit-down video is much faster than a vlog for example. If you want to support my work and allow me to do more of it, under every video I have an info on how to do that :)
