Petals and Metal Flower Farm
Petals and Metal Flower Farm
Gardening in Ohio on the edge of zones 5 and 6. We are a husband and wife team creating our slice of heaven on the last 2 acres of what was once a large farm. We will have plant sales in the spring and starting in the summer of 2023, a u-pick flower farm.

i have had 3 chip drops and they have all been great....some better quality than others...but who cares...i just pay $20 to sweeten the pot and it never taken more than a week to get the chips :)
Thanks for some good.info. I'm building my frame now for.my hoop.household
You're welcome! Good luck with yours and happy growing!
Bought 9 Moonlight yarrow, because the color is just breathtaking. They don’t require much water, so one went into a corner where the sprinkler hardly reaches. Only one, and it is a gorgeous clump now.
Love this!! 🧡🌼💚 Thank you. 😊
Managing yarrow is something else. Bought two wee ones and now they are over 3ft wide and 3 ft. Tall. I'm thinking next year of selling those and my bergamot that have just shot out all over.
If you have fungal gnats or white mildew on top of soil in house plants how do you get rid of them all
If you have mildew, the soil is too wet. Let it dry out, that will help with the fungus gnat larvae. You can try mosquito bits also. If it's a bad infestation, change your soil.
Fantastic video 😊full of information presented in a loving knowledgeable way easy to listen to.Thanks
Thank you!
Thanks for the info
You bet
Love this idea, very inspiring to keep tackling those unique pots!
Yes ❤ March 1st bought 5 pound bag of starting mix..... FUNGAL GNATS 😢 I did everything but my Early seedlings where goners so I used heat is what I used💚💚💚💚💚
I bought my papaver roots at Walmart in the spring in April and they had delicate green growth on them, I obviously had to take them out of the package and I wanted to nurse them in a small pot for a while since they were tiny and delicate, I planted them in a 5" pot with the green growth exposed above the soil level and put them out in full sun and it was an 83 degree day and 5 hours later the green growth sprouting from the roots withered and turned brown, did I kill them? I brought them back inside, what should I do?
Sunburnt from not hardening off. There's a chance that they may come back from that. I would put them outside on a porch or something, take care of them and see if you get any new sprouts. When plants haven't been exposed to the elements the sudden shock can set them back quite a bit.
@@PetalsAndMetal yeah that's what I figured, I'm kinda frustrated with myself because I bought them yesterday and I knew I probably should have kept them temporarily in indirect light and I didn't expect the temperature to be 83 degrees in April. Definitely hotter than usual for this time of year. My plan was to harden them off but just made the mistake of putting them in full sun on a hot day
I planted 2023.....yellow and a pink. 2 plants..yarrow....I'm in lower Michigan and its spring 4/15/24... they are growing back nicely......I enjoyed these easy care plants..I pruned regularly when needed
A ridge beam for support the long way would have prevented that damage and 2 cross support braces Nice set up im building one with a 3 foot wall
I'm planning 3' walls on my next one so I can go wider. Will most likely do some support too. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing! ❤
How long until this boomer figures out that here video has no audio There should be an award for low effort
Check your sound system because there is sound.
Eat clit
Do you have any idea how long these will take to sprout above ground? Thank you.😊
In a pot or in the ground?
Above and betond, your awsome chic, are you married 😉😎👍
Just subscribe to your general enjoy it I'll be watching more we're gonna put a hoop house up this year but I got a greenhouse so that's what we're doing Stay safe and have a good day
This was perfect! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all that. Personally, I used to have ornamental grasses and had a heck of a time cutting them back... LOL. We're gonna put your video in the next issue. Thanks!
your husband is right, those posts are great. Wait until you try to pull one out. They are tough to get out. Often taking some digging. If I were to attempt this.....I'd use them. I use them to hold up my hog panels in my tomato garden. Nice house, ya''ll knew what you were doing
Thanks for your comment. We had a bad storm come through the other night and it's still standing 😊
Thanks very much for sharing these 4 methods. Just a quick question about temperature - the soil should heat to 180 Fahrenheit, right?
Yes, Fahrenheit
Great tips! Very helpful. I bought straw for around my raised beds last year, I’ll be using my dried grasses! Thanks!
You're welcome!
Awesome!! Thank you for simplifying these different methods. Appreciate it! ❤️
You are so welcome!
You are a star ❤ I am planting these hopefully this year....you are very informative and you show everything in clewr detail, well done that woman, greetngs from across the pond x
Thank you so very much!
Is it okay to seal the ziploc bag as soon as it cools? Will it still feel moist? Will it get moldy? I wanted to make shower favors with seed packets and bagged soil in a pot but now I’m nervous. Thanks
Once it's cooled, yes. I would keep an eye on it if it's super moist. Maybe open the bag once in awhile if it's going to be a long time.
It's shouldn't mold since it's been sterilized.
Thanks so much for the quick reply!
Do you cut back to the points it’s just soil and no leaves and stems are showing? And is it done right before winter?
I leave a couple of inches all around, basically giving it a big haircut. I bring them in when night temperatures start getting in the mid 50's.
I shared this a while back when i 1st found your video. But its been a minute or 2 since then, soooo.. imma share it again!😁😁😁! Tagging you of course beautiful human!😊✌🏻tysm for sharing this. For those of us who are newbeez/clueless, this not only comes in handy& teaches us 🙏🏻 YOU are out here saving lives!!😊
Thank you so much for sharing!! Def not try to save any gnats lives, lol
Thank you so much for the information 😊
Awesome! Thanks so much, you are great at teaching. I have made myself a seed tracker/sow calendar. Also, I think you should add a screenshot of your spreadsheet to this KZread video's thumbnail, to reach more people looking for this!
Thank you 😊 what I really need to do is redo the video, lol. My editing skills are much better now. Thanks for the suggestion on the thumbnail. Good luck growing this year!
If you're using a soil like Miracle-Gro are you going to damage the nutrients that Miracle Grow puts in their by microwaving?
I do my own fertilizing so that's not something I've been concerned about so I can't really answer your question.
How did you attach those vertical studs to the 2/4s on top and bottom of side walls? Did you just toenail the screws?
Yes
I tried winter sowing yarrow. I got over 70 plants from two water jugs. Summer Pastels and Colorado mix.
That's awesome! What did you do with all of them?
@@PetalsAndMetal Planted some, gave away some to friends and family, and I plan on selling the rest in the spring.
Winter sowing perennials is so easy!
@@PetalsAndMetal Yes, some species are very easy. But some not so much.
If I’m working with a small bag of potting soil, is it safe to put the whole bag in the microwave or oven? Will the plastic melt? It would make it a lot easier than finding a container (and I really don’t want to use my good baking dishes). I’m using 8qt bags or smaller.
Do not put plastic in your microwave.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Can/should this method be used for a small outdoor garden bed? What about the PH that outdoor and indoor plants need? Thank you for the great information in your video!
My Graceful Grass Prince Tut has been outside planted in my garden all summer and fall. Is it possible to take the new growth and repot it in container and bring inside for winter?
I'd certainly give it a try. If you don't you'll never know 😊. I don't have experience with one planted in the ground so that's the best advice I can offer.
Amazon has metal zip ties they’re awesome
Will def use those next time. Hopefully someone will see your comment and save themselves some aggravation.
Just tie it with a string
So can I eat that potato
It will taste awful. These are bred for ornamental not for eating.
My King Tut plants were originally in the exact container you showed and I planted them in to a 10" wide pot - not in the ground. Can I just bring that pot inside for the winter? Or would I still need to repot them into a larger pot. I don't think I'll plant them in the ground next year either. (if they make it)
I repotted mine to give it room to grow because it was really root bound. If yours isn't root bound, it should be ok. Mine struggled a bit over the winter but once I put it back out, it went all gangbusters again.
Not at all helpful.
What would you like to know? Perhaps you would like to watch my longer version? kzread.info/dash/bejne/oIaVrNufetvaepc.htmlsi=kyGP3C2cn8-LM4bF
Should she have said it in some other language for you?
Thanks for all the great info!
You bet!
Thanks for making this video. Very informative. I have some coleus to overwinter. Thank you ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Great job making this video! So much information!
I want to do this, but I’d have to re pot it. What kind of insecticidal soap do you use? I always have tons of bugs outside. Right now my pots of begonias have lots of ants in them 😩 I hate any bug. How do I make sure I won’t bring bugs indoors? Also, my window sills are very low to ground and with kids it won’t work. So can I place on a nightstand that is right front of a window?
Yes to using something to bring the plants up off the floor. I mix my own insecticidal soap. A few drops of soap in spray bottle. You can drench your plant by putting it into a container a bit larger than the one it is in and leaving it to soak for 30 mins or so. The bugs will come out to the surface, hopefully dead, from drowning.
How warm is the temperature in your room
Usually 72-74 degrees. We keep our home pretty warm.
Question for you. I bought some potting mix I want to sterilize. I do not want gnats or other critters. In the past all new mix I have bought has been contaminated. So returning and buying another isnt ideal. What do you do to readd micronutrients to your soil after sterilization? I worry I will kill all benificial nutrients.
I don't do anything after I've microwaved it.
I would like to try this now…is it to soon? (9/30/23 ) I am in zone 8b PNW Or do I need to wait? Typically we get our first frost mid October-November. Have been growing 🤔 through planting withdrawals since hand surgergy … 6 months later and I still can’t lift or hold a pound or two. So I think this would be doable and who doesn’t look forward to pretty flowers? TY😊
Yes, much too early. You need to wait a minimum for winter solstice.
Hi, Any updates on the phlox sowing/planting/propagation? Wonder how they turned out.
They were doing well until I forgot to water them 😭. I have 1 remaining.
