Hi! My name is Rokas. I've been doing Aikido for more than 15 years, taught it and ran my professional dojo. Eventually I became disillusioned with Aikido and moved on to train combat sports such as BJJ, MMA and kickboxing. Now I am coming back to see one more time if Aikido can be made functional with the new knowledge I have from combat sports. I also question various martial arts and promote critical thinking in martial arts.

Check out the video which started my martial arts journey - Aikido vs MMA - here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yn-JurZ8aMrFoM4.html

    I would love to hear his opinion on body strikes,such as shoulder strikes and bumps,like in Baji. I have reason to believe they would be really practical for self defence,and i would like to know what he thinks. I have a playlist as an example of what i mean.

    You ask why Seagal doesn't rotate his arm all the way for a more powerful punch, citing Boxing as supporting your view. But you're talking about *modern boxing* where boxers' fists are protected by ludicrous-looking padded gloves. Yes, step back for a second and think about how ridiculous those mittens look to someone who has never seen them. Now think about 18th century boxing when boxers fought bare-knuckled, like how it goes down in the real world. What's their stance? How do they punch? Now it makes sense why a person without oversized red mittens would punch like Seagal so he doesn't self-own by breaking his own hand. Punch to push and throw off-balance, sure why not. Preserve your own hands because you have a dozen other ways to win the fight without voluntarily breaking them.

    I can’t see how wrestling would rank so far above Japanese JJ when you take into account the so much wider moves and fighting palette that JJ offers. In wrestling you compete with so many more rules and it’s a point based system. JJ has more focus on self-defense, including work with weapons.

    You question whether it's realistic or practical to target the eyes which are small moving targets, or whether you can accurately attack the brainstem when defending against a takedown. But even if you cannot do it, if Seagal can do it then for him it is legit. He demonstrated striking precisely at Enkamp's superior patellar pole using his middle knuckle, repeatedly, while his target is hidden by Enkamp's baggy karate pants. Enkamp has the clearly demarcated dime-sized bruise to prove it. Are you confident to punch someone's knee without breaking your own hand because you're 2 cm off? I think if he can strike 1 small spot that he can't even see with 1 knuckle, he can certainly knife-hand your atlas if you're showing him the back of your neck. Boxing prohibits punching your opponent at the back of the neck for a reason. Edit: Of course, this doesn't mean it should be a go-to technique, because I acknowledge the difficulty in pulling it off. As you said, a cooperative student is different from an uncooperative opponent.

    I doubt Paul Sharp has trained in Okinawa. It’s true that Karate has been weakened due to competition focus when it migrated to mainland Japan. I know a cop who had many physical encounters and Goju Ryu was perfect for him to overcome his attackers and overpower them on the street. Putting Karate at the bottom of the ranking is ridiculous. And TKD also trains regularly with full contact sparring. So you get trained in managing distance, attacks from multiple angles, hitting full power on bags, focus pads, etc.

    Legitimate Krav maga organisations like IKMF, KMW, and KMG are notoriously stingy about coaching badges, grading and giving out belts. Going straight to the poor quality control in the US has become a bit of a lazy trope on this topic. How would Paul like if someone were to rank "police professionalism" based on the what they know about standards in Haiti or New Delhi?

  • @Liam1991
    @Liam1991Сағат бұрын

    When it comes to using martial arts as a police officer, the goal is to restrain and arrent them. As well as how to use the tools they have to carry. I think the best martial arts for police officers should be centred around this sort of training. Which, you won't get from sport or traditional martial arts.

    yeah I totally agree, BJJ is great as a sport and martial art. But for self defence... You need to be aware that some moves are just not safe to pull on the street.

    The part on kickboxing is very outdated and biased. Kickboxing is not kicks. It's boxing PLUS kicks, knees, elbows (depending on the rules).

    Great advice on using the clinch in a streetfight. A friend of mine had to learn the hard way with a blade in his gut. Luckily, he survived. I like what Active Self Protection says.. "The eyes are the windows to the soul, and the hands are the windows to intent." Training to monitor/feel the belt line for weapons. Learning to stop the draw is very important. 👊

    I’ve seen many of these videos. What I get is that not everyone agrees what “self-defense” actually means, each person brings its own definition (sometimes not even explicitly). That makes so many inconsistencies and differences in how MA are rated. Anyway, at the end I imagine that’s the point, just a chill discussion, but don’t expect accurate assessments.

  • @bigballsmcgee8681

    It's natural that people's answers to the question "what is self-defense" would depend on their experiences and environmental factors. I live in an area where seeing a firearm in public is about as likely as being struck by lightning so my question is different from someone who lives in an area that has many. Still all of the different questions are valuable, and I doubt that you'll ever find a Unified ranking system, so listening to people's experiences will give you a greater knowledge base to work from.

    Most people don't know how to take a punch, even fewer people know how to take a kick. The ability to take out your opponent outside their reach should definitely be considered too. A solid roundhouse to the leg and the average dude is down like a sag of potatoes.

  • @NickKano11
    @NickKano112 сағат бұрын

    Always felt low kicks were under rated. They're extremely painful, but at the same time they won't knock someone out or put them in the hospital- so in a way they could be a great "warning shot" for someone to back off. That, and it looks better in court than punching someone in the face.

We definitely pressure test at our dojo, shodan gradings are full contact shark tanks (mma in a gi less protection than kudo) you have to prepare for that and that starts at 9th kyu.

    @@Kthomasritchie its excellent for self defence as they teach looking out for the next attack from a 2nd assailant whilst engaged with the first, finding the exit, awareness of surroundings (cameras) and how to do sneaky shit whilst appearing to be less violent than you actually are, and after you have found that exit you can make your ninja roll exit.

    Jeet Kune Do is a set of philosophical principles which Bruce Lee applied to combat. JKD isn't a style in itself and Lee passionately argued against adopting a static style. If you add in all of the techniques banned in modern MMA then MMA is the nearest we currently have to Lee's vision for absorbing what is useful and discarding what is useless.

    I have trained in karate and taekwondo, as well as street fighting. While I am definitely no expert in any specific style - my experience has taught me that the idea that "90% of fights end up on the ground" is wrong. In reality - fights can end up standing up, one guy against a wall, on the ground, against a desk, and a myriad of other possibilities. I think the cage fighting of UFC/MMA/The Gracies with BJJ popularized that idea. And while BJJ is absolutely a formidable style; probably one of the best there is on the ground. Life doesn't always go that way. I don't think there is any way to ever put an honest percentage on how a fight can turn out - it is as unpredictable as life itself.

    SORRY but this vid is the biggest SCAM ever i watched. It is like the same, when you put two 9 year old children togheter, and this 2 children discussing and want to find out, how It is to be an adult Person from 18 - 99 years Who struggeld to making money with Different Jobs. First what I want say at the beginning is this (and its agreed to be correct of All martial arts and mma pros : Not the Martial arts make you win a fight or win a self defence Situation, It is always really ALWAYS the Person, the fighter Who make the win or Lose. Meaning : if you Are a Person Who is well Trained and has good reactions It is Not so necessary which MA you practise... For example : if a women Trained the same MA and use this MA in a self defence Situation, and you Compare the outcome with a fit man, Who also Trained the same MA and find hiself in the same self defence Situation, no question : the Man wins. Because, He is just stronger as the women. His body is stronger.) and this example you can use for the question, which MA is better for selfdefence. For example : if a man use a selfdefence MA style and you Compare the outcome with a women - this women has less strenght and less weight, even if she Trained a SS+ MA she will loose against the man, why? Just because the Man is the BETTER FIGHTER! AND WHEN YOU ARE THE BETTER FIGHTER IN THE MOST SITUATION APPEARING YOU NOT EVEN NEED TO KNOW A MARTIAL ART! So this is the point. And this is the reason why It is so useless to Compare MA s in this way like the guy Who did this video does It. The other thing why this is bullshit is because of the reason that, this two guys discussing the usage of MA which the probaly Not even mastered by them self, well Not even Trained, Not even for a year. So how guys, HOW you want to know, how good a MA is in self defence, if you, by yourself, Not Trained and maxed out this MA by yourself? It is like talking about the Taste of a cake which you have had never eaten in your life before! And all this makes It even worsgt, that this guy proclaimed a "Former police Office" Who should make the race with him about the Best MA in self defence, well guys, you can be a shoplifter or a police Officer or a homeless guy, It doesnt matter It is the same : if you dont have had well Trained a MA you can Not say about the outcome of It. And Thats the reason why i said at the beginning, that These two guys Who talking about in this Video, Are the same equal like two 9 y old Kids Who try to discussing how It is to be old and make money in Different Jobs. This Video is stupid. It is a scam. Dont believe what this guys say. At the end All comes up to this : Who is the better fighter, will win the fight or the self defence Situation. No matter if He Trained a so called "B martial Art" or so called "SS+ Martial Art"... Guys the better fighter in a self defence Situation, Not even need a Martial Art for win the fight. Skip this Video. And dont believe this stupid bullshit. It is a shame what this Video is about, and what this two children say. Dont believe this bullshit. This vid makes me sad. It is sad to Compare MA like this. Just sad. Nothing Else just sad.
