Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey KZread channel!
My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.
Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my KZread channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

Not really IMHO. In this video, one guy has the knife and the armor. That is why striking did not work. The challengers were trained martials artists. I'm sure their strikes would be effective. Also, a real knife attack would not start at a distance. They would hide the knife until they were very close to you, if they are smart. This video shows 2 things: 1. Medieval knights were on the spot.. 2. Dont grapple with a knife attacker.

@@emremokoko When it comes to an actual knife fight, the loser dies in the street, and the winner dies in the ambulance. When it comes to a knife attack from someone determined to kill an unarmed person, even a skilled one, a smart martial artist will just run, just like they would from 4 attackers at once (and just like any real martial artist should from any fight that can be avoided, even easily winnable ones, and I'd say even especially the easily winnable ones), because IpMan doesn't exist in reality and trying some Steven Segal nonsense in that kind of situation is only going to get you killed. You're very right, though, that you'd almost never be attacked as "fairly" as in this situation, you're almost certainly not going to see it coming and be stabbed 15 times before you're even aware they have a knife, if, like you said, the attacker isn't a blithering moron, so these skilled fighters had even more of a leg up than they would in any real situation. "In this video, one guy has the knife and the armor" First of all, they're wearing the same armor, and second of all the entire purpose of this is to simulate what happens when one person has a knife and the other doesn't, so I don't get what your point was. Also, the number one way a knight was killed in battle, outside of maybe a crossbow/longbow, was to be dragged to the ground and stabbed to death through all of the obvious weak points in their armor, almost exactly like happened to these guys, except the knight would be wearing 45 pounds of armor and fighting in the mud with 5 peasants all shanking him at once. The purpose of plate armor was to defend against slashing attacks from other people in plate armor (and random small hits from thrown rocks and that kind of thing when in open battle), it absolutely will not save your life from a knife attack like this, the only thing that would do that is your sword and killing the attacker(s) first. That's part of the reason that knights would so often be fighting other knights with codes and rules or from horseback, and they would often end up taking their opponents hostage, because training and equipping a knight is incredibly expensive and takes decades, while getting together 5 peasants with knives is very easy and nearly as effective when it comes to fighting on foot like this.

Rare case you get the knife subdue the attacker and get out of their usually ends up with cut hands and afew stab wounds to the arms the best iv found us not to go for the knife it self bt rather keep distance and hurt the person holding it and I'd you can grab a weapon like stick or some thing to out range them then you might have a better chance at taking that knife otherwise your getting stabbed where you get stabbed depends on how close you are to the attacker for me the only way was to hurt him so bad he ran away but not before he got me and he got me good

We have to remember, these it's their job to stab people I'd say the majority of rays that carry knives don't have a job, so whilst I agree and have my eyes opened to how hard it would be We should still remember that these were all decent sized guys, with some kind of martial arts knowledge because even with the knife they didn't lose position very easily except the takedowns So if these were smaller people I think they'd have less wounds and more points But in real life stab wounds aren't fun and games and they arent points so regardless of size avoid fighting people with knives But the weight and strength of the guys just isn't the same as most knife wielding twats

That's where the term bulletproof actually comes from- breastplates and such would be tested by shooting them, and the proof lied in the dent. Hence the term. Knives and daggers are used to easily bypass armor by slipping into their gaps and weakpoints, which is extremely hard to defend against in a grapple. Hence the old saying.

I attended a knife defense seminar a couple of months ago, and the instructor essentially said, "All these exercises will give you a good chance...at blocking the first strike. Everything after that is anyone's guess because all attackers act differently." He even demonstrated it with another high level instructor, saying exactly what he was going to do before he did it and even then he managed to land quite a few hits. Seeing this exercise really drives home the point that no matter what, you're going to get stabbed if you fight a guy with a knife.

Yes and no. You do have a chance if you can find a weapon either larger than the knife such as a bat, metal bar, hanger (yes make a metal wire whip unfolding it ) or anything that can be larger than a knife. You can take off your shirt and use as a weapon to trap his arm when attacker starts jamming the knife into you. However, never engage in a fist brawl with a knife fighter or you will def lose.

He said even the people with years and years of training only had like, idk 2.5 or 4 percent ? chance to survive fighting against a person with a knife. Even he literally suggested running away. He told a story about himself, saying that he was attacked by a random person who tried to slice his throat while he was passing by a place some shit was going on. He had the reflexes to dodge it and lay that man to the ground until police arrived but I am sure he felt damn lucky too, doing so.

@@antonioj123 Those are odds equivalent to just surrendering, if not worse. Again no training saves you from a knife, but it can save you from being in such a situation altogether. Combat focused, war knives are actually very compact because all it takes is 3 inches inward to end someone, as they can make wounds that are impossible to fix. Even if you practice for it chances are for you to get stabbed and bleed out in the tussle. For the record, what people used to kill fully plated knights were plain daggers.

Once quick point that changes this equation a little, slightly for the better, is these guys are not out to kill each other, and are protected against such attacks to the throat etc. Recognizing its is your life or theirs, take theirs immediately. Use whatever can cripple or kill the quickest. Throat strike from a distance if possible. In close, gouge the eyes and see if they have the will to hold the knife. If they do, your F***ed. If they don't, your chances of surviving went up significantly provided you haven't already taken lethal damage. Not saying that significantly puts the odd in the defenders favor, just saying it helps.

I had a few problems with this knife scenario and honestly it's quite unrealistic unless the guy is wearing protective gear and attacking you with a one inch knife in a closed room, which is highly unlikely. One problem was the size of the marker. Normally it takes 3.5 to 4 inches of knife penetration to inflict a fatal wound, it looked like 1 to .5 inches were sticking out of the guys hand. Another major problem and it was mentioned in the comments, the attacker is wearing protective gear and taking very little damage.

its a bit worrying that you might be missing the point with the marker. he used a marker purely for illustration purposes. irl he wouldnt have needed 22 fatal stabs to kill. the marker illustrated points of contact between a bladed weapon and the flesh. they were both wearing armor, but the fact is that these encounters wouldnt have lasted 20 seconds anyway. its the ease in which a person can simply start stabbing you while you attempt to hold them back. swapping in a real knife and taking off the armor probably wouldnt have made any difference for any of them

@@loukvge8946 I agree. I think striking is the best way to stop the knife wielder. Straight up grappling with the knife proved to be a losing strategy. Once you grab a guy that has the knife he can stab you with his eyes closed if he is that determined. He can feel the the openings on you. I don't want to give him this opening on myself. I have to out move him and strike with the utmost power to stun him or knock him out and this is to be done explosively without hesitation and spontaneous. I love boxing but this is not boxing. I'm going to throw a punch with my whole body and the target is 3 feet behind the persons head. I 'm going to hit with a 150 mph punch right through the head. My intention is nothing more than to kill or disable the attacker. Raw explosive speed and accuracy is all I'm looking to generate. Like a sniper, one glance one shot one kill with no hesitation. There is no fight there's just me killing the opponent. That's where I'm coming from. This ability developed out of years of training and sparring. When I got in the zone the fight was over. mhmmmmmmmm i dont know. Yes Knife defense is dangerous. But statistics do not not necessarily support that conclusion sir. People get attacked in knife encounters and they survive. this does happen. IMO you have to take into account 1) no one in this challenge had really proper knife training except for like one month 2) they were all wering protective gear.. this is not life ultering but.. e G at 14:10 Matt landed a good left hand straight on the jaw. I dont know his punching power, but a good punch has taken people out on the street. This might have been enough to give him time to run. 3) Not every knife is like "touchy lasersword sharp" where one scratch at the surface wounds you deeply into the organs. espescially with leather clothes on People are not always paid assasins, with assasin weapons who attack you but more likely drug crackheads grabbing sharp bottles, kitchen knives, sharp edges and so on against that most of the paticipants would have done much better 4) also wrestling on pavement At least seth could have had on or two knock outs on there

Now I'm no knife defense expert and most likely, we're going to get stabbed in a real knife fight. But there's a few factors to consider. The "knife" in here is treated as razor sharp and super strong. So even a light touch counts as a stab wound. Second the attacker is hell-bent on killing you AND he's got martial arts training. He's the worst-case opponent. Also there's no tables, chairs, or anything for you to throw at the attacker. It's literally just you and him. So this is quite literally the worse case scenario.

@@derekvandenburg6689 It is not about KO. As you can see, in this video the attacker does not flinch or make any gestures of retreat/defend. When you are hurt, you are not that offensive, And yes, with 1-2 real punches the amount of "machine gun stab" would be less. I don't know if you have sparred, I have. Even a "half power" hold back punch is enough to disorientate you. Very few people have "iron chin", this includes attackers/knife guy too. So it can give you windows of opportunity, alternatives to rushing into the knife aiming to get hold of the hand. Check how the tall MMA guy (not Rokas, Jeff something) basically does a WWE style "spear" into the opponent, toppling him and doing some ground and pound before the "bad guys" frees his hand and starts stabbing. That ground and pound would almost KO a mugger(who almost assured it is not some uber-hyper trained dude, just used to regular punches. Now imagine Mike Tyson blasting a knife wielder not protected by the helmet.. I know in videos is not showing but Rokas is a huge guy. He helds back self obviously because crew and friends, you do not aim to injure your guys, otherwise no content :D. Size matters. A non-holding back angry almost 2 meters tall Lithuanian fit guy could do real damage to attacker.

These exercises are completely lopsided, because the "knife wielder" gets points for lightly touching someone with a pencil, essentially suffering no drawbacks compared to a real situation, on the contrary really since a light touch suffices, while the unarmed defender cannot hurt the attacker. Completely changes the dynamic of the scenario, so not really a reality check. It's a good training exercise nonetheless.

This makes me think about one of Mike’s recent videos where he said no matter what you think you’ll do you fall back on training. Most of these guys just went straight for the body and were stabbed immediately. The only success was the guy who got hold of the knife hand and didn’t let go. I was thinking the whole time that was really the only way to not get stabbed but I imagine when you’ve trained so hard and so many years in kicking, punching, and grappling that you go on autopilot and what makes the most sense disappears from your mind. I don’t know and I sure hope I’m never in that scenario because if these guys all died I sure as hell wouldn’t stand a chance.

Otherwise in close combat you're done. The second reason fleeing is preferable, is that even if you somehow manage to immobilise them you never know if they're alone or more people are coming from behind you. Over the past few years there has been a tournament held in Tokyo where martial artists take turns to attack each other with a dummy knife. I helped one of my students to prepare for it with red marker drills similar to this scenario. We both ended up with a lot of red marks! Interestingly we found in both our training drills and the actual tournament, it was aggressive striking which proved to be the most effective strategy. If you do that to some guy with no fighting experience he will probably fall down. If you kick his head you might knock him out. As soon as he gets close to you, you are basically dead though. Overall great challenge for showing self defense in a dangerous situation, but I wish that there was a better way to gauge the pressure of contacts with the marker, since not every contact would result in meaningful damage. Also it would have been interesting to see a knife analog that had more of a knife shape to it, which might have allowed for disarming the attacker

As a 2nd dan karate practicioner with a focus on self-defense, I'd say this about knife encounters: If you're well-trained and your opponent isn't, you have about a 1 in 5 chance of surviving; If your opponent has knife training, there's nothing you can do but run, regardless of how well-trained you are. Forget action movies, if your opponent has a cutting weapon, you need a weapon too.

It's generally difficult for most people to effectively protect themselves against a knife attack. Krav Maga, for instance, instructs individuals to utilize objects like chairs as a barrier between themselves and the attacker, but if these options aren't available and escape isn't possible, the situation can become quite dire. This video certainly served as a stark reminder of these realities.

I wanted to know whether the cylinder could've been used more effectively. Seems no one tried to ascertain its weight before the round started. If it's light enough to lift it's basically a chair, and if not, you could still try to hug it and pivot your body around it.

  • @eliasvonbrille

If you have a hard wooden chair the attacker with a Knife is probably fcked. Knifes are dangerous weapons but hard chairs (especially older ones) have at least 3 times the range and kill with one good blow. A full swing to the head kills instantly and even if they block halfway with the arms you can be sure they don't stab you no more. Everyday objective are very underestimated. If you have nothing don't even try but when you got a chair or smth at hand the fight becomes equal if not in your favour very fast. Attackers and defenders probably forget this all the time. When you are getting attack by a burgler with a Knife you probably don't need to run to the kitchen to arm yourself. Your house will likely be full with very powerful weapons.

That's a very bold claim. I am not talking about arming yourself mid combat. I am talking about arming yourself once you detected the burglar. Grabbing a chair is usually simply faster and more effective than grabbing a Knife. Obviously depending where you are and if you don't detect a murder at all until they stand next to you you are dead either way but it's good to keep in mind that chairs can be the better option than Knifes which ppl in my experience usually forget.

All this is why I’ve started learning Kali . It is a weapons based martial art; predominantly with edged weapons. I enjoyed the sport of fencing as a teenager for about seven years, and take from it now some of the footwork, tactics, and strategy. But even though, you have to be able to identify that you’re going to be attacked and react. Even if you’re armed too, if you’re behind the power curve you get stuck too.

I saw a former special forces operator who explained that in such a situation you have to block the first knife blow with your forearm, at the same time moving your butt backwards, increasing the distance of the knife from the important organs and at the same time when you block with the other hand you go all in and hope that you knock out the attacker before he lands a second knife blow. But the best defense against a knife-wielding attacker is a few bullets to the chest and moving backwards

You actually can't do that, because a free arm can pull off and strike from any direction, and if you go in you will get stabbed in kidneys and wherever. That's what Icy Mike tried to do and did well. He still died. The only reasonably solid way is to somehow get under the arm like in a throw, but you risk everything if you fail this. Locking the arm to the body is likely to fail too. So strikes and keeping distance if possible is superior. Ignore the knife (you can't block it really), strike to take out the attacker as best as you can. If they do shoot in, you better move fast and grapple (to throw or lock) not wrestle. Do *NOT* shoot in. Let the attacker try to shoot in and miss, and eat more strikes or get offbalanced and pulled or thrown. If you get good at it, the attacker will end up on the floor and you're standing. Grind them to dead from there. Do *NOT* let the attacker grab you or successfully shoot in. Do dodge, do use footwork to get off the line, do strike to keep distance or knock out and do throw where it's safe (e.g. after dodging a shot). Knife defense is really different from fistfighting, closer to fencing.

The only criticism I can think of for this is that the guys were trying to avoid properly hurting their attackers. If anything, this tells us that keeping the guy with the knife as far away as possible is critical so going for a one-hit knock out is all or nothing (roundhouse/uppercut to the head or a strike to break a leg or arm) but probably your "best" chance. I love that this really does demonstrate that an aggressive guy with a knife is just not to be messed with and the idea of trying to take the knife out of his hands will more or less guarantee you getting stabbed.

Also, the lower region of ribs lie the costal arteries. Cuts on there make you bleed heavily even without injuring the lungs directly.

If anything, a person with a knife would be even more dangerous in a real fight than than demonstrated here as they've only accounted for stabbing action. A person with knife will generally have longer reach than you so even if you can keep them a distance they're just going to cut up your arms. Same if you try to hold their knife wielding arm as some guys did here since that doesn't really prevent them from moving their wrist, which is enough to slice through your tendons.
