Sweet Briar Farm

Sweet Briar Farm

We are the biggest little farm in Central Northern Michigan. We farm every square inch of our 6 acres. Producers of seasonal produce, raw honey, and livestock. Our livestock include Dexter Cattle, a Jersey Cow, Registered Dairy goats, and Heritage Pigs.

The heart of our farm now revolves around our Dexter cattle. If you get one you will want more. Our goal for our cattle is to breed quality offspring with A2/A2 milk genetics and polled. We intend to sell halter and lead broke cattle to fellow homesteaders, to be utilized as family milk cows and quality bull calves to be used as herd sires.

Our registered Dairy goats include Nubians and Nigerian Dwarfs.

Nothing wrong with dry lotting cattle. Have a sacrifice/ dry lot and feed hay while resting your grass.

Yeah the Nigerian dwarf bucklings start acting like bucks very young. The doelings can’t get pregnant until they’re older than this and none of the kids seem to mind the attention. We usually separate the ND bucklings at 6 weeks old but even then it’s pushing them to wean so early.

Do you have bulls in your heard at all times? And do you find them to have a bit more of an heir of unpredictability than the girls? We had a heard of angus growing up and the bulls always made me a little nervous. I brought my 2 year old into the pasture to see the cows this last Christmas and one of the bulls randomly got a bit aggressive which I have never experienced in 15 years having them on my parents farm. So I am curious, looking into some smaller breeds for our own farms that would be a bit more manageable for kids to grow up with and raise! Appreciate any insight.

If you get a Dexter Bull that has been trained and handled from a young age they are easy keepers. But a bull is a bull and you can never 100% trust them. In general I prefer working with bulls than some of the cows. -Mike

The Vevor is junk if you use it a lot, which I did. The physics of the unit is quite good, especially after watching the videos on Minneer, which looks identical, but the lousy english translation is vexxing. All the wetted parts are stainless, so it is as advertised. After experiementing the cream screw I could make any cream I wanted. HOWEVER, once the warranty ran out, the machine went belly up. The problem was that the filter/motor assembly lost its alignment. The motor would drop so low the skim and cream vents from the filter no longer aligned with their trays. Customer service stank. I was constantly harased to make a video of the machine not working. A still picture would have been fine since nothing would move. Since they would never give me a person to talk to, I figured it was AI or they wanted to be so difficult I would tire of trying to get the machine repaired. I finally gave up, and I was glad I had spent less than $200 for lousy machine. Reliability is it main problem and their lousy customer service it the other. The current machine lacks all the early issues. Potentially, if they fix all the problems, it would be the best deal on the market. The other problem the machine has is its two-piece float, which you must separate to get trapped milk out of the float. Why they did not use a one-piece design is beyond me since it is a constant threat to hygiene and cleanliness of the system.
