Milk Training a Dexter Cow: Is it Worth it?

Jolleen is a first time freshener Dexter cow. She is halter trained and mostly lead trained. In this video we summarize what we did to get to this point and then get Jo back on the milk machine one last time before this collaboration video needed to be buttoned up! How much milk will Jo give us??!
Jolleen is homozygous polled and carries A2/A2 milk proteins.

About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.

I'm in Alabama with 7 head. A bull, steer, 4 bred heifers, and 1 yearling. I'm just starting and I am learning a lot from your videos.

Good video. When I was a young boy our neighbor had a jersey cow and they would give us mike a couple times a week. It was great wish I lived closer. Lol

We have one jersey that should be our milk cow. She was a bottle calf so she is super friendly. Dramatic but friendly 😄

I have been a long-time follower of both you and Pete at "Just A Few Acres Farm" and I find it interesting that both of you have decided to quit breeding pigs.

Just a coincidence. From the last I watched of Pete they were scaling back since they are getting older, I didn’t know they were no longer going to breed pigs. We are getting out of the pigs since we would like to leave the farm for a vacation and not have to worry about whether or not the animals have been cared for. Reliable help is hard to find. With the goats and cattle auto waterers and round bales of hay only requires someone to check on the animals rather than do chores daily.

What are your thoughts on crossing a mini-jersey bull with a dexter heifer with hopes of an offspring that produces more milk and is easier to milk?

We have a mid size jersey we bred to our Dexter Bull. Offspring of that cross are called belfairs. The cross is done for exactly the reason you mention. I believe we talk about it in this video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4CDppR_mJS5lrw.htmlsi=AZC7rJJ0iQu3Jle3

❤🎉 Interesting video. How do you know how much milk to take from the Dexter cow so she still has enough for her calf?? Does the calf drink at different times during the day than you milk the momma?? Animals are cool!! 😍♥️😊😁🇺🇸⭐🐄

Great question! Once the calves are 2 weeks old they can be separated at night from mom. We’d milk mom in the morning and then they spend the rest of the day together. It’s called calf sharing and it’s great for our family. I don’t need gallons a day so we can only milk when we need to by sharing with the calf.
