About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a Small Farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs.
Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers.
In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubian, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: Hereford

Big changes for 2024 😊 the biggest coming soon. Down sizing is good with all you have on your plate. You both are so busy rest and relax as much as you can. March will be here before you know it.

I wish I could keep bees, I live on .36 acre lot here in town and don't have enough space for cows and pigs but we do have 4 chickens and 4 more coming this spring. Watching farm/homestead videos like yours and others really got me thinking about doing something with my bit of land. 5 years ago I started collecting fruit trees, mostly apple trees, when I ran out of space I learned how to and I started grafting old heirloom apples varieties to my existing trees. (Its like Pokemon, I gotta collect them all) I currently have 9 apple trees and this spring I will be up to 22 different types/flavors of apples. My focus is on apples but 2 years ago I did make a frankenstien apricot tree (2 different apricots, 2 pluots, and 2 asian plums) and this spring im gonna frankinstien my euro plum tree to have 3 additional varieties. I've got no idea what im gonna do with all the fruit, Im thinking of juice, cider, wines and if all else fails I will flood my work with fruit! At this point its like obsessive compulsion, im always looking for old tyme apple varieties and if I don't like them I can always cut that branch off and try another flavor.

That’s really a smart idea to graft the different varieties of fruits on your lot. I had a co-worker live in the city and keep bees on his lot. If you have a solid fence in front of their entrance they are forced to fly up then out to forage so they aren’t flying into people in their path. They would be good for your fruit tree pollination😄

Looking forward to watching and learning from you this year. I myself am building 2 Top Bar hives and a couple swarm traps. Hopefully catch some swarms this early Spring. 1st time beekeeper. Wanted some pigs, and chickens but zoned Res... Township said I can have all the rabbits I want lol.... Only allowed 8 chickens and that seems not worth the investment to get started. Oh well bees it is and they have to be registered. Wishing you all the best in 2024. Deb

Good luck to you too! Bees can be very productive. 8 laying hens should just about meet the egg consumption of 4 people if that helps.

🤔Training a cow is easy… 😂 Me thinks that’s akin to saying a thing is as easy as herding cats 🤣. … and heifers taste good too, don’t ya know 😉
