About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubian, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: Registered Kune Kune and Hereford.

Great Video about Dexters! Yes, Pete is an inspiration to all of us homestead farmers. Thanks for sharing!! We are just getting started and making KZread videos to share our journey!! You need to spend some of those YT proceeds on getting Mike a new coat...lol! 😂

Hi … watching as many of your Dexter videos as I can! My husband has approved a small Dexter herd for me ….. we are on 4.3 acres and raise KuneKune pigs already … I believe we have 1.5 acres fenced and wonder if a trio would be ok on that? Do I need to barn them in the winter or would a shed in the pasture be ok…. I’m in SW Ontario, so similar winters to Michigan in the Lansing Mi area

They would do fine. You would just have to buy in hay like we do. The important thing for weather is a wind block. For young calves (like our new born calf) they do best with a 3 sided shed to stay out of the elements. Our cows usually hunker down in a patch of pine trees we have but often just find a place to plop down out of the wind.

Am I wrong in saying that it seems like the original Dexter is a different animal than what everyone these days are breeding for? The original Dexter’s were a higher percentage of horned weren’t they? Art you still looking to keep a trypurpose animal?

We are breeding for the dual purpose of meat and milk. Dexters are traditionally horned and the polled genetics are derived from a bull Salitare Platinum back in the 80s I believe. The origins of the polled genetics are debated and one we don’t care to dive into. Breeders breed for the traits that they favor. Our friends at Two men and a Hen farm for example breed horned dexters. We have nothing against what others are doing, we choose to breed polled. Certainly the breed has changed over generations certain genetic lines are beefier than others.
