    I love Daft Punk's Discovery, I wouldn't put it as high as they put it here, but it's some of the best electronic ever done. "Face to Face" is maybe the greatest use of sampling ever. Proof to anyone who says sampling is only "just copying" and not innovating. I do like "one more time" as an opener, it's repetitive lyrically but the kind of glitched out horn section in the back is such a unique texture and its really dancable. "Digital Love" too is fantastic, verdis quo is beautiful. "Harder better faster stronger" is maybe the most famous dance track of all time, for good reason. "Something about us" is another fantastic track. I think im going to just start listing every song on the album. Every song on Discovery is so well produced in that there's so many unique interesting sounds in every part of the album, just listening to the album with headphones again and again I always catch new details. Also balancing that with hooks and great songwriting that you could play in a club and start a party too, I think it's such a triumph. I do think 30 is a little high though, there's a part in the middle where all the songs are just good and not great and that bumps it down. Let's just say, "Daft Punk is playing in my house".

    Big Tull fan from a long-ago Xmas when I was gifted the AQUALUNG lp. Sadly, after a long relationship, I bailed after the double-live BURSTING OUT. Last year, a friend talked me into A and I was glad he did. A surprisingly strong album though it's a pity that Anderson couldn't have started his solo career here. Recently, I picked up the expanded CD of BROADSWORD AND THE BEAST and was, again, happily surprised. Although not every song is a banger (I would drop "Seal Driver" for one of the better bonus tracks). In both cases, the embrace of electronics to compliment the guitar/flute Tull sound is refreshing. Anderson is still in good voice and is still writing some perceptive songs. Enjoying this ranking very much, Shaggy!

    Thanks for your video series like these ... always interesting perspectives ... re Under Wraps .... needs to be re-mixed with proper drums to bring out the quality of the tracks ... Ian has said that he did not think there would be a return for the cost to do this ... maybe if he did a crowd-funding of this he would be surprised to find that the Tull fan base would "Stand Up" 'cause of their love of the band .... a set with a re-mix with the new drums added, re-master of the original plus a full set of the concert(s) done at the time touring the album (there were great shows at the time and the Under Wraps material works great live) would definitely sell ... I'd be up for that to add to the ever growing collection .... the rest of '80's Tull works for me - especially Broadsword (love it ... and so many superb outakes that did not make the album), "A" and Crest of a Knave (sure it's Dire Straits-y but that works for me) .... Cool video once again, CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland (p.s. saw Tull in Aberdeen 3 months back ... really great night, good set list, current band in great form - lots of energy and Ian's vocals were perfectly fine .... no issues from my perspective ... would buy a live release of tour if one materialises in due course)

    I messed up on the Asia timeline (see comment below). I could have sworn that their debut album came out when I was 10 or 11. Regardless, the Asia vibe must have been in the air because I do hear Asia vibes on BATB. Anyway…oops.

  • @michaelpdawson
    @michaelpdawsonКүн бұрын

    Under Wraps was alarming when it came out because it was such a non-Jethro Tull sound. But over the years I have come around to the opinion that it is Tull's BEST album of the '80s. Certainly their most daring and experimental. Great songs, and a cool vibe in the lyrical themes of international tension and intrigue. (I could really do without all the songs about the older Ian leching after young girls that we started getting on the subsequent albums.) And Ian's vocal approach on Under Wraps is so bizarre and wonderful, all those weird yips and grunts...I have no idea why he chose to do that, but I love it. Your timeline is off regarding Asia--their first album actually came out at exactly the same time as Broadsword and the Beast, so it couldn't have been an influence. I just listened to Crest of a Knave a week or two ago for the first time in ages and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. (Always loved "Budapest" despite what I just said about songs about Ian lusting after sweet young things.) Rock Island is just awful, down at the bottom of the barrel along with Catfish Rising. Only "Whaler's Dues" and "Strange Avenues" save that one.

    Nice to hear nice words about "A" - so many ditches this album with "Under Wraps" - which is totally unfair. Its probably their last masterpiece for me (Broadsword is almost a masterpiece, but TOO many outtakes around from that period)

    I have been a Beefheart fan for 35 years now, I own all his records and many bootlegs, have read all there is to read about the man, watched all movies and youtube videos ... I remain bewildered at the equivocal enthusiasm about Trout Mask Replica. I understand why it sparks people's interest. It's one of the weirdest albums by an established artist ever. I give it a yearly turn on the table, so I have listened to it 30 times or more. But to this date I can't convince myself it's actually a *good* album, let alone a great one. It's one of my least favorite albums by my favorite artist. It's not that it's inaccessible and takes time to appreciate. I did that with "Lick my decals ..." or "Ice cream ..." or other hard to get ones. Sure there are some interesting polyrhythms and Moonlight on Vermont is a great song - not coincidentally it dates from the Strictly Personal era. No, it's simply awful by design, or rather, by neglect. If you read John French's biography, much of the myth about this album is busted. French did an amazing job transcribing Beefheart's visions into music, but later on Beefheart ruined most of what the band had conceived with his tenor sax improvisations and overly loud singing or talking across the tracks. Almost the same happened on "Lick my decals ..." where Harkleroad was the transcriber at his service, but here Beefheart was more restrained in his "post production". Still, if you listen to the bootleg of "Lick my decals ..." before Beefheart did his thing, you get the real congeniality. Beefheart is an "idiot savant" rather than a genius. Throughout his career he has always needed real musicians to bring out the best in him. Whenever he allows true producers to take the lead, like Ry Cooder on his debut album, Ted Templeman on Clear Spot, or later on Gary Lucas, the strengths of his originality and their musicianship combine. When he assumes full control, like on TMR, the result is an unlistenable mess. Now that's my take at it. If people really truly like it, I envy them because I can't.

    Your reviews are like others that I’ve viewed, but appreciate you’re (re)rating and replacement as good additions. I have given this and other lists way to much thinking, and “of course” sharing… because I’m 67 and quickly becoming an old man. Observations. 1: I don’t believe it’s possible to create a top 100, as it’s totally subjective. For instance a very good case could be made for Judy at Carnegie Hall. 2: People and music are of it’s time. Abby Road & and the White album are both great records, likely (or maybe not), no Soft Machine without Revolution 9. Also, I’ll never listen to Beyonce as often than I did Sticky Fingers (mostly technology since to listen to certain music you had to buy the album instead of streaming. 3: Who says a list should limit to only one or 2 of an artist. For an example, I love Kind of Blue, but it’s almost easy listening compare to Bitches Brew which should be added just to puss off Marsalis (poser)… So my proposal is to list what are in your opinion the most important albums ever. No numbering (i like chaos). The good thing that happened here, is the Apple 100 shows how much things have changed, and old white mens opinions (me) don’t carry more weight than others. Again its just an impossible task. Hope you add When the Pawn & Hot Rats. Keep up the good work!

    Wow! I didn't think I'd ever see a discussion of Flo & Eddie albums. I have all 5 of them and my ranking wouldn't be much different than the Hippie's. "Rock Steady" is an obvious #5. Totally unnecessary. The other 4 albums are all pretty close in quality in my opinion. I'd probably put "Illegal" at #4 just because its more of a comedy album and at times, a very good one. But, for repeated plays I'm looking more for the melodic rock that the Turtles were so good at. With Flo & Eddie you get a lot of good melodic rock on the top 3 albums, but with more of an edge than most of the Turtles songs. As good as the first two albums were (especially the first) I still find myself listening more to "Moving Targets" which I've always had a soft spot for. It does include what I consider their greatest song in "Keep It Warm" and all the other songs are very listenable. I always thought the line in "Keep It Warm" referring to shooting kids from a tower was more a reference to the Kent State shooting incident in 1970. I think all the other songs are very good. My second favorite song is "Moving Targets" which interestingly wasn't one that impressed the Hippie much. It's one of the harder rocking songs in the Flo & Eddie discography and it has a really cool segue during the second half where the melody shifts keys into an entirely different direction. My only negative is I think the guitar is too low in the mix during that section. I'd be curious what anyone exploring Flo & Eddie for the first time thinks about this song and the album as a whole.

    I'm really enjoying your takes on the chart. The quality you have that others don't is that you have an open mind There are others out there that are literally 'I've never heard of them - next' or 'What is this rap album/female singer/ doing on the list' The attitude of 'If it ain't a guy and a guitar it's crap' disgusts me. Keep flying the flag for being open to new things - Loving all your work Shaggy

    Yeah, lots of jamming PLUS the only known North American performance of "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" (every known subsequent performance of it took place in UK and Europe) and the only known 60s performance in listenable sound quality (as the other two 60s versions are on poor sounding tapes). And, given that Ray Collins is there to do the vocal heavy-lifting, FZ actually contributes guitar to a slightly larger extent as opposed to that instrument being almost completely absent from the remaining two 60s versions or the 1973 Road Tapes 2 arrangement (not counting the TTR version, as by that time FZ had pretty much outsourced a lot of his guitar duties to others, like Warren on the 1979 tour). And I guess "Brown Shoes Shuffle" means this was the only time "BSDMI" led to some actual improv after the fact. Maybe not a proper monster song, but cool to hear nonetheless. It does sound like Don Preston is playing clavinet at the start of "The Whip". Apparently he generally used Fender Rhodes for the 1968 US/Canada gigs and also some kind of an organ (and clavinet on the Whisky gig) but switched over to RMI Electra-Piano as a substitute for both organ and electric piano for the '68 European tour, FZ' liner notes for AOTT suggest that this was done for practical/portability reasons. As for "chouflee", no idea what that means, maybe that was just a pseudo-French perversion on "shuffle"? It certainly looks like the list of releases after FZ passed away is now slightly longer than the list of official albums FZ managed to get out in his lifetime. I certainly think it's a very interesting 60s MOI show, but who knows why FZ released just barely two minutes of it in his lifetime. But then, FZ' priorities as to what live recordings (and what bands) counted as releasable shifted constantly as time went on. Like as recently as early 80s he was still mixing the Petit Wazoo stuff, but NONE of it ended on the YCDTOSA series. I'm certainly glad that all sorts of gaps have been filled nowadays, but others think that "Oh, there's a reason why FZ released little to nothing from this band or this gig" just because FZ curated all too carefully what counts as releasable and therefore it causes some FZ fans to cling to a narrative that any live gig or live band showcased on posthumous releases must be worthless or only a historical curio. But something like this Whisky performance is just way too interesting to be written off as wholly unreleasable.

Very different than their early 2 track stuff, but Safe, Sunday Jam, All Gates Open, most of the rest of it - just excellent.
