Joe Travers and the ZFT have been absolutely killing it the last couple years with these great releases. Can't wait to see what comes next!

Apparently Tom Fowler just passed away. An absolute legend in the Zappa universe. R.I.P. Tom.

Absolutely loved this release, just when I think they can't knock another one out off the park they prove me wrong.

Yeah, lots of jamming PLUS the only known North American performance of "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" (every known subsequent performance of it took place in UK and Europe) and the only known 60s performance in listenable sound quality (as the other two 60s versions are on poor sounding tapes). And, given that Ray Collins is there to do the vocal heavy-lifting, FZ actually contributes guitar to a slightly larger extent as opposed to that instrument being almost completely absent from the remaining two 60s versions or the 1973 Road Tapes 2 arrangement (not counting the TTR version, as by that time FZ had pretty much outsourced a lot of his guitar duties to others, like Warren on the 1979 tour). And I guess "Brown Shoes Shuffle" means this was the only time "BSDMI" led to some actual improv after the fact. Maybe not a proper monster song, but cool to hear nonetheless. It does sound like Don Preston is playing clavinet at the start of "The Whip". Apparently he generally used Fender Rhodes for the 1968 US/Canada gigs and also some kind of an organ (and clavinet on the Whisky gig) but switched over to RMI Electra-Piano as a substitute for both organ and electric piano for the '68 European tour, FZ' liner notes for AOTT suggest that this was done for practical/portability reasons. As for "chouflee", no idea what that means, maybe that was just a pseudo-French perversion on "shuffle"? It certainly looks like the list of releases after FZ passed away is now slightly longer than the list of official albums FZ managed to get out in his lifetime. I certainly think it's a very interesting 60s MOI show, but who knows why FZ released just barely two minutes of it in his lifetime. But then, FZ' priorities as to what live recordings (and what bands) counted as releasable shifted constantly as time went on. Like as recently as early 80s he was still mixing the Petit Wazoo stuff, but NONE of it ended on the YCDTOSA series. I'm certainly glad that all sorts of gaps have been filled nowadays, but others think that "Oh, there's a reason why FZ released little to nothing from this band or this gig" just because FZ curated all too carefully what counts as releasable and therefore it causes some FZ fans to cling to a narrative that any live gig or live band showcased on posthumous releases must be worthless or only a historical curio. But something like this Whisky performance is just way too interesting to be written off as wholly unreleasable.

Always wanted to get a recording of the original Garrick Theatre run, so anything else that is close is essential. Great audio sound too

I believe this is the earliest release-able live recording in the vault. I saw that somewhere. Hope I am wrong, would love a Garrick theatre show, would love a Copenhagen 1967 release (with "Ian Underwood whips it out")

Wasn’t John Mayall living in Laurel Canyon at that time? And he wrote 2401 about Frank and probably a whole bunch of the people in that audience
