Brisa Marie - Future PhD

Brisa Marie - Future PhD

I'm Brisa Marie and I have a PhD in Culture and Performance (CAP) from UCLA's World Arts and Cultures/Dance Department. I spent my whole life dreaming about getting a PhD and I tried my very best to prepare for grad school. Unfortunately, I realized somethings are HARD TO PREPARE for, ESPECIALLY if you don't know where to start, are the first person in your family to pursue higher education, and are a student from historically marginalized populations. I wanted so bad to be a doctor and luckily, I had a strong support system, a family that loved me, and a lot of privilege to figure things out the long and hard way. Some of us aren't as lucky. As a result of this reality, I wanted to make a resource that helps people get into grad school, find grad advice once they're there, learn more about graduate life, and how to do research. This channel answers questions that demystify what is graduate school while giving my advice on how to thrive as a graduate student at any stage!

It's A LOT but I now have a lot more free time so definitely feel disoriented or "disregulated" without my normal routine lol. It's nice to know that it's not out of the norm.

    how do you deal with gaslighting in the academia and toxic hierarchical research. If graduated students have a Stockholm Syndrome for appeasing culture, should you also receive such kind of culture if your not accustomed to such with your personal standards or morals of what educators should be. How to address this in academic settings who are fond of traumatizing learners for what they call standards.

  • @BrisaMarie
    @BrisaMarie6 күн бұрын

    Academia can be toxic and gaslighting is real!! i think you are asking a lot of questions that are important but have many different answers. For me I try to separate myself form people that I think are mentally harmful. This sometimes has the consequence that things may be more difficult later in the future but to me its worth it. For others it may not be. I also noticed when you find a community of people who are not toxic it can actually make things easier so again to me its worth ditching the toxic people and replacing them with non-toxic people even if it is my advisor! i have a video that talks about how I suggest people handle switching their advisors and responding to toxicness but it may not be the best answer for you! Please always trust your gut! Heres the video! kzread.info/dash/bejne/oGht2c-Plty2m6Q.htmlsi=ocvcCqh5XjCORaen

    Specialized programs are undergrad or grad? I mean like certificates for around 2 months...

  • @BrisaMarie
    @BrisaMarie6 күн бұрын

    Hi! so it depends, but in general they are kind of their own thing. So if harvard has a specialized certificate in diversity leadership or business after the 2-3 months you will have that certification but it wouldn't be the same as a degree. That doesn't mean they are unimportant because they can really be helpful with getting raises or switching fields. But they just aren't accredited in the same way degrees are!

    Hi Brisa :) I have a question about "Hidden Curriculum." For example in the Phd in Culture&Perf the handbook says only 4 core classes (200, 201, 202, 204). What's the hidden curriculum? Do they make you take electives you don't want to take? Do they kind of choose which classes you take or do you have full control over which classes you take? Which electives do they make you take?

  • @BrisaMarie
    @BrisaMarie6 күн бұрын

    Hi! Thank you for being patient with me. So a hidden curriculum more times than not describes things that are about the department/university's culture or personalities and not actual classes. As for WACD the only classes you have to take are the ones you already identified. From there it is all about what makes you happy! Which is nice. I took mostly art history courses while I was there! So you really do have free range! A better example of a hidden curriculum is : as a student you are not required to publish to graduate and there aren't any resources in the department to tell you how to publish or to support your publication process. However, a department gives more money to students who do publish but you wouldnt know that until someone tells you. so that would be more of an example of a hidden curriculum. Because its technically not required... but really does impact your success!

  • @BrisaMarie

    Hi! So every school is different. Some may have a more formal process and maybe in that case it probably depends on that process. Some departments guarentee a TA-ship the moment you get on campus... other dont lol. But I didn't techincally apply. What I did was informally email different people to see if I could secure a TA-ship once I got onto campus. And it luckily worked out for me and I was able to get hired because I was reaching out to the people in charge of the class I wanted to teach. I think being proactive can never hurt, but it technically doesn't always work.

    Totally hear and feel this! I came into my PhD *not* thinking I would pursue academia, but I've more recently started to appreciate some of the affordances of being a professor and being "supported" by the resources of a university. I feel like I'm really at a fork in the road where I see both directions being full of possibilities, and whether I'm leaning one way or the other really changes the questions I ask, the experiences and skills I try to develop, the work and relationships I prioritize. I LOVE the way you ended this conversation thinking about possibilities. There are countless ways to do the work we want to do in the world, we just have to be bold enough to imagine and enact those ways.

Other require you to apply outside of the univeristy) Here is a video on how I find grants, but it will be slightly different for your since you are in a MBA program : kzread.info/dash/bejne/oX5owaxxlMnAYZs.htmlsi=0iBNEFsPNfQSyVet

    Hi, I need some assistance from you. So I applied for the Unsubsidized loan and my college received it but is yet to confirm the amount of aid to be provided, the maximum loan that I can get from it is $20,500. However, my program costs around $59,000 for 1 academic year. Since it's not enough, should I apply for the grad plus loan requesting $38,500?. Also, when should I apply for a grad plus loan? after my university notifies me regarding the aid provided via Unsubsidized? or can I apply right away?

  • @BrisaMarie
    @BrisaMarie28 күн бұрын

    Hi! So I can't give financial advice because I am not a financial expert and every circumstance is different. Plus each school has its own requirements and policies. But I can tell you what I did and what some options may be. I requested all the loans I could my first year just to make sure I had enough money. THEN after my semester started and I had a TAship and a job I was able to retroactively reduce my loans to only EXACTLY what I need. So in that way I didn't have to take all the loans I asked for and my loan amount was able to decrease. But had I needed it, I would have had access to the maximum amount. I think when in doubt it is alway best to speak directly with the financial aid people at your institution but that was how I handled it. I hope that was helpful.

    Wow! You are really doing such a great job thinking ahead! Its okay that you don't know many independent scholars yet. You are still very early in your journey! And honestly they are very hard to find, or I wouldn't have asked for help in this video (ahhaha). I am so happy that his channel is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions about anything! I am so happy you are a part of this community!

    I had a similar reaction. The way these institutions are treating students has really made me rethink my future some. I’m still moving forward with my phd but being in academia has really removed itself from post doc life

    Valid! I love that you are still moving forward with your education as a PhD but are brave enough to consider other pathways... as you see I am still very much grappling with that but your resolve is inspiring! Thank you for commenting!
