    Congrats!!! I love that you're giving yourself grace to feel how you feel and space to reflect on how you feel. It's a good example of things not having to be done or experienced just one way in life and that should be represented!! It instantly reminded me of something an admin said at our orientation last week, "Do I want to finish quickly or do you want to finish well - academically, mentally, and financially? What does that look like for me?" I feel some similarities to what you discussed because your journey looks different from others and that's okay!! goodness I always feel so inspired after watching your videos

    Hi!! and YES i love that quote you shared.. "finishing well" is not often talked about and sooo many people leave grad school burnt out or with trauma! I am very relieved that I am done... but also this youtube community really created a space for me to also make sure I am "finishing well!" Thank you for your encouragement and wise words! I am so glad that we are in this thing together lol. Thank you thank you thank you!

    @@BrisaMarie Ma’am! I had to come back and say, “Thank You!” I used your tips from another video for my AB and whew! They were so helpful. What I’m having to get used to is the fact that this journey is almost too solo. Professors ask for annotated bibs but never say how, etc. Oh well. I got this. Lol. Thanks again, Pretty Girl. I went through that while studying for my Executive MBA 30 years after getting my BA from the same HBCU school. It didn't sink in that it was all over and I did it until the next semester and I didn't have anymore classes to take! Lol! Congrats! Watching this journey even as a new viewer has been amazing. You’ve worked BEYOND hard, I hope you know we’re proud. Regarding dissertation questions, how long do they typically take and is there a page requirement that researchers are expected to follow? I always see formats such as, 2 years for coursework and 2 years for your dissertation. Yet don’t exactly know what a mapping looks like especially since not all PhD are finished in four years.

    Oh my goodness!! my heart!! Thank you for such kind and encouraging words!! as for your questions: Dissertations vary depending on field, some people can write a dissertation in as little as few months while others can take upwards 5 years or even more. They are really individualized, but on average people are expected to write a dissertation between 1-3 years. But again, there are also exceptions, Dissertations do not have a standardized page requirement. Each dissertation is defined by the student and their committee so there are a lot variation. My dissertation would be considered rather short as it is about 140 pages. Some dissertations can be 500 pages... Though most people average about 200-300 pages. I do have a couple videos that might help illuminate what my process/UCLA culture & Performance phd looks like. here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qauby69-YrSpn7Q.htmlsi=yXt8XU9wEi_1AzFD I also have another one that goes into more details about PhD basic/requirements in general that might be useful.. might not: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zq6Kupigaaqqnps.htmlsi=V2oj6XkhpGLRvXKc All of these videos can be found in this playlist where I talk about all the basics of PhDs and the process: kzread.info/head/PLY-K7nK2wQ2Xb4enQnPjnR8MrFpZ8sEiu Hopefully that helps!!!! Thank you again for taking the time to comment such kind words!

    Hi Brisa!! Congratulations on almost completing your dissertation. Now, I have a problem related to my thesis. Apparently, I was told to compose a portfolio instead of a thesis for my degree since it is cheaper and there is not a lot of faculty who can look at my work regarding disability studies. If I take this path, I wonder if the institution will judge me or see me as the lower student who cannot manage a Master's thesis. Is this all in my head or do you see this as a problem for future study? Please, let me know whenever you have the chance.

  • @BrisaMarie

    Hi! Thank you so much! As for your question, I don't think most schools will mind. I don't think admissions really harbors to much on your master's thesis or degree. In most cases they will review them to see if they meet their pre-reqs but not for admissions but rather after you get accepted. This way if the capstone isn't sufficient than they just make sure you earn another masters simultaneously with your phd! That was my experience any way. I used an undergraduate paper for my phd application (by the time I had applied i was not where near finished with my masters thesis). And no one actually ever read/looked at my masters thesis. So I wouldn't worry too much. And depending on what program you apply to they may even be excited about the portfolio as it brings about new perspectives! I hope that helps

    Currently dealing with burnout, so I decided to postpone my qualifying presentation to next year. It is what it is, but I'm mad because I've met absolutely *NONE* of my goals. Anyway, *I'm curious what your qualitative methods process was -- that is, how you went from collecting your data to analyzing it, and then writing up your results/ findings?*

  • @BrisaMarie

    @BrisaMarie

    11 ай бұрын

    That is totally understandable and relatable. Even though I know what I am about to say may not make any difference, I do think it is important to say, that while you may not have reached your academic goals, somewhere in you there was a goal to protect your emotional/mental/physical well being and honestly... that is literally the most important thing! We often don't consider those as real goals but SOOO many people put themselves in danger for these degrees and I think it is AMAZING and POWERFUL that you chose to protect yourself. And seeing how you haven't dropped out, I think the goal of eventually graduating is still being met lol so that (to me) is something worth celebrating.... As for my research... heres the thing before I got hurt i had a completely different project in mind but after I got hurt my focus had to shift. So in this video I talk a lot about my methods/methodologies ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZN8j6mbidC5cto.htmlsi=LlN78d6f7Ph4QhXl ) and I did rely a lot on them, but ultimately I did a lot of secondary source analysis, discourse analysis and visual anaylsis in my dissertation. Since i am in culture studies my dissertation doesn't follow the formulaic format where theres a lit review, methods, findings, etc.... it was more like a long analytical essay lol where the chapters are related but tackle different specific issues. So yeah... that video goes into detail about my methods/methodological process.
