You've helped me so much on my journey. I started watching you while I was a masters student contemplating doing a PhD. Now I'm going into my second year of my doctorate. Halfway through my first year, I was asking my advisor how to speed this whole thing up, so I totally understand the need to get the hell out of grad school. I'm so proud of how far you've come, and I fully believe in your ability to get this done this year. I'm just a random grad student in upstate, NY, but I believe in you! 💟

I've been having such a hard time finishing my PhD, losing motivation in the very end of things and also not being able to find a job. I'm definitely out of funding (since May). And my mental health has been not great and I'm so over grad school (6 years in now). You are not alone! We will finish this damn thing!

Brisa- what I appreciate in this is that despite the minor setback, despite the disappointment, you’re able to keep your head held HIGH and your feet firmly on the ground that you’ve walked. You’ve had so many valid reasons to take your time and you’re unapologetic about it. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Too many times we think we have to rush through our experiences, there seems to be a timer on many things especially as women. Not only will you graduate in September but you will have 5000+ supporters irl and online cheering you on with full hearts bc you are THAT girl. You keep that head held high and don’t let that crown budge one bit. 💜

Keep your head up. I'm rooting for you. The same thing happened to me in my MFA program. On another note: I didn’t get accepted into the Ph.D. program at UC Merced. However, the good news is I have a few publishers interested in my autobiography. God is good.

Hi Brisa!!! Ukhhhhhhhh...I know the effects of life and what it does to us! We have a plan and think it will work out, in the end, but anything will get in the way. Whether it is health, wealth, or life, we will get to that end. The fact that we made it this far shows our strengths. Not getting the funding to help with academics, difficulty finding scholarships, working multiple jobs, getting injured takes time away from the end goal. However, if it takes a day, month, year, or later, we will get to the end. Do not stop and fight, academically, for your seat in commencement!!!!! You'll get there!

Hey, so you may remember that as someone on the spectrum, I asked you for reading advice last year. Anyway, last semester I had to get two incompletes because of mental health reasons, and then take a few extra weeks to finish everything. I managed to finish, get the incompletes off my transcripts, and still get all As and Bs. I also had to take an extra year to finish my Bachelor’s in undergrad, and I might need an extra semester to finish my two year Master’s program. Recently, I’ve been thinking about rushing to finish my Master’s in two years, but hearing about how you’re taking extra time to finish your PhD reminded me that there’s nothing wrong with taking a little longer, especially when it means prioritizing your wellbeing. Take heart in knowing that in being open about your “failures”, you’re still helping us.

I'm new to your channel and it's been so helpful. I am currently about to go back to school for my PhD again. It's been pretty tumultuous figuring things out.. I am leaving my full time job to go back. Honestly a PhD is a scary time in general. 5 years of .. basically uncertainty and "where am I gonna get this money". I am fully funded at my institution however as usual, it's never enough 😂 love your channel! Keep up the work that you do ♥️♥️ it will be all worth it. Also, did I peep that you are Afro American studies?? So am i!!! ❤❤

Please PLEASE PLEASE if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask! I will do my best to make sure I can support in the best way I know how!

Set spetember as your goal, but be free to allow for another year. Take your time. The rest of the working world will bludgeon you. It's okay to take another year even if not financially applicable. You'll have more time to get the job you want, or the post doc you want. You are a part of my global cohort and I'm sorry you are not graduating right now, but sometimes... sometimes... things work out better with more time. I know ucsd is hiring! But really, you just never know. Our lows can sometimes end up being our highs (though we rarely reflect on them as such). You are so smart, caring, and giving as a person that I know you will prosper despite timeliness. Hey, queer tinlme is never linear, nor complete at any turn. You got this! I'm rooting for you from ucsd!

THANK YOU GRACE!!! I won't! I promise!
Brisa, I'm sure you will meet your deadline in September this time and complete your study. I'm just curious about the stipends because some universities state that the stipends could cover your fifth year in case of extension. How come that wasn't the case with you? Also, how many pages will be the final version of your dissertation excluding references and appendices?
@BrisaMarie
Жыл бұрын
Hi!! Thank you for your encouragement Jason!! As for the stipends: For me I was never a fully funded PhD student. So I paid for my grad school in a bunch of different ways that changed each year. For the most part, I was a Teaching Assistant for multiple departments and that paid for my tuition and a gave me some living money. I earned two awards last year and they came with a year long fellowship that I used for the past 9 months. Unfortunately these stipends didn't cover the calendar year. Instead they only lasted an academic year. Since I didn't graduate in June, the money from these stipends just ran out. So that's why I have to work to finish my last 3 months or so. :D Thank you for asking
You WILL make it....TRUST in the Lord....He'll never leave you. You've got this.

I know you are disspointed but please don’t be. As long as you truly want it. You will find the financial means and the will to graduate. There is reason for your delayed graduation that is in God’s design. You can do this even if it takes another semester.
