Hi love! Thank you so much for the information, I just became a PhD candidate at UCR's department of anthropology. I study the politics of refusal through the subject of Black Queer DJs in Berlin! I needed this because I wasn't even sure where to start with my dissertation. I'm about to go into my fieldwork year and want to get ahead. Your channel has been a raw guide for me. The information you provide is priceless! I would love to connect with you!

Greetings! I can definately empathize with you! You will feel a weight lifted off of your shoulders after you complete your edits and defend. I know that I felt better after I officially graduated last month so I know you will feel better too! While I was writing my dissertation, I too was going through doubt and anxiety - whenever you are going to accomplish something great, that's when the pressure intensifies! You are going to finish and Congratulations in advance Dr! :-)

This is all such a mood. I'm at the revision, rewriting stage, and I feel like my time keeps getting longer rather than shorter. The non-standardized way is what's mainly held me back, alongside my attachment, hyperfixation difficulties, and keeping my mind locked on a certain position versus broadening my approach. As well, like someone points out below in an earlier comment, the later/newer stuff totally sticks out as writing gets better XD but we're all doing it! Hang in there!

Thanks so much for this. I'm a final year PhD candidate writing my thesis now who also manually references. No ref manager as I am a luddite. The thought of messing that up was too much to consider on top of all the other stuff. Appreciate you taking the time to do these videos.

Yes! I am glad that I have a fellow manual reference here!!! Sometimes technology can be more work than the old fashion way... at least for me when I don't know what I am doing hahah ... Thank you for taking the time to comment and share your experience!

I've found that editing the first chapter I ever wrote has been SO annoying because I've been improving my writing, so the later/newer stuff is much better and doesn't need as much editing. My advisor told me that people don't often talk about how much learning happens in the dissertation writing/editing process.

YESSS!!! It is soo wild to see how much our writing can change even just in a short amount of time! Honestly part of this "editing" is rewriting sections that seemed good at first, but now need a little love lol Thank you for sharing your experience Elena!! I totally feel it!

Man you said a mouth full of truths. I just started and because I was not informed at all and the ball was dropped on their end, I was not prepared. I am already stepping down to reevaluate continuing the program. I was at a disadvantage and set to fail from the beginning because I was never enrolled in the introductory course and they didn’t have an explanation in how I ended up in a full course that already required knowledge. I was doomed from the start.

I really resonate with your comment. I am so sorry this is your experience... but also... it really does reflect how I feel about my PhD program. I wish I had some "good" advice or something important to say to help, but I am just figuring it all out too... I guess... Its important that we remember... its not our fault and despite the sabotage and lack of support we can still be successful. That is a little reminder I have to keep for myself. So if you need it, I hope it helps! #InSolidarity

If you use MS Word, you can use the References tab to input your bibliography information and then it formats it for you - giving you a choice of formats. I discovered this recently and I wish I would have found it two years ago!!!

Hi Brisa! As a tutor in the Writing Center at my university, I would tell you to take some time and ask tutors at the UCLA writing center and ask for their understanding of the works cited format. Along with that, if you know of any professors in the writing discipline who might help, you could ask them for assistance and learn their way. However, as you said in a previous video, “writing is a style that may be seen as acceptable to some and erroneous to others.” All in all, I say that the better approach is to imitate the similarities in the citation format styles from various academics. In the end, it will be up to you to deduce what is acceptable in your format. Good luck with you dissertation!!!

I have found very few people (at thesis level) give you a heads up with "this is how it should go" it was very frustrating! Funny enough one of the major sources I used in my thesis now may be my advisor at the next level. I found listening to individuals like you who have been through the process is often far more informative. I was editing up until I hit the submit key on the computer. In fact I had to have a friend say "stop! submit it, stop going over it endlessly!" Grammerly is amazing! It calls me out often when I slip into passive voice. LOL I keep going back and adding comments to this because you keep hitting on issues that I face. Citations are the worst! It took me days to finish mine on my thesis! More difficult organizing the citations then writing the paper!

Hi Tim! thank you for being so patient with me!! That is sooo cool! Academia is a funny world where the people we study eventually end up being our mentors and colleagues. I am super excited to hear how that goes! HAHAH And i love that you are also a fellow grammarly lover! Its super helpful... ESPECIALLY at the buzzer moment! lol HAHAHA and thank you for affirm my dislike of citations... I get they are important but GOODNESS they are tedious! hhahaha Thank you for always commenting! I really appreciate you! Your comments always make me smile! Talk soon!
