    I found this video because I just inherited my grandfather JD 50. We used to brush hog the CRP field and always had a stash of shear pins. You could break on engaging the pto if you were not careful. These tractors were made for plowing not brushhogging, but it will work. Like you I have a lot of work to do restoring mine.

  • @flyboyslc1

    You are correct on the shear pin issue. We had not mowed those acres for,several years and there were lots of saplings, and sheared pins. I just keep a bunch in the toolbox. My grandfather had a 50 that he traded for the 60. He gave it to me in 1983 and it has been mine since. Next winter will be a bored block, intake manifold, and head work I am afraid. But it is worth it to me to leave it in good condition for the next owner.

    @@peterrobbins6691 that is in the vid as well. Drain plugs below rear axle, and starter motor. Fill through the gear shifter lever area. There are two pipe plugs on side of tractor to check fluid levels. You may need to use a small funnel to finish the fill through these two check points. When oil runs out of these two holes, tractor is full. Suggest you watch the vid again, closely.

    Perhaps I will. That tractor needs a lot of work, and I will be doing some work on it in the coming year. Cracked engine block, bottom side. So I’ll probably pull the block out and weld it. Hard to find used blocks anymore. Also a blown exhaust manifold gasket and a cracked intake manifold. So a lot of work to do. Amazing that it still runs well, but it does.

    Just liked & subscribed. We have several tractors. We have a 300 utility. a 350 row crop. Ours have the fast hitch. The 350 also has live PTO. We just sold the rear portion of a 350 to Andrew from Plane View Farms. He has a row crop 300 and intends to use the 350 componets to convert his 300 to a fast hitch- live PTO and TA.

    This 300 has live PTO and ta. I did not know that IH offered two PTO options? My jd60 could be bought either way. I much prefer keeping the machinery in motion rather than having it stop every time the tractor stops moving. Perhaps safer without the live pto? I know a few fellas that have tangled themselves up in their machinery. Never a good outcome.

    Well, several things to think about regarding your comment. Efficient use of PTO power is certainly one of them. However next field closer to the river and we have switchgrass about 3 feet high, very dense. Some of it has to be mowed in 2nd gear and that is all the tractor can handle, remembering that this 60 has about 35 pto horses available. Also, you can tell me better than I know what a bat wing mower will cost? I see used ones go for thousands of dollars. The old 6 foot bushog we paid $130 for 40 years ago. It is period correct for the old tractor, and that is what i am into now at my age. Farming like I did 50 years ago.

  • @aliassomebody8343
    @aliassomebody83438 ай бұрын

    Batwings can be fun, but people tend to overestimate these tractors PTO output there are few if any batwings designed to be used by a tractor rated under 40HP now @redgreentractorthings9043 is a gasoline variant so it probably has better compression and probably lingers at 35-39 HP on average while an All Fuel like mine is more in the range of 30-35. These old tractors where rated to the engine speed which fluctuates differently because tolerances in those days as well as a lack of computer machining meant things fluctuated between tractors of the same model only a dynamometer is a sure way to tell. All in all, I agree that using older pull rotary cutters is the best way to stay efficient with this thing.

    Nice rebuild RGTT! Your video's on rebuilds of both the starter and the clutch have been incredibly helpful to me as I have recently acquired my first Tractor which is a 1955 John Deere 60 much like yours, I bought at an auction of the last owner who sadly passed away a year ago and was unable to care for it due to a myriad of health issues even before that. Sadly, one problem with it was a hair line cracked PTO case which I was told happened when the old owner hit a bushhog PTO shaft before his health declined while backing up to couple, which of course led to water flooding the compartment over the time it's been sitting since, the only blessing with the situation is despite the water the oil kept the rust from solidifying into scale and some WD-40 and blue towels saw it clean as new inside. In any case, your video will help me greatly in my quest to rebuild my own don't be afraid to show us the sixty again!

  • @flyboyslc1

    Nice reply AS, Thanks for buying a 60 and keeping it going. We’re you able to find a replacement casting for the cracked case? If not, Muggy Weld makes some good welding products to repair cast iron. Look them up on KZread. My 60 has a cracked engine block on bottom of engine. A common problem with these tractors as they age. It leaks coolant. I will try Muggy Weld on it someday and hope to do a vid of that. Also I have a blown exhaust gasket that looks to be quite a difficult job, removing exhaust manifold bolts that have not been removed since tractor built. So I have work to do, but no time right now!

    @@flyboyslc1 Sorry for the late response but thanks for the reply! I have found a used housing cover on ebay which I purchased inexpensively, though I could have welded the old one in my experience cast iron is difficult to weld even for someone with experience welding pretty often. Actually, after bringing up the problem with cracked engines I looked on the bottom of mine and noticed the bottom texture towards one side of the engine which is covered in paint is lumped which may mean mine was cracked and epoxied up but admittedly I have no means to verify it without stripping it off and well provided it doesn't leak I probably won't get in a hurry to fix it before most everything else.

    I recently acquired a 1956 60 to restore for cheap and low and behold the PTO cover had a crack a quick unscrew of the oil drain revealed that the PTO was full of nothing but water! Luckily, we took it apart and while there was rust in there it luckily hadn't solidified, we blew out the rust with a pleasure washer before spraying diesel fuel and wd-40 into the housing. Currently I am trying to think of how I should proceed on either repairing or replacing the cast iron cover.
