I've got a 95 1200 and really liked the rounder styling, which first sold me on the bike. However, it's the amazing power delivery that's kept it in the fleet (I've had it now a bit over 20 years). Like the reviewer noted, it pulls like a locomotive and the power band starts way down low and never lets up. I highly recommend this bike if you can get one! Super sturdy, mechanically unbreakable, and the weight is nothing shocking if you've ridden anything older. As far as Sport Touring, I got a set of soft GIVI saddlebags and a Triumph tank/trunk bag combo that I can use if I'm going on a longer trip. But far and away the best thing about the bike is the power...I stepped the rear sprocket up just one tooth, and now its even more fun! I am no light-weight, but 145mph still comes up pretty quickly. This baby is basically a two wheel muscle car...its not going to keep up with focused sport bikes in the twisties, but I promise you'll love the off-the-rails pull...guaranteed to catch more than a few other liter bikes by surprise!

Terrible review, five minutes before you even start talking about the bike, then too much time on appearance and aesthetics, I have the bike, real issues with support, better if you can work on it yourself, difficult to get parts, not good on freeways, but I ride more local roads, great torque for rough roads, good price, especially now that you can pick it up used. Good for what it is, beginners should get a smaller bike.

i have an 08 and its great, best generation of these bikes. your tire pressure and suspension settings are wrong. they give you adjustments to make it good and I dont think its unreasonable to say you cant knock it withought spending some time adjusting. 32 psi is way way too low, its a heavy bike get them up into the low 40s and its transformed into a very nimble machine. I've got the settings perfect and i often take off the bags and run it in the canyons. trail breaking turns the front tire into a triangle profile fairly quickly compared to other bikes, but that's not a deal killer. i get better mileage than that, 37ish on long sporty rides. 58, 101, g16 going la to laguna seca, many 110+mph runs got that. tire pressure is propbibly makes that difference. buddy on my ktm 1290 gt in the same ride tracking the same speeds everywhere got the exact same amount of fuel at every stop so eh. That's just what a cable throttle feels like on a 4 cilender bike. its what a cramp buster was invented for. the cable throttle is also whats stopping them from doing cruise control. the bike has a ton of wind up its incredibly controllable, personal opinion but i dont think you need ride modes on a 4 cylinder bike. big twins yea ride modes help. as far as i see it you were running around with flat tires saying the mileage is bad and is sluggish to maneuver and from my seat like yea duh. some credentials i also own a ktm 1290gt, 990duke, fz6, suzuki bandit 1200, ninja 400.

I had a 2012 for 5 years and almost 30k trouble free miles. Honestly, I never rode it off road on anything more than a hard packed dirt road. I spent 95% of my time on the pavement. It soaked up the miles effortlessly, and like you mention its low center of gravity makes it handle quite well for as tall as it is. I'm considering getting one again!

  • @SnickterP

I went from a 2012 NC700X to a '16 F800GS. Thought id go off pavement more with that but I never did since i have a smaller dual sport anyways. The extra suspension travel also means more height, so in some ways the NC was easier for a novice off road. Skid plate protected its belly if you ran it over anything. If that engine didnt have a fuel cutoff at 6600 RPMs, i probably never would have sold it. I REALLY wish Honda brought their Crossrunner over here. VFR800 engine in a NC like chassis. Would have been perfect for me!

I think the fjr gen 3 would be my pick. The six speed transmission increased gearing 10 percent over gen 2, which also had a 2,7 percent taller top gear than gen 1. I find most large bikes do not have tall enough gearing, although the gen 3 fjr does. One of the criticisms of the gl 1800 is that it could have had a sixth gear, or taller gearing. This is solvable, through commissioning a gear manufacturer to cut a larger drive pinion gear for the final drive, and space the driven pinion gear, but it would cost. if I was allowed to alter the gearing, then the Goldwing gets the nod. 10:39
