Satin or shiny just depends on the metal underneath. Bead blast whatever you want to plate first.

A tip: While electroplating, hydrogen is being created in form of bubbles that sticks to the metal. Since the hydrogen atom is the smallest in the universe, it can slip through any cracks of any material and make it brittle and more prone to cracking. This phenomenon is known as Hydrogen Embrittlement. Therefore, the same metal may not have the same stiffness and safety anymore. In order to remedy this, the metal piece should be baked to dissipate these bubbles.

6:20 Yes, copper does plate directly to steel. However, steel plating is usually done with a less "noble" metal that will protect the steel from corrosion (zinc, chrome, etc). Copper is more noble and does the opposite. If that steel is exposed by a scratch or whatnot, the steel will erode faster than if it wasn't copper plated.

Do you all know anyone that does hobby type silver plating ? I have a few trays I'd pay a lot to have them plated by someone who makes a hobby of it. One is a round 11" diameter that is missing about 30% of its' silver plating.
