Sounds great! And so good that you had no issues with the first start up, most people do. 😉
Geoffrey, absolutely awesome to watch your skills sorting the S3 2.25 petrol for further long term duty. Our S2A does'nt owe us a penny for doing regular workhorse duties since 1964 without any major overhaul so far...few makes could claim such record and what kind of backup to keep "them" happily on road and anywhere else! A trusty friend of the family! Please, keep on restoring all things great and so very neatly! A delight to watch AND listen alike! Thank you, Wolfgang.
Oh man... I rarely comment on anything, just because I don’t usually have nothing good to add. BUT the sound of the engine! I had the biggest smile of the month after hearing it. So damn great!!!! What a fantastic job you have done, you inspire me and im sure a lot of many others to start working on our cars ourselves. Thank you very much sir!
Ahh, forgot to flip the "running direction" switch from Northern to Southern Hemisphere. It happens.
Adam Savage, of Mythbusters fame, discusses failure on a regular basis in his podcast. In his "1 Day Builds" on tested they show the failures as you generally do, as it shows the reality of what our hobbies entail mistakes those mistakes lead to knowledge. By allowing us to see and be aware of your failure you are letting us know that even guys as detail-oriented and with finished products as fine as yours still make mistakes and its just part of the game. Keep your head up! We can't wait to see the finished product!
That motor sounds like it’s running great. So amazing how everything you do works perfectly first time!
I've found your channel a few days ago and i can't stop watching your videos,high quality content and your humor gets me every time. You are doing a great job,keep it up!
May I just say I am enjoying this series thoroughly. Watching your work makes me feel like I myself could tackle such a project. Now all I need is the dang Land Rover.
Look, all of you, I am sick and tired of people maligning the 2.25 engine. It does NOT leak oil, the Landie is simply marking it's territory!! Fantastic series Geoffrey, not only for your knowledge and experience, but your humour and video skills. Keep it up.
love the sound, the paint job, the editing. top marks Geoffrey Croker!

And at the same time he displays a perfect understanding of what we - the viewers - actually want. Shining engines making roaring sounds while they - the engines - spit flames at us. Oh yes, we love it!!
Build videos for the storage/run frame are on Patreon if you’re into that. The patreon videos are much more basic than you see here, and really just sideline stuff, but they exist. And the part number for the hose is 546588. Thank you very much to the guy who let me know. Sorry you comment disappeared in all the video shemozzle. Project Land Rover will continue in earnest, but you will see different videos for a while. The Land Rover will mostly happen in the background, and videos about it will pop out whenever they do. Just because cars take a long time, and I like working on faster easy stuff as well. Cheers Oh yeah and also the spring washer under the oil pressure sender is just because I needed a thick spacer to clear the adapter and couldn't find a clean normal washer. The threads are sealed so should be fine. I'll change to a flat washer if it leaks - may even pick up a washer next time I'm in the town - no drama.

I'm back for a 2nd watch as I have just bought a s1 with a 2.25 engine. I'm going to be going down the steep learning path of building this engine as all my previous land rovers have had swapped engines. (holden, ford and isuzu) All new to me. I hope mine ends up as sexy as your finsihed build. Well done.
@GeoffreyCroker
4 жыл бұрын
Awesome. You'll be more than happy with the 2.25 in a series1. I get why people swapped them out back in the day for more power. But now that owning an old series is more about the experience and fun of driving, the original LR motors are the way to go. They're pretty torquey little motors. You won't find it lacking around town or on the backroads.

@@GeoffreyCroker cheers. I have been told the 2L engine can cost $7k + to rebuild, so a 2.25 is a good option as parts are plenty and there are plenty of spare engines about.

The probelm most people face with timing the distributor drive to the cam shaft is caused my modern mechanics techniques. These engines were designed to be fixed "in the field" and now days people have this obsession with fixing them inside in nice warm and dry garages. What you want to do is make sure the defender breaks down facing north in the middle of a field near a tree about 3 expletive filled days befroe you plan on moving it again. Then on the third day when you are clocking the distributor drive take intermediate point between the mossy side of the tree and the direction you see a bird flying to roost around dusk and clock the drive 180 degrees from that point. Never fails.
Geoffrey, hope all is well on the other side of the planet! Look forward to an update on any one of your many projects.
Made me smile. abeselutly beautiful!
The engine running on the stand is what get me to give u the like
much better! the copper pipe looks fantastic. I thought the stainless exhaust studs were a great idea? i cant for the life of me figure out why there would be issues with either? my theory is work hardening can cause the copper to crack? stainless can gall?
That is so awesome. I admire your ability to machine your own studs. I'm curious, how long did it take you to build that stand to test it on?
Loved this thanks for share!
Good work - loving the videos
Geoffrey, first of all I like your video style and meticulous working practices. Just one thing jumped out at me, shouldn't the oil sender use either a copper washer or just screw in tight with a tapered thread? The spring washer will probably cause a leak. I liked the Snatch style fast cutting on the stand build.
@GeoffreyCroker
5 жыл бұрын
Possibly. We’ll see. The thread is sealed so it should be fine. The spring washer is just there because I needed a spacer so the sender would clear the aluminium and I couldn’t find a normal washer the right size 😉
I would love to see a video with the motor being put into the Land Rover and the final result :)

Thanks for the amazing videos. Just bought and started the tear down of a SIII Dormobile. Any chance you could do a short vid on bichromating all these shiny bolts on the engine. Zinc plate then....? I’m a bit confused about what the magic dipping process is.
Sounds good
I smiled so big once that beaut cranked up.
Pilot bearing in flywheel wears out if you keep your foot on the clutch...? That would be the throwout bearing. the pilot bearing is just a centering device. Am I nuts? That motor sounds fine. The exhaust flames indicate cam overlap that is normal and resolves when the exhaust system is installed.
@GeoffreyCroker
5 жыл бұрын
If your foot’s on the clutch the gearbox input shaft is spinning in that little bronze bearing. If the box is in neutral it isn’t. I’ve spun that bearing and it is a shit of a job to change from under the car. 😂😂 Oh, and I’m not disagreeing about the thrust bearing... I was just talking motor. I guess everyone replaces the thrust bearing with the clutch, but you’d hope the engine pilot bearing lasts several 100 thousand km’s.

The pilot bearing wouldn't usually wear out with your foot on the clutch But land rover being what is they used a bushing rather than a roller bearing like everyone else So it will wear out if you leave your foot on the clutch

@@fowletm1992 Those bushings used to outlast the clutch. Change it with the clutch plate and throw out bearing. Something is wrong if LR is eating those up. Makes no sense.

@@alext9067 as he said if you sit in traffic with your foot on the clutch you will wear it out If you drive it properly it'll prob last forever Its only uses with the clutch in and the box in gear Remembering these days there's alot more sitting in traffic then "back in the day" Especially in parts of NZ where mountainess terrain means roads can't be upgraded to meet population growth
