Valve Compressor Restoration
Ғылым және технология
The restoration of a Stevens Made in USA valve lifter. These are used to compress valve springs so that the retainers can be unclipped, and the spring and valve removed.
This restoration includes reproducing the original nickel plating with nickel/cobalt.

Your Willy is now a Star! Well done . Great idea with the expanding foam too.
3 Videos in 2 days! And the prettiest valve spring compressor I have ever seen.

Cheers Silas, and early in the day for you as well.
The fact that you showed when you used it after it was restored was so very satisfying. 💯
YT algorithm had a “Bingo” night for this old jack-of-many-trades, seeing as I would have been equally happy to watch you refurbish a Fairchild 670 or an RCA Ba6A 😂
Made in the USA. Re built in New Zealand with metric fasteners now it's perfect. Good work as always.

Using Made in the USA tools to fix Made in the USA tools, outstanding! I’m literally mesmerized watching your videos. Thank you!
Gotta give it to O'l Geoffrey, I've never been more interested in spring compression in my life.. luv your videos can't wait for the next one.

I love these no talking/music videos, but I also like your sense of humour... so keep it up!
Nice refurbishing project. That is one of those tools you rarely need, but when you need it, it is invaluable... Thumbs Up!
Nice work. I´m impressed that you nickel plated it. And an extra applause that you keep your bench top clean.
Brilliant video, Geoffrey. Thanks so much for sharing.
What a nifty tool!!! Such a nice looking tool now!
Mate, watching your videos from across the ditch. Very impressed. Can’t wait for more.
Perfect! Thanks.

This may be too forward a request, but have you thought of sending this man one of your 1879 Adjustable Wrench's you make? To think, one of your tools you made went towards his restoration of a tool or the jeep.

Looking forward to the large plier restoration video ! Looks great mate.

I don't know what HTR you've been watching but I felt deja vu while watching this restoration - very similar tools/techniques to HTR. Not that that's a bad thing.
Beautiful restoration and great to see it in use at the end 👍
I found your channel yesterday, and have now watched all of your videos. So there.
As usual a beautiful job. The word masochist came to mind when you were filing the frame portion although you can't argue about the results.
Excellent video I guess you will have your own tv program soon the way your perfecting these videos. Like the repair shop program we have in the UK. I would have prefered none nyloc nuts but i think you did a great job Phil
The valve compressor looks better than new!! Good one, mate
That's a walk down memory lane, had one similar to that, not as pretty, wore it to the nub :) Don't forget to tap the retainer with a rubber mallet to make sure the clips are seated. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Good on ya Geoff you restored my first valve spring compressor brings back memories mostly of pinched fingers
Very nice. I'm glad you're putting out more videos.
These videos are insanely good.
😂 by this video I finished watching all the videos on the channel in two days, amazing channel. keep up the great work
This video made me feel less OCD. Thanks
Nice renovation, nice video, thank you!
Nice. I can't wait to watch your next video, now. Good job.
I'll probably be building a bench-mounted one of a different design for my small VW air-cooled heads, but it was quite fun seeing you get this one back into fighting trim and looking good!

Yeah, these hand held compressors are fiddly to use and a little dodgy as well. A bench mounted setup is much better!

Beautiful job.

Fantastic video!
fantastic presentation!!!
Spectacular as always.
So this is only the second video of yours that I watched, and as an American I already kind of feel a little mocked. So, good job 👍

Excellent. I've watch most of your restorations and all amazing. Can you do one on your nickel plating setup and technique. For this one you had a larger setup. I do many woodworking and metalworking restos and would like to nickel plate many smaller parts without breaking the bank on those expensive plating kits. Thanks and keep up the great work.
@GeoffreyCroker
5 жыл бұрын
This solution is an expensive kit. For a DIY small kit, just get a glass jar, two strips of nickel from eBay, and an old phone charger or similar. Fill the jar with vinegar, hang the two pieces of nickel opposite each other, hook positive to one piece of nickel and negative to the other. In about an hour you'll have made nickel acetate for plating.
Absolutely Fabulous
Well that sure beats the hell out of my valve spring compressor that often gets used as a handy extra large G-clamp!
Great content as always! Thanks! Would you perhaps consider doing a video on how to do the zinc plating?
great job !
I've got a lot of old tools with this level of benign brown surface rust. KZread commenters, do you think it's better to remove the rust manually like this, do it with electrolysis as Geoffrey sometimes does in later videos, or just leave it alone?
kind of wish you would go back and narrate these as well. great videos
I absolutely love your videos and the style you use. You must have an impressive shop / tool collection as you always have what you need or make it. Are you a machinist by trade, or do this every day? It would be cool to do a video on how you make your videos, or a glimpse into your shop if that wouldn't be sharing too much to the world. Can't wait to see the rest of the series. What camera are you using to make this video?
Fantastic Geoffrey I’m in awe of how clean you keep stuff. Even your hands. Until I saw the gloves, I was thinking that you were using George Costanza as a hand model 😁

Martin Butler (RetroRestore) could use this. he broke his spring compressor trying to get the valves out of his reliant robin heads! great job!
This is bloody great, just being curious, how do you remember where goes each part when you put it all together again?
Well done Geoffrey. Probably looks better now than it did brand new. :-)
Nice!
What do you normally do with the leftover chemicals? Rust remover etc..
Thanks Geoffrey getting near mirror finish lots of prep! For your galvanising bath 4.5 v ish, 5amps, zinc anode? What’s the electrolyte?
Perfect !

The restoration of the Land Rover is taking too long. Guess I better watch all your restorations one more time.
Brilliant stuff! You could make a 'making of' video with voiceover, I can just hear your dry humour already! And all that work just to check that one valve.

Nah, I don't even really need it now. I've had this lifter bouncing around for a while, and I figured I'd do something with it while I have a motor open to demonstrate with.
Hi Geoffrey just found your channel! Really nice videos! Keep em.coming! Just two questions, what solution do you use for platting and what are the specs on the power supply? Danirl
Wow, Worcester, MA. Been a long while since anything quality was ever made there. And my guess is, Mr Croker actually knows how to pronounce that city's name correctly.
A different approach to removing the rust is vinegar and salt. I have been using it for years to remove rust and it works fairly decently after a few days. A lot easier to find as well.
You are my spirit animal.

what are you using to heat it up?
I have to say, the moment you got annoyed with the tool which wouldn't fit, so you ground it down to make it fit. I like that type of thinking.
I cried when I saw the ground multi-grips. But it had to be done. Hope they were old :)
Nice
Does it matter what order the large washers go back in? I thought the thick washer with the tab came out 1st? *I have been wring before
Gman.. beast!
Another awesome job! Other than (I think) having the two large round washers together rather than split up one on each side of the washer with the flange as they were originally, but I think they are there for spacing only, and it obviously didn’t have any effect on the finished project. It’s just the anal retentive side of me coming out. Love this channel so much. Can’t wait for the next one!!
The correct tool for the job(like some gears) “If you can’t find ‘em, grind ‘em!”

Boy that's a very nice spring compressor. I have never seen one like that here in the UK. It's the Dawg's dangly bits ( Dawg's as its a yank tool lol ) Geoff was that cylinder head off of your 2.25cc Land Rover by any chance?

Hey Geoffrey, I just wanted to say I’ve been loving your videos. Your attention to detail is amazing! I ran across your channel looking for more information on the Myford ML7 and you convinced me to buy one. Ha. I pick it up tomorrow. I had a question about your zinc plating. How do you determine the amperage to plate with? I had a kit from Caswell and it worked but my zinc always came out dull. It would polish up pretty nice but I don’t think that should be required from what I have read. I also never used HCl to prep parts ... just wire brush and degreaser. Keep up the great videos. Cheers! Stephen (from Canada)
@GeoffreyCroker
5 жыл бұрын
I guess. I think the specific formula is 1 amp per 65cm2 or something like that. I use between 1.5 and 3 amps for anything that fits in a 10L kit.

Is that cylinder head unleaded petrol or diesel?
Here we go :) Keept it up
Why does heating up bolts make them easier to remove?
In Knipex we trust eh? Lol, might want to invest in a needle nose vise grips.
Got one just like it
