Dude. I was stuck with 1 dead electric grinder and 1 battery for the battery grinder. Do you understand how long it takes to cut 3mm plate when you have to recharge a battery every few minutes? That grinder chews a 5ah battery in a minute. 😤😠

On any occasions you have to weld this much on a panel where warpage will ALWAYS exist(you simply can't rule it out), you should jump around a lot more than you did. Making 30-40mm log welds then jump somewhere really far. Then wait to let it cool. You will still get warpage but it would be localised, small waves instead of geometry changes.

Just for future reference, if you have a long weld to make and you're in fear of it distorting the metal, weld it in back steps, meaning, if you weld it left to right and make it three to four inches long, you move back from where you began the first weld by the same amount and start your next weld and continue backwards until you've finished it. Or.... you could weld from the ends toward the center, that should help to keep things right. That being said, you honestly do pretty good work!

You say don't take advice, but you make some good points. That is thick steel yet you still demonstrate you have to be careful with heat and weld. Same with the elbow - good advice when thinking about how materials behave. And don't feel bad about going bsck and starting again. That chassis was in a bad way and alot of people would of said "that will do" and carried on. Hats off to you!

Hey Geoff, now that I have read the comments I have a suggestion; you should make a video talking about what you would like to do in your spare time and spend hours editing for others entertainment (such as repairing a chassis) then ask people for advice on how they would do it. Only then you should make a video of yourself doing it, paying careful attention to all the safety tips and Pro Tips from those who have many more hours of KZread viewing than you have. You would therefore also avoid all of your mistakes because you would have been told how to do it correctly, adjusting for all variables that are obvious to those who have watched every episode of Project Binky and other car restoration channels. This would also mean you dont have to suffer the indignity of finding out later that there were many better ways of doing it than you knew.

Love your videos, my 2 cents would be, when everything is tacked and you are sure the measurements are alright, don’t put long welds on one side like you did on the bottom, but weld 10cm, then go to the other side, weld 10cm, weld top/bottom and move from one side to another, that way you distribute heat/warpage and you should have less distortion, also when you start welding it, weld it to the end, don’t stop and let the metal cool and then weld again as that will warp again. My other suggestion would be when you put plates in for the chassis, bevel them out a bit as what you are doing is putting them tight to each other and then pushing with the mig gun (but bevel and pull), so it creates less penetration, I’m welding a lot of 2mm square tubing so I have to be really careful and warpage is a bastard.

Great video, entertaining to watch. One thing I'd recommend is not welding with bare skin showing. There is still alot of UV coming off of the weld spark, even if you're doing something quick like tacking something on. I'm no welder but I've seen what it can do. It'll literally give you sun burn. But keep up the great videos, can't wait to see this yoke runing again!!

I am well aware 😁 It's peak summer here and I couldn't do long sleeves! I've done lots of sheet metal welding, back before fancy helmets were comon. So you'd just close your eyes for each tack. Nothing like sunburnt eyelids! 🤣

You have a rather peculiar way of measuring depth with a caliper

Hi Geoffrey, Good episode, not being able to weld I have not considered the amount of movement that can take place when welding... Very interesting. Take care. Paul,,
