This video was really worth watching I used these tasks in my class, thanks for sharing, please create more videos like this❤
So you couldn't remember much but still made a video...
Did he have a ticket?🤨🤣
Thank you very much. This is excellent content, and I agree with all, that’s you have mentioned, especially a comfortable chair! Unfortunately, my daughter doesn’t Only teach five or six lessons a day. She teaches more like 8 to 10 lessons per day. That is a hectic schedule, as there’s lesson preparation, homework, feedback, and I need not go on. The reason, she has such a heavy schedule, is because as a South African, she is not regarded by most of the companies, as a native English speaker, and because of this, she is paid much less than other online teachers. This places the South African English speakers in the difficult position, of having to take on a heavier workload, in order to make a decent wage. This is patently unfair, and just because a country has so many official languages, does not indicate, that we are not native English speakers. We are indeed native English speakers, and we have accents not dissimilar from neutral British accents. We are not Afrikaans, nor Zulu speakers. Indeed, there are non native English speakers from South Africa who teach online, but that should be taken into account, when companies hire them. Our mother tongue is English. For this reason, I do wish the companies would recognise this, and pay us accordingly.
Wow this was great! I have my first trial tomorrow and feel so prepared!
I am pleased you found this video helpful. Best of luck with your trial lesson tomorrow. 😊
I actually wanted to know what exactly you used to do in the month of July and August when mostly the students went for summer vacations, Because almost all my students went and I'm thinking I must have a backup for this because I'm depending on preply completely ( Just to mention I'm a physics tutor, please don't get worried about my English grammar, I'm following you since you uploaded your trial lesson with a student and I'm using all those tricks in my trials thank you for that 😊)
thank you that was awsome. would you pleade teach hiw we can teach since and for in present perfect tense to esl students
Great suggestion! I shall add this to my list of video ideas.
Music unnecessary. But good
You've gotten a better teacher I saw some of your older videos. They weren't bad but you seem more at ease
Thank you ever so much and pleased you have watched my older videos. I am rather embarrassed by them to be honest.
There are usually videos just on the first assessment. What about the rest. Good video
I had the worst experience in preply! I'm so upset... the teacher turned off the camera, and he left me reading alone, I spent a long time calling him, no answer...
*on
I am so sorry to hear that. I would recommend that you get in touch with Preply and report the tutor. He is not fit to be on the platform and I am sure you would meet a good teacher, and Preply will be more than happy to replace your lesson free of charge.
wow thank you for this video it's interesting job at all and seeing my students learn from us is very fullfillng anyway I love to teach from beginners because they are moe challenging to my part and O love challenge hehehe
Great that some of your students decided to stay with online teaching!
Absolutely. It is great to hear that online teaching is becoming more acceptable these days, especially after the pandemic.
Oh, well. That’s quite an informative video! Thanks for your honesty, also. I highly appreciated, you really gave me an inside view! Since it is an English speaking country, the English teachers in state schools give actually nothing like EFL lessons, unsurprisingly. They dive into the English literature and sometimes drama and media, all of which are just not for me lol. I think most ESL teachers get unemployed within school terms since the language courses often have traffic in summer, another drawback.. But for the overall experience and particularly for those willing to see the England, it is great. I just won’t go there for anything like saving money lol. Have a good day, sir!
I am pleased that you enjoyed this video. I tried to be as candid as possible regarding the benefits and the drawbacks. The fact that everything grinds to a halt by the winter is a factor why there is much turnover in the EFL industry in the UK as well as the miserable pay, after many invest in their CPD and various qualifications. This is another reason I ended up back in South Korea.
In my free time I prefer most spending time with my beloved family and friends
Very interesting to listen to your journey. I did the standard BA in History and Spanish, then did an MA European History, followed by a CELTA. I’ve been teaching in Spain for ten years years and I’m a bit stuck thinking what next? Not sure how to get in EAP, so thanks.😊
I would recommend anyone wishing to get into EAP is to do an MA in English Language Teaching, Linguistics or Language Acquisition. There is also another route into this by doing a DELTA instead as some universities are willing to accept this as an alternative to the MA.
Thanks a lot my best teacher i am waiting 🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😊
I hope you enjoyed the video. 😊
You are my respectful teacher. You are the brainy CELTA teacher. You are a knowledgeable CELTA certified teacher. You are a well qualified CELTA teacher.I also wanna become a CELTA teacher like you. You are the best. But sometimes i feel i can't do it because i am a non native speaker from pakistan. I have a strong desire to become a CELTA teacher.😞 but i'm doing my upmost to full fill my dream goal.

thank you ✨ I was struggling to upload powerpoints..now i can✨
I am just a new tutor, thank you for the tips they were so useful
شكرا ❤
Awesome tips. Thank you 🙏
Glad you found these tips helpful! 😊
Absolute slave labour 😅! There is undoubtedly a very dark side to the ESL game! All the best Martin 🙏
Soon will be doing the full online CELTA, but lots of doubters telling me some countries won't accept an online CELTA' is that true, not that going to put me off doing it😅
The online CELTA certificate does not have any indication on it that it was the online course, and is the same certificate as the face-to-face one. The haters are gonna hate but don't listen to them.
Hello! I'm about to start a TEFL course. Is that the best certification to take? I have a DUI in the US from more than 10 years ago. Koreans get drunk a lot, maybe they won't mind?
I’m no expert when it comes to law but after ten years, don’t records for DUI get expunged? I think in the grand scheme of things, it won’t be too problematic but always best to check online to see what the recommendation is. I’m sure you’re not the first person to encounter this. In terms of certification, the CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL are regarded as the best courses to undertake. They are worth their weight in gold and will certainly open more doors for you.
@@ELTExperiences Oh! Good I asked you before I paid for TEFL! It does seem like Japan prefers TEFL. But if they will take CELTA then I will just do CELTA! Thanks! I got my DUI in Texas, I'm not sure if it's been expunged. Texas is pretty tough on DUI's. Nothing was struck and there was no resisting or anything. It was a clean arrest... I currently live in the Philippines. It's just a few hundred dollars and some hours to visit Korea in person. The apostille process for my degree and FBI background check might be difficult from here, though. Thank you! I will look into CELTA, now!
@@oodo2908 you’re very welcome and I wish you all the very best of luck. Once you have everything to go, and all your things prepared to start your contract, all will go well. I am sure. Keep me posted and I hope you enjoy the CELTA. It is available online as well as face-to-face. I really enjoyed my course.
@@oodo2908 the only thing I could find about this was in this forum: www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=406171. Upon a little digging, you could request that the DUI be expunged and then apply for a Criminal Background Check. Good luck 🤞
@@ELTExperiences There seems to be a centre for CELTA here in Manila. Having trouble finding how to register for online courses and I don't see a fee... I just read that CELTA is best for teaching adults? Will it still be considered for teaching children? Are adults the better career path?
Could you do a detailed video about how to make a lesson plan? Let's say the student's goal is to boost their grammar or speaking for example? Thanks.
That is a great idea and I will add this to my list of possible future videos. 😊
@@ELTExperiences I'd be deeply grateful! Thank you, sir!
Is it worth taking the CELTA if you’ve no degree ? Nice hat 🎩 😊
I think that it is possible without a degree and it would open up opportunities for teaching online with some platforms willing to accept it.
I don't have any experience in exam preparation, but I do wanna start preparing students for this. What would you write instead of exam preparation experience/grades students achieved? 🙂 Thanks! 😃
Can one do CELTA or any other teaching certification/diploma from English speaking countries (native) as an international student? If so plz guide about the procedure or recommend something else.
Thanks so much for the question. You would be able to do the CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL in the UK, and I would recommend either St Giles or International House as CELTA providers. You can always start here to find a suitable centre: www.cambridgeenglish.org/find-a-centre/find-a-teaching-centre/?location=United%20Kingdom
Thanks a million for your reply.
Recently became a tutor on Preply, with little teaching experience and no TEFL. I felt uneasy at first, but your content helped me gain more confidence which has led to the beginning of my ESL teaching career look promising! Thanks
Glad it helped!
Thank you for all the insightful information. I'm in two minds really. My case is I'm a Spaniard who has been teaching Enlish as a foreign language for over 15 years in Spain. I have worked in private Academies as well as specialized in online teaching as a freelance. I studied English Philology, however I dropped out and didn't finish the degree in the last year for personal reasons. I wonder if TEFL or CELTA would help me find better job prospects and if so, which one suits better for me. I take CELTA is a winning option, but in my case, with an unfinished degree, I don't know if I would find a proper job just with CELTA and so I should go for the cheaper option and do TELF. Thanks for reading!
Interesting video and glad I watched it. 3 years on, who would you now recommend as an online employer?
First time I had problems with my students :(. Classes were good, they obeyed me, they were good students. Suddenly, everything changed after a new student came, and one day they lied to me and they disobeyed me, so I reacted too bad and I feel so devastating since then. I felt so overpass because of bad work conditions (very low salary for many hours of work almost without a break in my personal life and all alone because I was the only teacher and no much experience); low blood pressure because of terrible hot in my city; extremely high levels of anxiety; felt so terrible bad physically, exhausted.... The last day I was angry with them for their disobedience, I didn't react professionally, I was unpleasant, because I was waiting for an apologised that never came. They made fun of my anger, and everything went worse. After all, I quit the job, because I didn't receive any support from the school during this single day. Two wonderful weeks with many pretty memories, only 1 mistake and...boom. I feel so bad since then, I didn't eat properly and even sleep well. I didn't want to be like that, I was happy with them, they were good until those two days... How can I overcome this terrible feel of gulty? :(
I've been teaching in daegu for 3 years at a hagwon. I absolutely love it. But I'm 40 in a few months. I wondering whats the cut off age for working at hagwons? I want to continue doing it but im worried considering my age I won't be wanted much longer. Any thoughts?
Good question! From my own experience, there is no age restriction for those working at hagwons in South Korea. There is automatic retirement for those that work at universities which is now 65 years. However, I’ve known some people who retire from universities and then continue working at hagwons post-65 years. I hope this helps.
Many thanks🌼
You're welcome 😊
Thanks for confirming that there is something like a "NS" bias for South Korea. I think you are aware that our GCE O levels for English in Singapore are as difficult as the same level in England and we are not really an ESL country on paper haha. Thanks for all your good work!
This is the only thing that I really don’t like as there is no NNS recognition. I’ve met some wonderful non-native English teachers who are marvellous in their own right and it’s a shame that this isn’t much opportunity in Korea. However, there are opportunities for NNS teachers to work at Universities in Korea but it takes a lot of effort to get that job secured.
@SeoulForeigner Thank you for the information! I have a Masters degree but I guess that will not help. At this point in my life, I was just curious about Korea.
You will actually be able to get a job at a Korean University teaching English. There is no restriction for the E1 visa for professors, unlike the E2 visa for the English teacher visa. I would recommend my University as they are always looking for Assistant Professors regardless their nationality. @@ELTExperiences Thank you. I don't meet all the requirements but this is good to know!
First of all i wanna tell you that you are my best teacher in the world but i am very sad, upset because you don't make videos everyday and I was feeling blue since i watched your last video. You don't know i am your biggest fan.i also want to become an English language teacher after doing CELTA and TKT as well and i am studying in BS English 2nd semester.i am looking forward to becoming an English teacher.❤❤🎉🎉
Could you give me a little bit of response, please.
So sorry to hear that you’ve missed my videos and apologies for not uploading more regularly. I’ve been snowed under with work but now have a bit of time off so will be more than happy to upload more content. Thanks for your support and patience. It’s really appreciated. 😊
@@ELTExperiences I Can Feel You, I know You are really go- getter teacher. Thanks a bunch for giving me your response i am really ecstatic.Have a good one.
Wow what a miracle. I’ve been researching this and you just made a video.. i’m about to watch some of your videos regarding teaching in Korea. If it’s ok might there be an email for me to contact you incase I have some specific questions?
You’re welcome to email at martinsketchley(at)icloud(dot)com for any questions you may have.
Thank you so much!
wow! Did you take Arizona State University's TESOL? I heard some familiar things in this video, especially the different approaches to teaching a second language..
I took my MA in English Language Teaching at the University of Sussex in the U.K. and we learnt a lot about language acquisition theory and teaching pedagogy.
we never learned pronunciation, but we can communicate well with native speakers, especially those who are working in the call centers... why is everyone making a big deal with pronunciation when what they should be more focused on learning is - how to be fluent because that is the essence of learning another language, right? But well, each country has its struggle in pronouncing a vowel, a diphthong, a consonant... I observed one student who arrived at the school many years ago. Before he had a thick Asian accent when speaking in class, then after like more than 3 weeks or more than a month, he spoke like a native speaker. It's just a matter of mimicking and that's all. Sometimes, I don't understand the learners and those management looking for a perfect pronunciation. Even native speakers make mistakes pronouncing some words. Even in my native language and dialect, I mispronounce some words.
I think what she wanted to know and learn is the slang commonly used per region in England. She has advanced English and she can communicate well. She probably wanted to know the slang words that an average British uses in topics like sports, politics... How come she couldn't understand the British but she has a high level of proficiency? Or maybe she has a problem with a British accent especially if a British speaks fast.
You might want to add a disclaimer re one having to be completely and utterly insane to buy all that when one will be on Cambly. Or even Preply. Consider the cost of the equipment as well. Lastly, the schools/centers/whatever one wants to call them should also have a disclaimer: Brits like you: I've got toothache. Yanks like me: I have a toothache. As some have noted, Aussies, Brits and Yanks aka humans separated by a common language. Can toss in the Kiwis as well. Whenever this subject/topic comes up I am instantly reminded of Robin Williams' character in Good Morning Viet Nam. Slip me some skin...
