Hello Martin, I’m so happy to have found your channel. And thank you for sharing your experience and useful tips🙏 I’m a tutor on preply, teaching Korean to students. Most of my students are total beginners and I wonder how you approach to total beginners and how you prepare for the trial lesson. 😊

This is a great question and something that I have not really shared in videos so it would be worth creating a video about this topic. However, when it comes down to teach total beginners, it is important for learners who are unfamiliar about reading or writing Hangul that they learn as quickly as possible. I taught myself to read and write Hangul but it took a while as I don't necessarily learn by studying or memorisation. These days, there are plenty of apps to help learners learn Hangul as well as learn the language, such as Duolingo, so I would recommend total beginners to Korean to study alone using these apps. In terms of teaching total beginners, I would recommend keeping things simple. Introduce lots of vocabulary with pictures and drilling pronunciation. Combine the words with pictures and get students to notice the writing and spelling. Introduce lots of engaging games [I have a video where I share 10 activities to make lessons interactive, so make sure you subscribe and turn on the notification bell] and ensure that students enjoy their lesson. Keep things simple and easy. Thank you so much for your comment and I wish you luck with your teaching journey. - Martin 😄

This is a very helpful video; thank you so much for sharing. If you end up creating a video on how to best integrate Google Docs within a lesson, that would be brilliant. I find that I struggle most with the technological aspects, using different platforms, etc., which often disrupts the flow of my lesson.

Hi! I'm new to teaching on Preply and I wondered what your advice is about planning your own lessons after the trial lesson (if you're not following the Preply resources, that is). How would you decide the best thing to start with and how to make all the lessons make sense as a whole (especially if the student has subscribed to quite a few lessons)? My main worry is that I would have very little to go on if not following a Preply Course, and would thus jump around from one thing to another in each lesson, making it all a bit messy and not relating to each other. I hope that makes sense! Thank you :)

Hi Sophie. Your question makes perfect sense, and I shall break it down for you. I don't use any coursebook or the Preply material, but I do use material from ESL Brains and LinguaHouse. After the trial lesson, I determine the aims and objectives with the student and decide on how best to achieve this. For example, if a student wants to prepare for IELTS, I download such material and focus on writing (most students have difficulty with this) as well as speaking. The listening and reading components can be done as part of self-study. Should a student want to focus on general communication, I would then refer to a coursebook and then seek alternative material online. The coursebook would provide the necessary structure but I wouldn't focus solely on this. If a student would like to improve Business English and communication, then I would download such material from LinguaHouse as well as ESL Brains. The best way forward to give you some confidence is to get a coursebook - intermediate is best - as well as register to the aforementioned websites. This will give you all you need to know when it comes down to preparing post-trial lesson. I hope this helps. - Martin 😊

@@ELTExperiences Thank you so much for your reply! That's very helpful. When you say a coursebook, do you mean one like Cutting Edge/Headway? So far I have had students wanting to have lessons focused on speaking - thus, would an entire lesson be spent only on speaking activities? There wouldn't be any other activities added in for variety and extra improvement of skills, such as a short grammar or reading activity that relates to the lesson topic and objectives?

@sophiehewes747 when it comes to online lessons, then I tend to focus on particular topics and then send out activities to students for them to review language and respond to any particular grammatical issues. We then review this in our next class and I have some discussion questions ready to go which focus on the grammatical area to further reinforce meanings for students. Always think of how you can reduce your lesson planning and more about responding to learner input. This will reduce your planning time and get things more immediate for your learners.

@@ELTExperiences OK - so online conversational lessons would consist mainly of discussion and lots of speaking activities - there wouldn't be any listening or reading activities thrown in now and then, for example, it would be different speaking activities based on one topic for each lesson? (And then worksheets for homework, I think you said?) Thank you 🙂

Preply is a real platform for tutors to teach students online. If you teach on this platform, you’ll get paid after the small commission that Preply charges.
