Martin, I think I am taking a chance asking you an aside question. I'm 70, so I am almost sure I would not qualify to teach. My question is: I would like to travel in Korea. I apologize, I know you are NOT a tourist assistant. There are so many videos out here and I would say they are exclusively about food. There are very few informational video's. If I found work there, it would be interesting. I did work in Tianjin China, many years ago. I would like to go to South Korea, but what more is there than just eating. Hi William. Thanks for taking the time to write your comment and asking such a wonderful question. Korea certainly has some standing with its food culture, but there is absolutely other things to do. For example, as much of the country is mountainous, there are some opportunities to go hiking in the mountains or to visit Buddhist monasteries. You could also visit some of the islands of its Southern point. During the evenings, there are many cultural events happening with concerts, tours, etc. I hope this helps and thank you once again for your question. Martin 😊

I work 1:30 to 6:30 with full time pay. And the first hour is "office hours" no lesson planning. It's been the greatest job ive ever had by a long shot.

That's great to hear that your experience with a hagwon has been positive. Despite the potential negatives for some hagwons, there are some professional institutes out there and I had a great experience with my last school in Korea.

Hi Martin, sorry if this is an over-asked question, but in your experience, how necessary is a TEFL certificate to work in a Hagwon? I don’t have one but do have a degree and a masters (albeit in a non-education field). Most searches tell me they are needed but this comes from TEFL websites which will obviously advocate for them to increase their sales. Thanks!

Hello Jack. Thank you for your question. To be honest, I am not completely sure but looking at some of the adverts on Dave's ESL Café, hagwons appear to only want candidates with a degree. However, an online teaching course may be helpful as something is better than nothing. A friend runs his own TEFL course which is better than all those other courses, more info here: www.tefllemoncourses.com/. As you have an MA, you may want to consider working for a university in South Korea where you can get a lot more holiday entitlement and more flexible hours compared to a hagwon working you to the ground. The medical is relatively straightforward and is done within 30 minutes. I received the results the following day and was registered for the National Health Insurance Service from then on. Just make sure you plan accordingly for the medical check and is an opportunity to get things picked up during this.

Any inkling I had to work in South Korea before has now gone. It sounds horrible!

It certainly isn't easy living and working in South Korea. However, I would recommend visiting the country as the people are so friendly and hospitable. If you wanted to work in Korea, then I would recommend finding a reputable private academy for employment, such as Wall Street English, Pagoda, or YBM.

Wow 10 days.Thats very less. Not good for mental health

I got let go because of parents complaints.
