I support the Xbox theory. One critical piece of information is that all people who have cracked the old file say it contains sensitive information. It sounds like they haven't cracked the code and just want to pretend at first, but many instances of definitely fake decrypts have shown that people are willing to lie to show off. The only thing that can scare off these people is legal action from Microsoft. However, as of 2024 the Xbox360 is all but abandoned and the door to backup/homebrew has been blown wide open. There is no legal ground for Microsoft to claim material harm. So try and crack the code!

I frickin love goofy ahh things like this being approached with a serious tone and a mysterious soundtrack to go with it! Here's a fun angle of approach. Scour every inch of each of the developers history for who might've been the likeliest to choose the password for the decoy - people are much easier to approach as an attack vector. Doing research on the possible originators is much easier than some profile-less file. Ofc the eventual hopeful result of which would be a much more accurate ability to craft a wordlist to bruteforce the file to. God damn I wish I was 15 again to have all the time in the world.

If it really is a 16 digit number then I think it is crackable, for example if you paid 1 bitcoin you could get 1e18 hashes per second for an entire day. If 7z is really just 500k x sha256 then you could crank out every single 16 digit number combo in just a few seconds for around 50 bucks give or take. (napkin math and research here) It's also quite possible the previous person to try cracking it did exactly what I'm proposing and decided to leave it alone anyway. I think unless we know the password length cracking it is impossible even using btc miners especially since only older miners can do this kind of sha256 (pre asic boost I think) I guess I also fundamentally recommend leaving the file alone, it's very likely not interesting and would likely cause someone a big headache if it was cracked.

Its a quote from DUNE not movies or book specifically... I havent even read dune but watched both adaptions. Also my guess is its data on early players/purchasers. Also dune is peak nerd like Hitchhikers Guide the Galaxy (which actually is referenced in this video as well). That quote being a password is extremely high when a nerd is the owner.
I think, the file contains Notch's diary of all the mistakes he has made in Minecraft development to date. One word document for each day.

This file is an early build of xbox mc, uploaded by 4j for the minecon team to install onto the devkit xbox360 they had for the minecon demo. I know that mojang at jat point only had the one s3 bucket, and an encrypted 7z stored onto the bucket is far easier than trying to send a big file like that thru email. Edit: the reason there's no user info is probably because they got an s3 write only link to the bucket. It's a pretty common way to exchange big data.
It could possibly be a guest list. Like all the people that bought a ticket to Minecon had their info dumped into one or multiple files. It's a long stretch and maybe a weird thing to do but it's possible they just wanted to make a backup of some sort.
I liked the video, but I think you jumped the shark a bit on some of your theories: The user who claimed that it was sensitive data wouldn't know if the password was used for something else, since he wasn't a mojang employee. Notch saying it was a 1.0 version of minecraft on a 2016 tweet that mentioned dates could very well just be "yeah I don't remember that specifically". Would you remember something from years ago that you yourself changed if someone gave you a specific date, and the original file and the decoy were in a timespan of less than a year, that's, in the grand scheme of things, especially years after, like a week in the timeline. The theory that the file contains the xbox version could be a good guess to the uninformed viewer (me); losing 10 or so megabytes from the 7z to the first version we have available would correspond with the removal of certain proprietary tools from development. (I have no clue on the proprietary tools used for the xbox, just logic?) I'm sleepless, if anything I said didn't make sense please do tell me, but I live for talking about these sorts of mysteries

Does anyone know the size of 1.0's server executable file? Since its essentially a headless version of minecraft with server components that could account for the 30.3mb difference in archive size if its included.

Okay, does the decoy file have the tag saying who uploaded it? If the original file is 16 digits for password, not any other ASCII or UTC characters, there are 1.85302019E15 combinations. So you could brute-force an integer password of explicitly digits only, as a starter. It would go way quicker that way to confirm that.
thespicemustflow is 16 chars long, but there's one thing i could imagine would be possible to crack it in a very and i mean literally very very easy manner: What if (yes, i'm totally serious about that theory) we convert each letter into NUMERIC DIGITS??? 1=aku , 2=blv , 3=cmw , 4=dnx , 5=eoy , 6=fpz , 7=gq, , 8=hr. , 9=is- and 0=jt/ that would result in "0859693531906253" , all numeric digits with a total length of 16 chars based on the corresponding list of numeric<->alphanumeric conversion...
Can endermen place blocks on top of shulkers? If so, is there any way Endermen in the end islands could slowly build a bridge on top of shulkers on the side of blocks to reach the main end island? Well, since it is 1000 blocks It probably is impossible since it would seem like their bridge would have to be a staircase...

Who else thinks Notch swapped the file, and when he was replying to the tweet, he was referring to the original one, because how was he supposed to remember which date he uploaded the decoy 4 years ago?
As someone who has worked conventions and such, dropping a file in an easily accessible place so that someone on site can grab it quick is a common last minute thing to do. The file name and quick .7z passwording lines up with that presumption too. My guess is it's attendee personal information for the making badges and receiving the cape.

Ignoring the entire crackpot that is herobrine conspiracy nonsense or source code to a version of minecraft, I'm going to guess that it was a copyright-protected .mp4 of a movie or episode that someone included foolishly as a joke, that would have *genuinely* given Mojang huge legal flak if someone cracked the code and spread it. They covered it up with some theatrical twitter posts to cover their bases, and Notch merely forgot which lie he was supposed to tell.
As the forum thread said, the original file may have some fucked up shit. I don't think that an Xbox 360 build would be so bad that the guy said that whoever sees it to "Keep it to himself". Even if it had Xbox 360 tools, it wouldn't be a problem anymore today. Microsoft won't sue itself. I don't know what could be so fucked up so that guy would be appalled by it. I know that gore or porn may come to peoples' minds, but I like to believe that it isn't that.

I think the password itself being sensitive doesn't make sense either. If that was the case, why not just change all the other passwords? It would take some effort, but having everything be the same password isn't safe anyway.
