Yeah I think this is one of the main reasons. Even though Minecraft has gotten a lot of other unique mobs over the years (like ghasts, blazes, guardians, phantoms, shulkers, striders, ravager etc.), creepers were the first unique one, and one that stayed pretty consistent over the years.

Minecraft just had a lot more room for creativity since there was no set story line, it's a fantasy, open world game, etc Notch and his team knew they could make whatever they wanted as long as it fitted in with the surrounding environment and how it could interact with the player Minecraft has tons of unique and original mobs, a great example would be the Ghast, name another enemy from any other game that flies around and shoots fire balls and with the latest updates bringing in fresh new content and ideas leaves even more room for creativity
lets just appreciate that a person named Dudebro was present during the creation of one of the most iconic fictional creatures ever.

When I first started playing (Alpha 1.1,) before I had taken the time to peruse Minepedia/watch a few tutorials, I was under the impression that it was the spiders blowing themselves up because, before I'd ever laid eyes on one, it happened _twice_ that I was killed by a creeper that (I assume) must have been behind me while I was locked in combat with a spider. They are _very_ sneaky.

It makes sense that the Creeper is the symbol of the game, since there is nothing else close to it. Steves face? You see it extremely rarely. Zombie or Skeleton? Too Generic. Enderman? Just two purple lines on a black background, unmarketable. seepdive of the warden????😭😭 my own theories about the warden: the end portal theory: The portal frames werent made with endrock. The yellow parst of the portal are actually the wardens bones. That makes sense because as we know circularily placed very strong material+fire=portal. The endrocks arent that strong and how the ancient builders manage to even get the thing from the end. the name of the warden theory: the definition of the warden = (a person responsible for the supervision of a particular place or activity or for enforcing the regulations associated with it.) the warden is a creature defending the plants of the deep dark from the ancient builders who tried to steal the experience energy from the plants. the deep dark city theory: When the ancient builders realiced that people werent getting out of the portal. the human race splitted in two. Some of them decided to dig even deeper, where there was no deadly silverfishes. They lived there a while until their civilization got destroyed by the Warden. Soul theory: The warden is so poverful because its the lonly mob who can use soul energy. Hi lives in a symbiosis with the deepdark plants. the warden protects them and the plants give him soul energy. Thats why the deep dark plants expand when a mob dies near.

100%! But as it's pretty much always existed we're used to it and know what we're getting into, it's not ruining the game as it's a key part of the game, but if added later it'd totally trip up players and ruin the game as it'd tear apart everything the game would of been whilst annoying players by their bases getting blown up (and other things).

100%, the Creeper would never have been added under Mojang/Microsoft's current design philosophy. It's emblematic of Minecraft's early experimental nature, and its original intention of a "survival", almost "base defense" game. The player builds, what if there was a monster that undid their work? Nowadays new content is usually more adventure/exploration oriented, something so disruptive and common like the Creeper added now would alienate a lot of Minecraft's current audience. Hell, I'll admit it, in my singleplayer worlds now I always play with mobGrefing set to off, lol
despite your videos all being of the video essay style, you always throw in some fun quirks such as the classical music montage and the r/place zoom at the end

I always thought the reason people like Creepers (myself included) was a sort of masochistic enjoyment, very much why a lot of memorable video game bosses are the ones that give the player a hard time. The Souls games are a great example of this and how every boss encounter sticks into your head for a long time.
can anyone appreciate that he made all the notes out of the screams of exploded players the best musical ever: The Creeper Musical
The Creeper face symbol is “almost” like that universal “cool S” you see on walls, textbooks, etc during the 20th century till the present. What I’m trying to say is even if people who completely don’t know what Minecraft is, they’d still recognize the creeper face or have a deja vu of seeing one before. (Although the cool S is much more mysterious in origin)
when i was playing on a server, which was a little modded, i could fly and summon lightning bolts and I could even freeze mobs and players but I was constantly getting killed by creepers so many times that I made up a story that there was a creeper cult in my city, underneath my castle was a group of creepers in a circle around my ancient altar, like there was literally a pack of creepers in a huddle around my altar used to craft runes

I think it is also important to note that the creeper is very uniquely Minecraft. Most mobs up till relatively recently have been video game staples like zombies, skeletons, spiders, pigs, etc. and for a long time in Minecraft the creeper was the only original to Minecraft creature in the game. This made it the perfect symbol for Minecraft because another mob like a zombie could be from anywhere but a creeper? That can only come from one place.
If the pig fail never happened Minecraft would be so different
Iconic, simple, plant like, actualy dangerous, the perfect enemy.
imo creepers represent the essence of minecraft, where they destroy things you make just so you can build them back better, getting creative to make sure that does not happen again, with everyone taking different approaches to achieving that goal, whether you incessantly paint every tree in your vicinity with torches upon torches, create a moat, build back with stronger material, make elaborate traps, and so on, I just adds so much to the game, also being the only mob besides the endermen & wither (technically ender dragon too) who can permanently alter the terrain, making it the most common, and biggest threat to you and your builds.

Stfu no it doesn’t hahaha
A theory on Minecraft lore: when the zombie apocalypse struck, the ancient builders retreated to the ancient cities and tried to discover a new dimension (end city frames) but it was not a 2-way portal: the skulk grew out of it. The wardens natural grow out of the skulk, as a defense mechanisms of sorts. That would explain the name, the texture and their spawning location/animation. Plus, if they are made from skulk, it makes sense they cant see but rely on other senses. And before you start typing away telling me about the souls in the warden, what if the warden absorbs the souls of its victims, using soul energy to become more powerfull and then returning into the skulk? Skulk grows on death, so it absorbing souls is not unrealistic. Then the builders went in search of help at the endermen's strongholds and returned to the end. The endermen turned on them, noticing how they treated the piglins, so the builders forced them to find a fifth dimension to settle down in. But the dragon entered from the portal, killing all surviving builders and shattering the portal back to the overworld, making the endermen unable to rebuild society. If anyone tried to re-ignite the portal, the dragon killed them and destroyed it again. In time, the nether portals also broke, leaving any hope of civilization being restored a distant dream.

I have Asperger's, and for years I have been obsessed with creepers. I collect the merch, know everything about them, I dressed up as one for Halloween many times. But to be honest, it's really hard to say why I like them so much. I agree, the design is unique, but i think what people love about them is also the personality. They're destructive, yet the theory of them simply being extremely socially awkward, and blowing up because of that, is really heartwarming. There's something so adorable about a quiet, cactus shaped monster that is just too stressed to make friends.

I think one big thing that makes the creeper so iconic is that is so different from other things we see. Spiders, Skeletons, and zombies are the other super common overworld hostile mobs. But these don't get the same amount of attention because they are based on real life things and pop culture ideas. The creeper is something completely unique, unlike anything in any other game, movie or book. If the skeleton was the mascot, it wouldn't really have the same impact because skeletons are prominent in other areas of pop-culture.

I'm personally playing a hardcore Minecraft playthrough, and I take notes of everything that occurs to me in a lore-ish way, and its really fun putting strings together Like the Mobestiary, but not in mobs only but the whole adventure of a player It's basically that the person (me), wakes up after something that I don't remember, i first construct a base, and while doing so meet wandering traders and pillagers which encourages me to go out exploring for more life, eventually I discover village, and things just get crazier until I find a fossil, which eventually gives me my memories back, that someone was experimenting was soul sand inside a fortress and created mega withers (credit to wifies i really liked his throey) which wiped out my race (the ancient builders) and I stayed back at the stronghold and fought the undead so my other ppl can escape to the end, and was a person of significance to the civilization we had, i guess a leader of a certain region, or a really good warrior, so the god like beings of the credits chose to bring me back to bring closure to my race by killing the wither and the enderdragon, and on my journey to do so exploring all the structures, defeating a raid, building settlements, and expanding my notebook further and further, until i venture into end cities, finding out how the ender dragons were hunted by my race (yes i know its mat's theory but i also came with this conclusion on my own) Overall i think i have 5 books of maximized capacity, 100 (i play on java) pages, and i really suggest you guys to start a playthrough and do the same, but with ur own theories!
Creeper is the fine symbol of "it's not a bug, it's a feature", the basic of Minecraft gameplay.

Indeed, I have many fond memories of creepers. For example: the time I almost got blown up by fishing a Creeper up a cliff.

I do love the creeper it’s design was an accident but it appeals to me a lot.I know the creeper gets a lot of hate from people and I can understand it but deep down we all love the creeper
Theory: I was watching a minecraft theory recently and I realised that The ancient builders theorists conclude about the structures in minecraft must have built temples for a reason, the desert temples can't have been built for no reason and realising how civilisations in real life build temples an churches for gods and super beings I concluded that the ancient builders must have believed in someone or something. I first began to think about the creeper face on the cut sandstone but couldn't lead it to anything. I also began to think how a desert pyramid seems like a tomb (possibly from a prominent leader) but that could be a whole different theory. I was thinking back to super beings and remembered about the gods in the end credits. I propose the idea that the gods in the end credits were known about by the ancient builders and that they communed or even talked or that the gods may be ancient builders who survived the plague. If anyone wants to use this theory you can

Good theory, I think that the desert temple is a cult to the creepers. The creepers were considered gods and thats why they have tnt as a security measure. The creepers are in reality plants that make an explosion to spread their seeds. They want to kill you because when you die you become a very good source of fertilicer. Why they dont do the explosion thing on animals and zombis? I think its mostly a game mecanic.

Ah yes, the four legged green thing that walks and explodes... and hates cats for some reason.
The creeper almost feels like an out of place relic in modern Minecraft. Its bright and noisy textures are opposite to the smoother and more faded colors used today, and the entire way it functions as a mob has been all but steered away from by modern Mojang, but what might be most alien is that the creeper was even included at all. Common practice today is that an update is heavily planed, showcased, and anticipated a year before actually being released officially, but the Creeper was and is none of those things are the Creeper. The Creeper was an accident, made on a whim and dropped into the game without much thought, yet despite that has grown to be the most popular face of Minecraft. It makes one wonder if the Mojang of today is even capable of ever creating something similar.
I didn't know I was more important than I had realized...
