My first DLSR was the 12mp D5000. If you cropped more than a little bit, you could notice with a large enough print (for me, usually Super B size) but not by much. If anything, the sensor resolution wasn’t the big issue with the crop sensor Nikon DSLRs, it was always glass. Now that I’ve got all 24 megapixel cameras I crop a lot and can barely tell, maybe with an extreme birding photography shot, but most of the time cropping portraits and landscapes, I can’t even tell sometimes. Sometimes I think about buying a 45mp D850 DSLR as my “dream camera” but glass is just so important that it’ll probably never happen. I’ll probably end up with the last Nikon DSLR, the D780 😂 since I love the ‘look’ of the 700 series sensors.

Lumix should make new MFT rangefinder style compact cameras with that Real time lut feature. One in GX lineup with new tech and sensor but in gx80 size and dial layout and one in LX series with nd filter and maybe deactivatable IR filter for infrared photography without converting. Imagine how much fun these can be.

Nice one, George! I was eyeing some Olympus cameras for this size of camera and with tilting screen for street, like E-PL7, 8 or 9 (although I think 9 removed some things like ability to add an EVF, so probably 8 is the best). I really value the IBIS in these cameras, for them being so small. I cannot justify getting one right now (since I recently got an E-M5 III and much more recently, a PEN-F), but I will in the future if the opportunity comes!

Hey George,It's been a while since I visited your channel. There's no particular reason for my absence, but I wanted to let you know that your recent videos have impressed me greatly. Your storytelling, speaking style, and overall video presentation have improved significantly. I truly appreciate the quality and effort you put into these new videos.I especially appreciate that you are producing content about older cameras. As I get older, I find it less important to have the latest tech. For example, over the last two or three years, I have really enjoyed using the Panasonic GX800. It's so small I can take it everywhere, allowing me to capture pictures I wouldn't normally be able to with my Panasonic G9. I just wish the GX800 would get an update to include PDAF.I also owned the GX80 and GX9. However, after comparing the GX800 with the GX9, I found that it doesn't provide me any significant advantage in the field. Or better to say, the advantage of the smaller size outweighs the viewfinder for me.Thank you for creating such engaging content.

The 20/1.7 has great glass. Understandable if you delve deep into the exif and find the legend, "unknown Leica". I think it is slow to focus because it has a very fine focus thread, it will focus precisely. On a Panasonic it will disable the AFC and be AFS-only. This can be a drawback, and don't hope to do any kind of action shot. On an Olympus the 20/1.7 may hunt on C-AF. The more versatile PZ14-42 is very much the same size folded and also has excellent glass, but has no focus or zoom rings although it can MF on its toggle switches. The kit lens for the GX80/85 was the 12-32, originally for the GM1, a miniaturised lens with a slightly reduced image circle that can exhibit vignetting. In Japan the camera is the GX7 Mark II, it has Dual-IS which you will certainly notice if you give it a Power-OIS lens like the PZ14-42.

Thank you George for delving into this, and the piratical aspects of matching the system to application along with simple technical realities often you related, which are obscured by marketing hype are important take-aways you shared exceptionally well. That being the case, there are other technical elements that comprise effective resolution and image quality than sensor megapixels, those being Lens resolution, diffraction, diffusion, aberration and what is commonly referred to as 'micro contrast'. Sensors noise, dynamic range and the way the image processing engine and algorithms can also effect the overall fidelity of an image and how images are digitally developed in post and and displayed effect how an image is ultimately seen as much or more than the camera sensor size and resolution, and any element in that chain can make or break the presentation of an image. Over the 50+ years of messing about with dozens of cameras, lenses, filters, film, prints motion pictures in film and formats, when it comes to digital cameras I've observed that the optical performance of the lens ends up being the delineating element of an imaging system in terms of apparent resolution and fidelity. I've owned and shot sub 1", 1", 4/3", APS-C, H & full-frame 35mm, 645 and 2x2 and 6x9 medium format, and 4X5 cameras in film and digital. Over the last 10+ years I've used 4/3" sensor cameras for about 75% of images produced and the rest in crop and full-frame 35mm, a Pentax 645Z and Fuji GFX50s and a 1" and smaller cameras, and generally the larger sensor imaging systems produced superior actual and apparent image quality when used with optics designed to take advantage of the sensor. The biggest apparent difference I see between say a 20.3mp sensor M43 camera with a top quality Leica or Olympus Prime and a Sony 42mp sensor or Medium format camera with 50mp is not resolution but tonal quality, contrast. and quality. If exposed and processed optimally people's skin, hair, eyes are more natural, and defined as often are trees, grass, water, sky and cloud then what I often see from a M43 camera, especially in less than optimal lighting, and I believe that has to to with the higher inherent electronic noise levels in the M43 and smaller systems and how that noise is processed in-camera that degrades processed quality of the image as well, and generally the smaller sensor system will have a lower image signal to noise floor and ratio that degrades and/or limits the ultimate possible quality an image. While a low-contrast -low-detail scene may look the same with a modern 100mp Medium format system as a 10 year old pocket camera when viewed on a mobile device, a high-contrast, high-detail scene on a high-resolution, high-resolution display or print, the higher performance imaging system should and typically does surpass the low performance system. Large, gallery and commercial prints typically require a higher performance imaging system than Images shared on social media, but for how long? In a few years might newer display technologies such as VR and Mixed reality soon change that where we will be viewing immersive 100mp images through 20mp 3D glasses? And if such display become reality, will the 8mp image most in the future will care to view on such as display? I expect even in the future it will be the content of the image and how the image resonates with the viewer that will always matter as much or more than the technical capture of the image. An interesting image no matter the technical quality will always be engaging and as you point out, if we are serious about sharing meaningful to others in imagery, perhaps we should strive first and foremost to perceive what it is we see that is meaningful to us, and how to capture and share so it resonates and becomes meaningful to others. That perhaps the difference between the art of photographic imagery and the technical performance of a camera. Back in the 70's in high school, I had the good fortune to apprentice to a cinematographer on a film (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) that won as many awards as any film to date, and the technical quality of the the film was average at best for the time and very poor technically compared to what a $1,000 consumer camera can produce today, but it was how a moving story was captured in dramatic and moving ways that is timeless and engaging, and one of many examples to help us become visual artists Cheers! stay charged, moving, capturing, sharing and inspiring.

I love the way manufacturers come up with great UX ideas for shooting use cases. I feel a bit spoiled by the Ricoh GRIII currently. The Zone Focus priority mode is game changing. I kind of sit at 2.5m 90% of the time swapping between f4.5 and f6.3 if I want back to infinity in focus, then the camera takes care of the rest. I occasionally will roll the dial to focus at 3.5m or 5m also if it really is pretty far. This is something I'd love to see other brands tackle and put their own spin on. Especially as focus by wire is typically inprecise and the digital distance scale is rather unhelpful most of the time. I am curious about that that tilt EVF. I rarely use an EVF because I personally find eye level to usually be the most boring angle for a POV. So this could be something that changes my mind.

It is getting a lot of love now, but at the time seemed to sell badly (forever on sale), and I think it's good if people are aware of some of the limitations. I'm still discovering features inside it as I need them, even years later, so Lumix packed a lot in.

Good video and topic. I agree with you, we don't need a lot of pixels. I do think you missed some very important points. Not sure when you made this, but AI is in play now and more pixels are better. On the other side of that is that AI can do amazing up-sample and improve clarity. In general, I like to match the cameras resolution to the lenses resolution. i.g. Wide Zoom lenses cannot resolve more than about 25 megapixels, so it does no good to shoot a 48mp camera if you use a 24-70 2.8. A longer zoom can resolve a bit more. My 70-200 2.8 seems very sharp at 100mm f/8. I shoot 48MP on primes so I can crop and make AI selections. All this being said, I love the old 12MP CCD sesnor cameras. The CCD sensors are far superior in some ways to the CMOS. I discovered this when I was looking at my archive and went back to the early days when I shot CCD sensor cameras and WOW everything looked really nice.

Thank you for this video George. The GX85(80) is a winner. It is small, as well as the lenses. It is lightweight as well as the small primes. It is stupid cheap. Where as I like this body a lot I have voted with my wallet and prefer the GX9. Truth be told there aren’t a lot of differences between the two bodies. 16 vs 20MP isn’t significant. I don’t crop. Most of the improvements on the GX9 are incremental. This seems so silly but the reason I prefer the GX9 is the L monochrome D B&W jpeg. It is my favorite. Sorry Acros with red filter. This was introduced in the G9. Not mentioned is the GX85 has IBIS. A feature I adore. Being a LUMIX body, the GX85 has a lot of video features but lacks an audio jac. For a small body, the GX85 has an EVF. It is small but there. I don’t like the GRiii/x because it lacks this feature. Both the GX85/9 are becoming harder to find. The GX9 is becoming more expensive. It can be up to 2X the price of the GX85. That is crazy. The GX85 is way more than good enough. Technique tip George. I don’t like my screen to flip. I have some flippy screen bodies. If I use one of those bodies and want to take a shot from a low angle I flip the screen to the 90 degree angle to the body. This way the screen doesn’t stick out. I also get a twin lens reflex feel out of the camera a la Vivian Maier. I wish LUMIX would update the GX line. Maybe put the G9ii sensor in the S9 body. Weather seal it and add an audio jac. Wouldn’t that be something? If you don’t own a GX85(80) consider buying one. It is a super body as George suggests. Put the PL15 on this body and it is a super street photography combination. The same for the GX9. Now watch the prices go up. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
