Third-party 50mm f/1.8 lenses are EVERYWHERE, some more budget-friendly than others. However, some of the more "budget-friendly" 50mm street photography lenses are more expensive than first party lenses from Sony, Fujifilm or Canon - so, what's happening here? Can budget 50mm lenses be good long term street photography lenses? In this video we look at the 7artisans 50mm f/1.8 AF, the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 AF and some Viltrox lenses.

Can confirm. Aperture rings sells lenses

It is important to have an aperture ring, because the features checklist makes the sale. In actual use, however, the proper way to operate a Sony A7-series camera is to hold the camera out from the body in the right hand with the left hand in the jeans pocket. This prevents the use or accidental turning of the aperture ring.

I absolutely love my Viltrox 27 and 75 Pro lens for Fuji. I agree with the lens flaring, however only with a very strong light source - the Sun. When I use them outside I really rarely have sun on my photos so it's not an issue for me. The aperture ring is a huge win though. Having only 2 dials on the camera, I usually had those for aperture and shutter control. Having the aperture ring enables me to set one of those to ISO control. Before that I always had to push the ISO button on the camera and then use one of those dials. Now I don't have to press anything and just adjust the settings within a moment using two hands at once. Nevertheless, aperture control belongs to the lens. 🤭

I will never understand the complaint about focus noise or how long it takes to auto focus. Unless you're shooting sports, which you probably aren't with a 50mm.... Who cares about milliseconds of speed?

I LOVE 50mm lenses. I own four and yeah, I stay clear from new lenses. I'm happy with my 90s era 50mms. ^-^

I got several 50mm I got as package of ebay and etc, but my go to is 50mm1,8 FD. From 80s used it on Canon and now on Sony if I switch main body again(looking at nikon) first thing is fd adapter.

The Yongnuo 50mm lens does have a USB C port for firmware update, its next to the CE marking at the bottom of the lens

It depends on what camera and brand you use… I own a nikon zfc and I love to have the aperture ring on my viltrox lens cause I can use this camera like my Nikon FM, I also own a Fuji xe1 and same thing I use fully manual 7artisans lenses on it and shot it like a film camera… it make a real sense when you have a shutter dial on your camera, sorry Sony and canon users 😅

As a A7c (mk1) user (misses one dial), regular user of vintage lenses and somebody who uses also video-centric lenses I do prefer having an aperture ring. I never had the problem of accidentally changing the aperture and I do like it also for the fun of the process. It's definitely a plus in my eye and I would pay 10% more for this feature. However if I had to decide between IS and aperture ring, I would get the IS (weight depending ofc)

Oh man. I remember the hunt for the perfect inexpensive 50mm for my sony FF. It was a nightmare. In the end i ve bought just released samyang 50mm f1.4 mk.ii despite it's drawbacks. Compact, relatively weather sealed. Visually pleasing. I mean i would have been more satisfied if sony released 50mm f1.8 G instead of 2.5 but who would buy their 1.4 then 😁

Can't knock Samyang, I've found them to be a solid brand for Sony AF lenses!

The "flat even light" in Manchester all year has been really uninspiring all year. It's pushed me to buy 400iso film, but not to actually go out and shoot. I was really hoping we'd get some nice reflective snow, but it doesn't look as dull in your footage as I'd worried.

Great vid man! Have to admit I’m surprised about 7artisans! I guess that’s why most videos I’ve seen are about their manual focus lenses 😂 hopefully a software update fixes those issues down the line though. 🎉

Love your videos but… Yeah, these are cheap lenses made in tiny factories on a knife edge budget? They’re so much better than anyone should expect and enable people to start taking better photos. Also yeah. Aperture rings are really useful.

Are they made on such a small budget? As an example Viltrox have been around for years and produce much more than just lenses, sure they're okay but have many issues including AF and flaring. Most reviewers seem too ignore these problems because they are sent the lenses. The aperture rings are useful on manual focus lenses for me but on AF lenses feel redundant besides aesthetic appeal

@@GeorgeHolden I have the 24mm f1.8, the 35mm f1.8, and the 85mm f1.8. The 85mm I've had no issue with uncontrollable flaring, but on the wider angle side, the 24 and 35 both do get intense flaring when the sun is anywhere in the middle of the frame. Although when I place the sun in the top left or right it goes away.
