This week I'm in Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay with fellow photographer Roman Fox, and we're talking about the only thing us photographers really need to do to achieve an effective photo. It's not easy, but it's simple.

I like that he brings it up. You don’t have to have a specific chronotype to be a great photographer, you just have to learn to work with whatever conditions you are available for.
Love Roman's work-he's easily one of my favourite photographers.

Somebody knows where to find his work? Especially the pics shown at the beginning of the video?
Glanced over at my Fuji X10, “Excellent, halfway there.”
Roman is not only an amazing photographer but also a very gifted and unpretentious teacher of photography. Actually, I'd say it is something the two of you share, James, and I'm kind of surprised you haven't done a video together before. 😅😍

as much as i love Roman and enjoy his skill and content the one am excited for James to cross path with and cooperate would be the brilliant Sean tucker, specially since Tucker does feature talented photographers in his videos maybe we could see James appear in one of his 😍😍
Two of my favourite photographers in one video! Made my day. Thanks gents 👏

The one thing that all photographers need to do (apart from come back with all the kit they left with...)
I'm a painter but I get some good ideas on composition from photographers such as yourselves. I prefer a simple, calming composition with a lot of 'dead space' as mentioned in the vid, but 'chaotic' compositions can work too if they're composed with intention. If you can add a story element to that then that makes a painting even better.
Great to see a collaboration. I think there is room for both approaches .. as you’ve both proved. BTW Romans video on shooting in harsh light is brilliant with fab examples.
WHITBYYYY + RHB ❤❤❤❤❤
Your initial comment on photography's task / purpose is right in line with the 'official' definition of art I was taught way back when in university: "Art is a form of expression giving order to one's reactions to their environment". Excellent!
You two are my favorite photographers. And for the record James, you do pretty well yourself with street photography. Your incorporation of human and natural elements is something that I remember when I go out shooting.
Great to see my two favorite photography KZreadrs collab!
Lovin that "get closer to that wall advice"
ROMAN!!!!! my man
Finally a proper video that is not dominated by gear appraisal, but has some real photogrpahy content that at least I am intersted in. Still some Laica brown nosing, but not too bad. Keep turning the dial to photography content, please.
Love Roman’s channel and have loved the trend of seeing you work with other photographers lately! Keep up the good work and collaboration!
Roman is very good at finding scenes with very few bright colors, and then the focus is always one of the only few things with distinct color (or a color that just doesnt fit in with the surrounding or additional colors). And of course also the lighting and shadows.
Notification squad FTW! Been looking forward to another video. Thanks for not letting down!
Your photos are really lovely. The colour and contrast is just really pleasing
Your vidoes are so good recently I enjoy then soooooo much
The beginning of this video is proof that the cameraman always survives! :D
Glorious photography. I’ve been learning so much. Also… the dry humour 👩🏼🍳💋
I'm glad _someone_ could properly explain what I've been on about when it comes to preferring shooting in hard sunlight.
As a fellow fuji shooter, Roman is an inspiration.
I picked up a Q2 about half a year ago (via most of my annual bonus), with a lot of buyer's remorse after I clicked "confirm order". Now whenever I go out for a casual walk-about shoot, I don't even think twice: it's what I take with me, period, even though it's not something I can stick in a coat pocket or such. I'm not sure I can explain any technical reasons as to why it is, but I consistently enjoy the experience and the results I get for that type of use. 🤷♂
Now i know, i will immediately run and get a Fuji camera. Thx James and Roman, now I know what i did wrong all these years. Thx for sharing
Love both your work! Very cool to see two of my favorite photographers shooting together.
his street work is really outstanding and beautiful indeed. great shots
James, I've fond of watching your videos. There's lots to appreciate..........good tips, good humor, and (I know there was something else........)......good photos. But, I really, really, really appreciate that you do not have some trick-or-treat sound track competing with the sound of your voice...........so thanks for that. I don't really know why so many others have to have the noise on.......one db above the level of their voice. Maybe that's what happens when you nurse with noise.........and you just never get over it.
Got a kick out of noticing we've got the same shoes! Those white vivos are super comfy for long photo walks. Awesome seeing you and Roman do a video, two of my favs!
Big fan of Roman too. He doesn’t talk about gear too much… maybe that’s why I like him? 😂😂😂 I’m f’ing with you btw. Love your gear talk. Keep doing it pls. 👍🏻
Thanks for making this! Roman's work is wonderful.
Romans work is indeed fantastic, and he has some seriously good tutorials on his youtube channel.
Thank you!
Man... i really like your style with contrast, light & shadows.
Love this!!
I’ve been subscribed to your channel for quite a while but just discovered Roman’s videos recently. Glad to see you both. My two favorites!
these videos are incredible, I love your photography and I love seeing how different you do it to how I would do it.
Very cool seeing both of you in one video! Love you both!!
Zomg zomg zomg!!! Crossover vlog! I love you guys both!! 😍
loving the tudor! looks awesome!
The Q does have the leaf shutter, OIS and is corrected for Macro work. I get where the lens size comes from. Also the high MP count and big aperture, it’s easy to crop to 35 and 50mm photos while still having good DOF (f3’ish in equivalence at 50mm)
Jeez. The photos you chose for the video were mind-blowing. His tips were also great. Ps: you are one of the few channels I watch the whole video of, everytime. Nice guy to listen too, cool content, great photos. Kudos
Great images from both of you. I really dig those simple street photography images without a 1000 people around and a clear subject. I strive so simplify my photos.
Loved this one. Two of my fave photographers together. Some really good tips too!
I was in Whitby in July! Great spot. Got a couple shots of "Arguments Lane" which had a bunch of cute cats hanging out!
Outstanding video, James. Roman’s tips are excellent. 🦘👍
Great video. You two are my favourites.
Two legends together at last - I could watch you guys noodle around for HOURS!!!
most useful video in a while! Thanks! I really learned a lot today...
Love Roman's style and approach to photography. A big influence on my street photography style
I love this format of video!
Well James! This was pleasant! I think more of these conversations are quite insightful to photography and to your channel! Seems up your alley! Just don’t make it 1:30h like petapixel… no patience for that. But I really happy with this tone you took in this video!
Great video - nice touch with you two. But - how did you arrange Robin Hood’s Bay to be empty? No people??? Unreal 😱✅👍
Good video, thanks for posting. 👍
Amazing tips here Deffo going to try them and love his work
I'd not come across Roman before, loved his images and explanations. So he can thank you for an extra follow 😊
I loooove his photography wow. I definitely wanna learn how to get pics like that!
Hi James, Great content with you and Roman on this video. Thanks Roman for sharing your lighting and shading tips. Can't wait to try them out and see whether I will get some nicer photos. 😌
Got rid of the Q2 and one of the big reasons was the bulky size. Definitely not compact or comparable to an M with a sunmicron. It’s massive!
Thank you
Yorkshire is an exotic location!
So close! Almost had a video with no talk of gear 😝 😂 I enjoyed the chat with Roman though, gonna try those tips and tricks.
Excellent content as usual James.
Great video!
8:12 is when James get's put on a watch list
Great video of two of my favourite photographers. I really liked this content with inspiring ideas and good advise to improve with my own pictures.
Good collab. Roman and you doing good work
Great vid together! i really like Roman's work and allready was subbed to him as well.
2 of my favs in 1 vid.... 👌🏼
Great vid!
Great looking watch you goth there
An awesome combination of photographers
Ayeeee! Two of my faves 👌🏾
From Japan, Whitby sounds positively exotic.
That Venice photo!!!! ❤🔥🔥🔥
With the Leica Q, cropping is just the way to "simulate" longer focal lengths (the camera supports that very well and stores the crop in the DNG, but you can change your crop in post - something you can't do when using a longer lens). This was a bit silly with the Q (not enough resolution), much more viable with the Q2 (more resolution) - and is finally very usable with the Q3 and its high megapixel count. I have a friend who uses a 35 mm lens on his Sony A7RIII most of the time and crops afterwards - same MO as with a Q2 (or Q3). Always having a high quality lens on your camera and not to worry about changing lenses is the main appeal. (I would love to have a Q3, but my bank account is adamantly against it.)
Glad to see that you enjoyed my home stomping grounds. Nice work as usual. You should try Holy Island in Northumberland...it's got your name written all over it!
harsh light and shadow to tell stories we put together, nice
Cool video, James! Roman has a great eye.
Thanks for the LOL moment ("that's different from wanting it to ...)
Nice tips from Roman. Hand my name down for Q3 since launch weekend and had to wait to this week to get it, I’ve offloaded my Q2 and Sony gear, suits my style of shooting.
Really nice video 😊👌
That shot at 8:23 is so good.
good stuff
Great video , you two should get together again. Love the work that you both produce.
This is the collab I was waiting for since I saw you two followed each other on Instagram! 😂
I agree with your thoughts on the Leica Q cameras.
Nice pictures from you also in this episode
The Q2 is completely weather sealed - that's why the lens does not come off, as Leica decided that the sealed guarantee they offer on the camera (and the Q3) could only be fulfilled by making it a fixed lens camera.
James I ordered your three book bundle last weekend...
I knew it! Gotta get that Fujifilm camera!
Thanks for this video! As I just jumped on the Fuji train - I can rest assured knowing all my photos will turn out perfectly 😂
Nice Yorkshire scenery
A simple, very effective message from two great photographers. As you always say James, take a photo 'of' something. I'm watching this video on holiday in the west of Ireland so just had to take a photo of some sheep in your honour 😂
One of my dream pair of photgraphers i would like to spend a day with
I think you’re right re Q being to similar to the M. Lots of angry Leica M shooters if suddenly you had a Q line that is cheaper and better (autofocus etc). Though I would really love that!
Doesn't _that_ look like a lovely place to take photos!
I'm pretty much sure, it is a sign: Your Sony belongs in the sea. Addendum: Maybe look for renting a Leica SL oder Leica TL?
Stumbled on your content this morning! Any chance you know what the name of this tripod is? Thanks!
