Street photography cameras are out of control, if every camera can be a street camera then what makes one camera better suited than another? The label "street camera" is useful for referring to the tool, but the tool can come in any shape or form. So, deciding on the right camera for you requires more than just a simple KZread recommendation. We must assess our specific use case and our personal preferences, what makes a camera better for one photographer might not make it the best camera for street photography for another person.

    After years of being beat over the head with "full frame is the best" from various KZreadrs and photography websites, I caved and bought a used FF camera. It was a total mistake. Getting really shallow DOF was fun, but the camera was huge and heavy, as were the lenses. The IQ was incredible, but so was the IQ on my APSC camera and m43 camera when I tried that. Having bought and sold a stupid amount of stuff, I'm pretty much back where I started, which is both delightful and frustrating, since I caused myself so much trouble trying to find the Goldilocks system for me. To each their own, but having something small and light that is nice to use is more important to me than image quality. If only it didn't take so much experimentation for that to sink in... Great video!

    there are photographers i follow who use 35mm lenses and i love their work. but when i finally got my hands on an equivalent (23mm fujifilm) i only loved it until it wasn't new anymore. i found myself gravitating more towards my 50mm and 28mm equivalent lenses (18mm, 35mm) more and even use those focal lengths when using a zoom. turns out that while i love when others use that focal length, i don't like using it myself.

    I got a Lumix G6 recently. It's a great 16mp mirrorless M43 camera, but it has no IBIS, the color grading isn't great, and low light performance is mediocre because of poor denoising algorithms. But it was shaped so well. At some point my sister kept taking it, so I decided, considering I paid like 190 euro with a lens, to give it to her, and I got an Olympus EM5. That camera objectively gives me much better shots and is overall just a more technically robust camera, video aside. But the flip out screen of the G6, the lightness of it, the general grip and everything makes me think about how much more enjoyable it was to use. It's something I'm willing to trade out for IBIS but absolutely made me appreciate a lot more than the sensor.

    I bought a Canon DSLR in the first instance after my Panasonic bridge camera fell to pieces. I think it made amazing pictures but after acquiring a couple of lenses and being given a used full frame version, it was just too heavy for me. I loved shooting with it but hated carrying it. I then picked up a secondhand X100S to see if I'd prefer it. I did. I sold my Canon gear for a profit and bought into the Fuji system, in the end I opted for interchangeable lenses (though I love the X100 series - I travel a lot, and wanted to be able to throw some zooms on my camera) and that's where I've been for the last half a decade. But, I do have a pair of Ricohs now (the GRiii and GRiiix) because I have recently got a job (for the first time in 20 years) and now have to carry a bunch of stuff with me to the office each day and my Fuji bag is just a bit awkward on top. Pretty much any camera will do in 2024. And while my preferred day-to-day focal length is a 35mm equivalent, I don't mind shooting with something wider or narrower...

    I do find it a little odd how so many well known street photographers use a full frame camera, but recommend traveling as light as possible for aspiring street photographers. But they often don't recommend an APSC camera. But using an APSC camera would help since they are smaller, lighter and usually less expensive. Then again, there's not that many lens specifically designed for those cameras.

    I picked up photography as a hobby and I've always been far more of a technical person than an artistic one, so I know what specs are useful, or sometimes downright necessary for me, and no gear video would influence me away from what I want. I see a couple top comments talk about how they got influenced to get a full frame camera and it became too heavy when factoring in the lenses that came with them. I had almost the opposite experience but it might be because I did the switch at a good time, because I jumped on the Canon RP when it came out and it's lighter than the DSLR I used to have. I think Sony also makes pretty compact full frame mirrorless cameras, I can't imagine their lenses are too heavy, but for me, I can still use my old lenses, though I've had a very light and somewhat compact 16mm f2.8 stuck on it since it fits in small spaces although it's not exactly pocketable, though maybe with that 28mm f2.8 pancake lens that came out a bit ago it might fit in more pockets and still be fairly light.

    Of course technically *any* camera can be used for street photography. Now the question is, what flavour/theme of street photography do you like? What's your approach? Because in the end not all cameras fit all kind of situations. People-oriented folks may prefer something discreet like mirrorless APSC/M43 with wide angle lens because it allows them to get closer to subjects easily. Less gear also means more mobility. Other folks may be interested in general environment, or architecture. They like to spend more time framing carefully. Bigger camera (on a tripod) usually isn't a big deal.

    I went out four years ago to buy a Z6: I went to the store, took one in my hand and thought NO. I tried an A7Mk something ad it was NO WAY!!! I tried a Canon EOS R and it was Meh! When I tried an EOS RP it was "Just right" to me, despite all the bad press and my big hands. I'm still using that camera and I feel the same connection today as when I picked it up for the first time at the store. It never was a technical marvel, but it takes gorgeous photos that I really like and I barely have to edit. I also bought a Fuji X100V the day it came out, on preorder. I HATED that camera for every single aspect of it, despite trying HARD to love it. Two year later I sold it, out of shear disgust and I never regretted getting rid of that crap. (thanks god I made more then what I bought it for! ) Don't trust the reviewers! ... EVER! The vast majority promote instead of dissecting products

    nah dude, youre generalizing and proving your own point within this video. I 100 percent notice the hp and torque of a car. Granted my first career was a mechanic. But that means I have a technical mind, and for me a huge part of the hobby, is the gear and the specs. I love that stuff, I love the tools, I love the different things they excel at, and I love finding the best tool for the job. For some people photography is 100% creativity and emotion, and they dont need to care about specs as long as the camera performs what they need. But for others like myself, its half the hobby. Can I drive a honda accord on a racetrack for the "experience" sure, but Id much rather drive a race car as every gear change, tight turn, and screaming exhaust adds to the experience for me.

  • @GeorgeHolden

    @GeorgeHolden

    Surely that means you agree based on what you've said? It's subjective to each person what they look for and prioritize. Whether you take a photo on a 42MP camera or on a 12MP camera, you don't notice those things in the moment or of the image as a whole - that's the same for me when driving a car, I don't notice the CC of an engine but I'm not a mechanic

  • @gobgobcachoo
    @gobgobcachoo4 ай бұрын

    It's funny. I've been a photographer assistant for a few editorial photographers. Equipment and attitudes to gear Is all over the place. Some don't talk about specs, others obsess over them. It's tools and they could make good work with anything. But their final choices on their equipment is not lackadaisical, but built from years of personal experience. Gear does matter, but not in the way you think.

    Yep. Like clothing, one must try the camera in hand to see how it fits YOU. Otherwise, the technology of modern cameras (like cars) is more than adequate for 98% of consumers. So buy one that fits comfortably to hand and the controls are easy to operate. I have small hands, am a senior, and like to travel and go on hikes. The size, weight and quality of the micro four thirds systems is perfect for my needs, so my Canon DSLRs now sit on the shelf. YMMV

    Hey George, got a bit of a longer question for you re: MFT cameras. I've been shooting with Pentax D/SLRs almost my entire photographic "career," and something I've gotten really used to was the certainty of when a photo is taken. I know with absolute certainty that when I can see through the viewfinder again, the photo is done and I can move and re-adjust. I've used both point and shoots and a Sony NEX-something, and this has been a huge problem. I took a PS to my radiation appointment (yay brain cancer) to grab photos of my hospital's vintage RT equipment exhibit and they're all blurry because I moved too early. It's not just shutter lag, it's not knowing *when* within the shutter lag the photo is being taken. I barely even take photos with my K-7 screen because it has the same issue, the viewfinder is an absolute requirement. Maybe there's a term for this but I can't find it. What's your experience with EVF MFT cameras and this phenomenon? Is the difference between photo taking and saving certain enough that you can move for your next photo while it's being saved? Bonus points I can see through the EVF/screen again while saving, even if I can't take another photo just yet. I really want to switch to MFT because of the smaller size and weight, but this is the make-or-break thing for me.

    I have GAS and need a 12 step group. The solution for me has been retirement. No more discretionary income. Now I watch the video, feel the waves Gas, then let the waves resolve. Lack of discretionary income has allowed me to not add any gear to my collection. The two criteria I have for a camera are 1) the body must be small 2) it must be lightweight. Bonus criteria: the body must have a crop sensor. I am drawn to the 35,50,85mm focal lengths. A fast f stop isn’t required. Like Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz”, I already have what I need and want. They aren’t the same. I need to use what I have already. I wish if I purchased a Leica my images would look like Henri Cartier-Breslin or Alan Schaller. It doesn’t work that way. Any camera and lens will do the job if I do the work. Rather than spend money on gear I’m purchasing books and classes. Right now I’m studying the French Impressionists. I didn’t realize they were doing street photography with a brush & paint pallet. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
